Ramsey identifies the cause and effect as well as solutions to the problems

Dave Ramsey is a straight-shooter; he doesn't try to help people who have bungled financially feel good. He wants them to feel bad. They should; they screwed up. Being in a dark, deep hole is supposed to feel bad; and certainly Ramsey clearly identifies the most common causes -- from selfishness to instant gratification to lack of planning to impulsiveness to procrastination -- that cause people to dig themselves into a financial hole. Ramsey doesn't sugar-coat the effects of greed and stupidity; but he does provide a careful examination of the root causes of the symptoms. To him, the disease is important for people to cure; and he starts with essential values of justice, hope, and faith. Life isn't fair, but it is often just: people do reap what they sow (or, if they're buying on credit, what they don't sow). People need to have hope that they can change; and they need to have faith -- almost like a 12-step program -- that Someone can give them the character necessary to change their perceptions (needs vs wants/desires) and behaviors (saving/investing vs spending). Ramsey combines all the good advice that wise people from the 20s, 30s, and 40s remember as being "common sense" with current predicaments that naive, gullible, and self-centered consumers have created for themselves. With every spanking, Ramsey carefully reviews what caused the problem and how to avoid the problem in the future; in addition, he adds detailed tips about how to take control of finances, how to plan, how to manage, and how to succeed. Ramsey's style is neither brash nor hyper-technical; he writes clearly and directly with authority and credibility. His advice is sound, his principles are appropriate to anyone of any age, and reading his book can be a cost-effective investment for anyone who's in a financial hole or who's eager to avoid falling into one. Reading Ramsey is comparable to reading a wise, rich uncle's advice about how to succeed: beliefs inspire perceptions, perceptions inform plans, plans direct actions, and actions change lives. Much like a football coach who reminds NFL players about the importance of "the fundamentals," Ramsey starts at the center --the true purpose of having money (and it's not what the marketing gurus want you to believe)-- and working outward in very simple, practical steps to living a more liberated life.

    A reviewer

I bought this book with the last money I had left, feeling very down because I lost my business, house, cars and was pregnant with my 5th child with no health insurance and with an eviction notice already on my door of my rental place. This book completely changed my life, eventhough I am still struggling financialy, it is not because of not knowing how to manage money, it is simply because not enough money is yet coming in. My husband and I are working towards that goal now. But this book was the beginning of that change. I learned how to shop for the same items & brand for a lot less by using coupons and shopping elsewhere. I never thought I would enjoy buying cleaning supplies at the dollar store. I moved to a cheaper city and my only regret is not having known about dave ramsey sooner. I am also a listener of his show and really enjoy the good advice he gives us all. After all, the best advice can only come from someone who has been there!!

    I Also Recommend:

Live Like No One Else So You can Live Like No One Else!!!!! Dave Ramsey

I originally got my copy of Financial Peace while taking the course at my church. Because of the sound lessons I learned during my studies, I will soon have over $100,000 of debt paid off.

A previous reviewer mentioned the spiritual parts. That is because Dave Ramsey used many resources including the book of Proverbs to develop this incredible way of managing one's finances.

If you don't want the spiritual aspects, which are not overwhelming in this book by any means, you would probably enjoy the Total Money Makeover. They both have the same plan. TMM is more "secular".

Fantastic book for anyone looking for financial advice for daily living.

I have read numerous books on financial planning, and this is the best. One of the most important aspects to me was that Dave Ramsey included "Tithe" as one of the first expenses. His advice is sound, and works. I have already incorporated several of his ideas, and it has allowed me to be more on top of our finances.

    Great book!

    Useful

There is nothing extremeley profound in this book, but it makes sense and it can give you a fantastic game plan for addressing debt. We have employed his "snowball method" and it is working great. One thing he points out is that paying off debt is an investment and just because you are not putting money in a savings account now, you are investing in your future ability to do so. It just makes sense. I could do without all the sprituality stuff. While I do agree that everything is connected I think it is a bit much here, but that is what you get with Ramsey.
