Overview

Sent to Carthak as part of the Tortallan peace delegation, Daine finds herself in the middle of a sticky political situation. She doesn't like the Carthaki practice of keeping slaves, but it's not her place to say anything — she's just there to heal the emperor's birds. It's extremely frustrating! What's more, her power has grown in a mysterious way.

As the peace talks stall, Daine puzzles over Carthak's two-faced Emperor Ozorne. How can he be so caring with his birds and so cruel to his people? Daine is sure he's planning something. Daine must fight the powerful Emperor Mage, knowing that the safety and peace of the realm depend on stopping Ozorne's power-hungry schemes.

When she is sent as part of the delegation from Tortall to negotiate a peace treaty with Carthak, fifteen-year-old Daine must use her powers to communicate with animals for more than healing the Carthak emperor's dying birds.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Book III of Tamora Pierce's reissued "The Immortals" quartet finds the young heroine Daine part of a diplomatic mission to the enemy realm of Carthak. Now an attractive and mostly ladylike fifteen, she has been included among the luminaries because of her wild magic gift-the ability to commune with and sometimes take on the shape of animals (all par with Pierce's fantasies.) It seems the Emperor Orzone has an entire aviary filled with sick birds. But wait-first Daine impetuously leaps from the royal barge to save a tiny monkey from drowning. With Zek now added to her personal menagerie of animal sidekicks (which includes the dragon, Kitten) it's on to the palace. Here the plot stalls amidst courtly intrigues until Daine finally gets to prove her prowess and save the day in a denouement that has her unseating the nasty emperor in favor of his nicer nephew. Along the way she also manages to completely destroy the opulent palace with the aid of a museum full of resuscitated dinosaurs (don't ask.) Book I is still the best. 2003 (orig. 1995), Atheneum, Ages 12 up.

School Library Journal
Gr 6–10—Tamora Pierce's third title (Atheneum, 2003) in the series continues the riveting story of Daine, a Tortallan girl with wild magic—the ability to communicate with animals and shape-shift into their form. This power earns her a mentorship from Numair Salmalin, a mage, and a fast friendship with Alanna the Lioness, the King's Champion (and the main character from Pierce's Song of the Lioness Quartet). As a developing mage and healer, Daine is invited to Carthak to meet with Emperor Ozorne, also known as the Emperor Mage. Unfortunately, he has angered the gods, especially Carthak's own Graveyard Hag, and Daine is tapped as a vessel for the goddess, quickly managing to become embroiled in the battle between Emperor and gods. Given a "gift" by the goddess, Daine is able to raise creatures from the dead. When Ozorne threatens Numair, Daine becomes so angry that she raises an army of dinosaur skeletons that destroys the Emperor's palace. In the aftermath, Ozorne escapes and Daine discovers that Numair is still alive. This full-cast production is narrated by the author. They all do a wonderful job, especially Carmen Viviano-Crafts, who voices Daine, and Mike Komurek as Daine's new friend, Zek the Marmoset. All the drama, humor, anger, and romance come across clearly. While the audiobook could stand on its own, it is recommended for libraries circulating the previous volumes.—Jessica Miller, New Britain Public Library, CT
Sally Estes
Following "Wild Magic" (1992) and "Wolf-Speaker" (1994), this third entry in the Immortals series again centers on the adventures of Daine, now 15. Because of her wild magic, which gives her a strong affinity with animals and the ability to heal them, Daine is part of a delegation sent to work out a peace treaty with a barbarous emperor whose beloved captive birds are deathly ill. Pierce continues to build on the universe she created for the Song of the Lioness series about Alanna, who's a secondary character here, and as Daine grows in her powers so does the power of the narrative. Daine's ability to communicate with animals and to shape shift into animal form is comparable with that of characters in Andre Norton's renown tales involving human-animal communication. Daine's companion, the irrepressible, incurably curious young dragon, Kitten, is appealing as a character, as is the resourceful marmoset, Zek, whom Daine rescues and takes under her wing. The climactic scenes in which Daine brings to life the bones of the long-dead dinosaurs and fellow creatures in the great natural history hall and leads them in the destruction of the castle and downfall of the emperor are truly riveting. This impressive entry in Pierce's saga will leave fans clamoring for more.

Reviewed by Candace Cunard for TeensReadToo.com

EMPEROR MAGE follows the story of Daine, now fifteen years old, a girl with the rare power of "wild magic" that gives her an extraordinary affinity with animals. With her wild magic, Daine can communicate with animals, see the world through their senses, and even transform herself into one, all skills that the first two books of THE IMMORTALS series have shown her develop.

In this third book, the stakes are raised as Daine accompanies an ambassadorial delegation to Carthak, where she is to use her wild magic to cure the Carthaki Emperor's sick pet birds as a show of goodwill. Carthaki ships have been attacking the coast of Daine's country of Tortall for the last year, resulting in increasingly violent skirmishes, and the intention of this delegation is to negotiate for peace between the nations.

Accompanying Daine on this trip are the famous lady knight Alanna, star of Pierce's LIONESS QUARTET, Tortall's most powerful mage and Daine's teacher, Numair, and the young dragon, Kitten.

Daine finds Carthak to be an alternately strange and disturbing place; she's not comfortable with the practice of slavery, which is legal there, or with Emperor Orzone, a powerful mage in his own right. When the peace negotiations stall, things start to heat up, and the balance of power between two great nations has been staked on the outcome.

In what is undoubtedly my favorite book of the quartet, Pierce continues to develop Daine's skills and abilities while simultaneously allowing the readers entry into the struggles that this wild mage has had to face in order to build her talent. The cast of supporting characters is large but nuanced, and although it might initially seem an easy job to discern between the two sides of the impending fight, the distinctions are increasingly and intelligently blurred.

I particularly enjoyed the further characterization of Numair, as well as the introduction of the young Prince Kaddar, who always kept me guessing. The pacing is spot on, with seemingly innocuous events leading up to a powerful climactic sequence.

I read it all the way through without stopping!

    One of My Favorite Books

I'm seventeen now, (but don't worry I read this book the first time in the third or fourth grade) and I can't remember the amount of times I've read this book. I have read three of the Song of the Lioness series, and all of The Immortals Quartet and this book in particular is my favorite! The culture and characters are highly developed (and amusing) as are the relationships, diplomacy, and the highest amount of realism that fantasy achieves. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone - no page is wasted, the pacing is masterfully done, and the conclusion to this story in particular is more than satisfying, as is the book, no matter what your age.

The Emperor Mage - part of a series by Tamora Pierce

This was the fourth book in the series - I can't recall what it's called at present - but the entire series was great. The main character has a gift of wild magic and she can talk to the animals. In fact, she's discovered that the animals she's spoken to have changed some - have learned to be sneaky and avoid traps that hunters put up for them. At this stage in the game, there is a war coming and only she and her beasts can help to shore up the defenses and remove the bad influences, leaving only the good citizens to stay in her country and fight against an evil emperor mage. She is stirring and her story is exciting and I have to admit that I just love this fantasy and magic - set back when everyone rode horses or ponies and there were no phones nor internet nor satellites to track other countries' actions. Enjoy!

    A reviewer

I Personally adored this installment of The Immortals Quartet and ask Ally, with the highest possible respect for her personal opinion, why she felt it was appropriate to verbally criticize the author as being uncapable for writing a book that wasn't to her personal taste. This book is thought provoking, but not overwhelming and the story flows well and can easily amuse its reader for hours. The characters are easy to connect with and create a well crafted plot and a beautiful story.I have read this book many times and look forward to Tamora Pierces next book's'.

    Emperor Mage is magical.

Emperor Mage is the third book of The Immortals series. Tamora Pierce wrote the book Emperor Mage to end the adventures of Daine and Numair. Daine has wild magic and she can talk to animals. Daine and Numair have been fighting Kadurangs and other immortals. Daine gets disturbing news of some new immortals that none is able to identify. These immortals kill anything they come in contact with. Daine also find her mother and father (She never knew her father because he was a god and her mom died before she could tell Daine about her father.) in the Realm of the Gods when the immortals almost killed her and Numair. When Daine comes to death Numair freaks and kills her attackers. It¿s then that Daine and Numair realize that they have feelings for each other but will they admit it? You'll just have to read to find out. This book will definitely keep your attention. You won't be able to get enough of it.

    THE BEST BOOK EVER!!

When I read this book, I was expecting to see Carthak fall, and see Daine become her most powerful. Instead, Carthak has to deal with new management, so to speak. If you LOVE fantasy and magica and dragons, this book is an amazing story that tells of a teenage girl who has to stop two mighty territories from going to war.

vaguely unrelated yet still my favorite

Emperor Mage is my favorite of the 'Wild Magic' series though vaguely unrelated to the other three books it provides a very interesting story line because of the separation. The book explains Daine's Wild Magic more indepth than just healing as she also 'gains' the Graveyard's Hag's gift of magic (though only temorarily).

    amazing!

I loved this book. It was overall well-written and I got to love the characters (especially Numair.) Even though I read The Protector of the Small quartet, and the Trickster's Choice and the Trickster's Queen before I read Emperor Mage, when Kaddar told Daine that Numair 'died' I caught my breath and couldn't breathe for a couple seconds and all I could think was 'No, no, no, no, that can't happen!' even as another part of me cried that Numair had been alive and happy in the Protector of the Small and the Trickster books. I also liked the way in which Daine 'Lost her temper'. An amazing book and one everyone who likes fantasy-type books should read.
