Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Now that my work on The Immortals series is done, I'm often asked which of the six proved the most challenging to write, and the answer is: all of them—though each in their own unique way.

When I started writing Evermore, I was so focused on telling that particular story that I didn't see it as the start of a series. I was just doing what I always did—attempting to make sense of my own life experiences under the guise of fiction. Ever's grief over losing her family was directly channeled from my own grief over losing my loved ones, and as I began to find my way out of the darkness, Ever did too. It wasn't until I'd reached the end of the story that I realized it was really just the beginning, she had a much bigger journey ahead of her, there was so much more still to tell.

In book two, Blue Moon, Ever faces a heart-wrenching decision between the past and the present, and to be honest, I wasn't entirely sure which path she'd choose until I stood on the precipice right alongside her. It was also around that point that I realized the true scope of her journey—the sacrifices she'd be required to make—and exactly how the series would end.

Shadowland, the third book, provides a major turning point for the series. Not only are the stakes raised to a whole new level, but events that seem simple on the surface—the arrival of Jude, the flip-side of immortality, the Shadowland itself—ultimately bear powerful repercussions that'll reverberate in later books.

With Dark Flame I made a conscious effort to take Ever's journey in a much . . . well, darker direction. It's her struggle with the dark side of herself that allows her to locate the light in the person she once considered her enemy. It's a powerful moment for Ever—one that redefines everything she once thought she knew about herself.

A lot happens in the penultimate book in the series, Night Star—relationships change, serious decisions are made, and everything is put into motion for the grand finale to come. While getting all those pieces lined up sometimes felt like a very tricky game of chess, at its heart, Night Star is a story of friendships—or, more accurately, the fragile nature of friendships. How they can shift and change into something wholly unrecognizable—and how their dissolution can be just as devastating as any romantic break-up.

As for Everlasting . . . well in an effort to avoid spoilers, there's not a lot I can say except that it was a very bittersweet moment when I typed “The End.” I'd lived with these characters for the last few years, and probably spent more time talking to them than I did my own husband. They became almost real to me—like imaginary playmates—and I have to admit that saying good-bye was no easy task. Even now, as I continue my work on the spin-off Riley Bloom series, as well as my upcoming YA series, Soul Seekers, I occasionally find myself thinking about Ever and Damen, and Miles and Haven, and Ava and the twins, and Roman and yes, even Drina—wondering where they are, what they're doing, and if they're happy with the ending I gave them. Mostly, I hope that they're happy.

Read an Excerpt

"Ever–wait!"

Damen reaches toward me, grasping my shoulder, hoping to slow me, to bring me back to him, but I keep moving forward, can't afford the delay. Not when we're so close, almost there.

The worry streaming off him like rain from a windshield, not dimming in the least when he picks up the pace, matches my stride, and laces his fingers with mine.

"We should head back. This can't be the place. Nothing about it looks remotely the same." His gaze travels the distance from the disturbing landscape to my face.

"You're right. Nothing about it is remotely the same." I hover at the perimeter, my breath coming too quick, my heart beginning to race. Taking a moment to survey my surroundings before I hazard a step forward again. One small stride followed by another, until my feet sink so deep into the mud-laden earth, the tops of them vanish completely. "I knew it," I whisper, the words barely audible, though I don't need to speak for Damen to hear me, it's just as easy to communicate telepathically. "It's exactly like the dream. It's..."

He looks at me. Waiting.

"Well, it's just as I expected." I glance to the side, my blue eyes meeting his dark ones, holding the look, wanting him to see what I see. "All of this, everything you see here, it's like... it's like it's all changed because of me."

He kneels beside me, fingers splayed on my back, running his palm in slow circles up and down the path of my spine. Wanting to soothe, to refute everything I just said, but choosing to swallow the words instead. No matter what he says–no matter how good and solid an argument he may wage–he knows better. Knows all too well that I will not be swayed.

I heard the old woman. He heard her too. Saw the way her finger pointed, the way her eyes stared accusingly–listened to the haunting tune of her creepy song with its cryptic lyrics and lingering melody.

The warning intended solely for me.

And now this.

I sigh as I gaze upon it–Haven's grave–so to speak. The spot where just a few weeks before I dug deep into the earth to bury her belongings–all that was left of her–the clothes she wore when I sent her soul into the Shadowland. A spot I held sacred, hallowed–now transmuted, transformed. The once rich earth turned to a wet, soggy mush with no sign of the flowers I'd manifested, no life of any kind. The air no longer shimmering, no longer glistening, virtually indistinguishable from the dark part of Summerland I'd stumbled upon earlier. So bleak, so foreboding in both its feel and appearance, Damen and I are the only creatures willing to venture anywhere near it.

The birds keeping to the perimeter–the carpet of nearby grass shrinking back on itself–providing all the evidence I need to know it's changed because of me.

Like fertilizer sprinkled onto a small patch of weeds–each immortal soul I've sent to the Shadowland has tainted and infected the Summerland. Creating its opposite, its shadow-self–an unwelcome yin to Summerland's yang. A place so dark, so dreary, and so contrary, magick and manifesting cannot exist.

"I don't like this." Damen's voice is edgy, as his eyes dart, eager to leave.

And while I don't like it either, while I'm just as ready to turn around and never look back, it's not quite as simple as that.

It's only been a few days since my last visit, and despite knowing that I did what I had to, that I was left with no choice but to kill Haven, my former best friend, I can't seem to keep myself from returning, from asking forgiveness–forgiveness for my actions as well as hers. And that short amount of time is all it took to go from light to dark–to grow murky, muddy, and barren–which means it's up to me to do something to stop it from spreading even further.

From getting any worse.

"What exactly did you see in the dream?" Damen's voice softens as his eyes pore over me.

I take a deep breath and sink my heels deeper, the pockets of my old worn jeans dipping into the mud, but not really caring. I can manifest a clean, new pair just as soon as we're out of here. My clothes are the least of my concerns in the face of all this.

"It's not a new dream." I turn and meet his gaze, seeing the flash of surprise that crosses his face. "I've had it before. A long time ago. Just before you decided to leave me on my own, so I could decide between you and Jude." He swallows hard, flinches ever so slightly at the unpleasant memory, which makes me feel bad, it wasn't the point I was trying to make. "Back then, I was sure Riley had sent it. I mean, she appeared in it, and she seemed so vibrant and... alive." I shake my head. "And, well, maybe it was her, maybe it was just wishful thinking, a result of my missing her. But, just after she'd gotten my attention, I realized it was you she wanted me to see. You were the point of the dream."

His eyes widen. "And..." he prompts, jaw tightening, poised for the worst.

"And... it's like you were trapped in this tall, glass, rectangular prison, and you were fighting like hell to escape. But no mater how hard you fought, you couldn't break free. Even though I tried to help, tried to get your attention so we could work together, it's like... like you couldn't see me. I was right there on the other side, with only the glass between us, and yet, I may as well have been invisible to you–you had no sense of my presence. Couldn't see what was right there in front of you..."

He nods. Nods in a way that tells me his logical side, the side that likes tidy explanations and easy solutions, is raring to take over. "Classic dreamscape scenario," he says, brow slanted with relief. "Seriously. Sounds to me like you think I'm not paying you enough attention–that I don't really listen–or maybe even–"

But before he can go any further, I cut it right there. "Trust me, it wasn't the kind of dream that can be found in some Dream Interpretation One-oh-one book. In tonight's dream, just like the dream I had before, when you realized you couldn't fight it, when you realized you were trapped forever, well, you gave up. You just dropped your fists, closed your eyes, and slipped away. Slipped into the Shadowland."

He swallows hard, tries to take it in stride, but it's no use. He's clearly as shaken as I was when I dreamed it.

"And then, just after that, everything disappeared. And by everything I mean you, the glass prison, the stage–all of it. The only thing left was this gloomy, damp patch of earth, a lot like the one we're in now." I rub my lips together, seeing the scene so clearly in my head it's as though I'm immersed in it. "But that last part was new. I mean, it wasn't in the original dream. Still, the second I woke I knew that not only were the two dreams connected, but that they were connected to this place as well. I knew I had to come here. Had to see for myself. See if I was right. I'm just sorry I dragged you along for the ride."

My eyes graze over him, taking in his bed-ruffled hair, the soft, wrinkled T-shirt, the worn-in jeans–clothes gathered in a hurry, in haste, just seconds before I manifested the golden veil of light that led us both here. Feeling his strong, capable arms sliding around me, the warmth of them reminding me of just a few hours earlier when we slid between the sheets, tucked our bodies tightly together, and settled in for the night.

Back when our only immediate concern was that of Sabine and how she would handle the second week in a row that I'd failed to go home.

How she'd handle the fact that I took her at her word when she warned me not to come back until I sought the kind of help she's convinced that I need.

And while I've no doubt I need help, especially in light of all that's before me, unfortunately it's not the kind of help Sabine meant. It's not the kind of help that can be found in a prescription, a psychiatrist's couch, or even the latest self-help book.

It requires something much greater than that.

We linger, the two of us gazing upon Haven's grave. Damen's thoughts carefully melding with mine, reminding me that no matter the consequences, no matter what lies ahead, he's there for me. I had no choice but to do what I did.

By killing Haven, I saved Miles. Saved myself. She couldn't handle the power, pushed every last limit. My making her immortal brought out a whole new side of her–one that we didn't expect.

But that's where Damen and I differ. I'm more inclined to believe what Miles said just shortly after I'd spared him from her. That there was nothing new or surprising about Haven's dark side, it'd always been there, she exhibited signs all along. But, as her friends, we fought to ignore it–chose to look past it, to see only the light. And when I looked into her eyes that night, saw the way they gleamed with victory when she tossed Roman's shirt–my last remaining hope of getting the antidote that will allow Damen and me to be together–into the flames, well, there was no doubt in my mind that her dark side had completely extinguished the better part of her.

And as far as Drina's death is concerned, well, it was either kill or be killed. It's as simple as that. Roman's the unfortunate one–but still an accident pure and simple. A misunderstanding of the most tragic kind, I'm sure of that now. I know in my heart that Jude's disastrous interference was an act he committed solely in my best interest. His intentions were good.

I saw it unfold in his head.

We rise to our feet, slowly, solemnly, all too aware that the answers we seek won't be found here, that our best bet is to start at the Great Halls of Learning and see where that leads. And we're just about to go there, when we hear it. The tune that causes us to freeze:

From the mud it shall rise

Lifting upward toward vast dreamy skies

Just as you–you–you shall rise too...

Damen grasps my hand tighter, pulls me closer, as we turn to face her together. Taking in the long wisps of hair that, having escaped the confines of the braid that trails down her back, float freely around her crumpled, ancient face, making for an eerie silvery halo effect, while her rheumy, cataract-clumped eyes settle on mine.

From the deep and dark depths

It struggles toward the light

Desiring only one thing

The truth!

The truth of its being

But will you let it?

Will you let it rise and blossom and grow?

Or will you damn it to the depths?

Will you banish its worn and weary soul?

She repeats the tune, emphasizing the end of each verse. Her voice rising as she sings, "Rise–skies–too–depths–light–thing–truth–being–it–grow–depth–soul–soul–soul–" repeating the last part again and again, her eyes moving over me, analyzing, observing, even though they appear to be sightless, as her gnarled, bumpy old hands lift before her–cupping, rising–her fingers slowly unfolding as a spray of ash spews forth from her palms.

Damen's grip tightens, flashing her a harsh meaningful glare as he warns, "Stay back." Maneuvering in front of me, when he adds, "Stop right there. Don't come any closer." His voice level, sure, containing an underlying threat that's impossible to miss.

But if she heard, she pays him no notice. Her feet keep moving, shuffling forward, while her eyes keep staring and her lips continue to utter the tune. Stopping just shy of us, poised right at the very edge of the perimeter–the place where the grass ends and the mud begins–her voice suddenly changing, lowering, when she says, "We've been waiting for you." She bows low before me, bending with a surprising amount of agility and grace for someone so aged, so... antiquated.

"So you've said," I reply, much to Damen's dismay.

Don't engage her! he mentally warns. Just follow my lead. I'll get us out of here.

Words I'm sure she overheard when her gaze switches to him. The sun-bleached blue of her clumpy old irises practically rolling in their sockets when she says, "Damen."

The sound of it causing him to stiffen, as he mentally and physically prepares for just about anything–anything except what comes next.

"Damen. Augustus. Notte. Esposito. You're the reason." Her wispy hair lifts and twirls in a manifested breeze that swirls all around. "And Adelina, the cure." She presses her palms together as her gaze pleads with mine.

I glance between them, unable to decide which is more disturbing: the fact that she knows his name–his full name, including one I've never heard before, along with one pronounced in a way I've never heard before, or the way Damen's face blanched and his body stilled the moment she blamed him.

Not to mention, who the heck is Adelina?

But the replies that swirl through his mind die long before they can reach his lips, halted by the lilt of her voice, saying, "Eight. Eight. Thirteen. Oh. Eight. It's the key. The key that you need."

I glance between the two of them, noting the way his eyes narrow, his jaw grinds, muttering a string of undecipherable words under his breath as he grips my hand tighter and attempts to heave us both out of the mud, away from her.

But despite his warning me not to look back, I do anyway. Glancing over my shoulder and staring right into those rheumy old eyes, her skin so fragile, so translucent, it appears to be lit from within, her lips softly yielding as she sings, "Eight–eight–thirteen–oh–eight. That's the beginning. The beginning of the end. Only you can unlock it. Only you–you–you–Adelina..."

The words lingering, haunting, taunting–chasing us all the way out of Summerland.

All the way back to the earth plane.

    Can't wait....for it to finish

It started out as a good series but now it's just dragging. IMO it should have ended 2 books ago. I am buying this for the sake of seeing it through but I've been bored for a little bit now. :-/ Sorry.

A Series Hard to Pass Up!!!!

This series is awesome! These books will pull you from the very first page of Evermore and will keep you biting your nails until the very last page of Night Star!!! These books will take you on adventures you will never embark on unless you approach this series. The journeys of Ever, Damen, Haven, and the rest of the crew, will shock you and leave you begging for more. Every emotion from love to anger to fear and shock! These books taught me an important lesson: Love never fails when it's meant to be! I definitely recommend this series to all young authors!!!!!=D

A must read will be loved by everyone from teens to older adults

My daughter recommended the Twlight books, which I read and loved. I was on the hunt for something as exciting and unique. This series captured me from page one! This series keeps you guessing is clean -almost too clean, you have no qualms about letting your daughter read this book with morals intact. It's definitely a stay up all night read. Looking forward to next book.

Let's just get it over with already

I agree, the series has become incredibly boring. The first book was good; but the ones that came after it have become redundant. The plot seems nearly the same in each book and the "Ever" character is just really dumb. It's time to wrap it up

    A Must Read!

After fighting each other, Damen and Ever finally have hope of reaching their destiny: being together. But will they overcome the powerful curse. I was hooked through the whole book. She took me on a journey through the series and I enjoyed nearly every step of the way. The series covers have always pulled me into the story. It is sad to come to an end!

    Great book!

I must say that I am sad to see the series end. This is one series that even before I was a book blogger that I was hooked on. Let me be the first to tell you that as a long time reader of Alyson Noel's and a big fan of The Immortal series that this book ended nicely. All loose ends were tied. All questions, were answered. And the first chapter was so dynamic and strong that I sat reading this book in my office while at work! I know, bad Savannah!

The first chapter was just wow. I knew once I started "glancing" at the book that I was in deep trouble. The first chapter has a very strong beginning, the reader sees Ever and Damen struggling in Summerland to find answers. What I like about this is the pacing and the plot line. The pacing was right on. I really liked that the reader got to go back to certain points in their history and re-connect with the present. It answers a whole lot of questions that I have always wondered, plus then some. It gave the reader a much broader history on Ever and Damen's relationship.

What also grabbed my attention in this book, is the lives they had in the past. Through out the series, we see several past lives, but this one, it was a SHOCKER! I was like,"OMG!" Gasping at my desk and looking by my office door to make sure no one heard me. Hehe. Ms. Noel did a fine job in bringing this element to life in the book. I felt every emotion, excitement, hurt, and anger while reading this. Simply fantastic!

The characters were more developed. In this book, you finally see them learn and grow. At times through out the series like books 4/5, I got frustrated that they weren't going anywhere. They were being stagnate. I was hoping for a change. Everlasting is the change of all changes. The characters finally develop in who they need to be in order to grasp their future!

If you haven't pick up this series you most definitely should! Not only will you fall in love with it, but it will give you an everlasting read worth reading. Am I happy with the way it ended? Yes. I think Ms. Noel did a mighty find job on clearing everything she needed to clear up in order to finish the series.
*There was some implied sex, kissing, few cursing*

    Waste of time.

I was so disappointed in this book. It bored me to tears. This series started out good, but just dragged on and on and the ending was so anti-climatic. It was to predictable. I expected more out of it.

    What"EVER"!!!!!

Aylson Noel captured my attention when I read her novel Evermore, but the rest of the series was put on hold by me to do and read other things. But when one of my students told me she loved reading Radiance this year, a companion novel to The Immortal series, I decided to pick up where I left off and read the rest of the series. Beginning with Blue Moon, I reacquainted myself with Ever and Damen, the two main characters. Damen has lived for over 600 years, and he is in love with the soul that inhabits the body of Ever Bloom. Ever recently lost her entire family in a car wreck, and Damen saves her from the same fate as her family by making her drink the elixir that will make her immortal, too.

Each book in the series takes Ever on an journey through teenage angst and questions about her soul. Each book becomes increasingly darker than the ones that came before in the series. Each book had the same plot format. I would get angry with my self for reading each book since I truly was not enjoying the storylines. And yet, I kept right on reading, waiting to see if Noel would indeed have Ever and Damen finally be together in the physical aspect. Needless to say, that was predictable.

However, the last book was my least favorite in the series. I understand an author wants the reader to ride along with the characters, pulling for them, talking to the characters as though they were indeed in the room with the reader. But, I found myself questioning the author as to why on earth she choose to take Ever on such an unusual course, a course so totally out of character for the series. I guess I'll never know.

The Immortal series is for high school readers or readers in middle school who are very mature. There are simply entirely too many references from the main characters about desiring "to be together" in the physical sense, and many "make-out" sessions.

All-in-all, I was disappointed in the series, though I was surprised with how Noel wrapped the ending up and presented it to the reader.

    Dude, Seriously? Bittersweet.

I absolutely loved this series, but halfway through the second book I'm like, Ever, get your self together woman! It's like her problems never end. Maybe she should just stop trying because let's face it: she's a total mess xD
Can't wait to read this book though!

Finally and Ending? I'll believe it when I see it

I agree, the series has been dragging along for awhile now. It should have ended at least 2 books ago. I am reading the ending hoping Ever and Damen will finally end up together, as I have been waiting for since the first book...I reccomend you not start the series now if you haven't yet b/c the whole series (all together, I think the first 2 books were good) is very...boring.

I have been biting my nails in anticipation for the last book to be released. this is a series you can't put down, I am sad to see it end, but also can't wait to get started on the spin off series going into Rieley's adventures in the after life :) Pure delight for me and I am well out of my teen years.

I love this series, however I have all the other books in my NOOK and I don't know why the last book is not available for the NOOK.. I really want to read the ending of this story, but don't want to buy the hard book when I have the NOOK.

review courtesy of One Book At A Time

I'm not sure how I feel about this series overall. For awhile there, I thought we were going in circles and not a single character was showing any growth. I knew that I would eventually read this final installment, but I also knew that I wasn't in any rush to get to it.

Ever actually surprised me during this story. It's like a light finally came on and she realized all the damage she's done to the people around her. Most of the story was focused on the idea of karma. I found this to be highly appropriate for the story. Many of the characters having being paying for their sins for centuries. I liked the journey that Ever has to go on the find this out. It really opens her eyes to the meaning of true immortality.

Up until the very end, I was afraid the Damen wasn't going to learn the same lesson. He seemed content to hold on the past and the way things have always been. I was surprised at that considering the lengths he has gone to to be with Ever. But, the final step proved to be harder step for him to take.

The odd thing with this story was that I found it very slow and sometimes boring. It lacked the spark that the other books had. While I sometimes found the characters infuriating in other books, I kept reading. This one did have that as much. Still, an overall satisfying end to the series.

    Disappointed

For all those people that are giving this book 4 stars and calling it amazing must have read a different book. I fell in love with Evermore and couldn't wait to continue the series, however after the second or third book it started to become redundant and over drawn. I believe the series should have ended at least 2 books ago. It was incredibly hard for me to find the motivation to finish this book because it was dull and boring. Most books i read, i don't want them to end and am sad when they do. However this book i couldn't wait to end. I was actually happy because it was finally over and i could move on to something better.

Dragged Out Plot, Annoying Paragraph long Descriptives, BUT still liked the world that was created

The Final ending of a series that started out with so much promise then ended up stalling out after book 2. When Noel goes in to descriptions there go on so long its tiring and anooying, which repeat over and over, and well over again. many times throughout the series you can help but think how much of an airhead the main character is. i do like the world that was created , the characters, and the idea behind the series which is the only reason i kept reading through the series, because the idea of an immortal , the powers , summberland, and all that is something i can so picture in my immagination, BUT the plot was dragged out WAY to long, the ending lacked the Ooomph it should of had, and everything was predictable. is so sad because there was so much potential of this series being as historical as Twilight , Harry potter , etc.. only to stall out after book 2. hopefully one day someone may write a series that has something to do with some type of immortal that has nothing to do with vampires , angels, etc.. like this was, but keep the feeling alive throught the series. this is a good book if you have time to waste like i did, but its nothing to be to excited about.
