Overview

A new magic is stirring beneath the surface of the Earth....

Five years have passed since David Rain, now a bestselling author, disappeared mysteriously in the Arctic. And slowly the ice is changing, bears are starving, dragons are rising, the souls of the Inuit dead are haunting the skies. The spirit Gaia, goddess of the Earth, is restless, aching to bring down her might upon these changes. But all living things may suffer if she does.

As the weather grows wilder and the ice caps melt, all eyes turn from the north to David's daughter, Alexa. She is the key to stopping Gaia...but can one girl save the world from the forces of evil, or will she disappear like her father?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The fourth book in the "Dragons" series picks up story threads begun in previous books, bringing the story arc forward. Zanna is still trying to get over the death of her partner, David Rain, while raising their little daughter Alexa. Yet her part-sister Lucy refuses to believe that David is actually dead, and that he somehow survived that disastrous day in the Arctic. She points to his still-living dragons as proof, but no one will listen. When her theory receives no support from her sister or mother Liz, Lucy enlists the help of Tam Ferrel, a reporter with an interest in David's disappearance after the publication of his bestselling children's books. Meanwhile, in the Arctic, three polar bears are on a quest to save the world and one of them has a deep secret that affects the rest of the characters. Fans of the series up to this point will enjoy the continuation of the lives of their favorite characters and the many secrets that begin to reveal themselves through the course of the novel. However, the book does not stand alone well, with many sections being hard to follow without already knowing something about the world and characters. Reviewer: Kathleen Foucart

Gr 5-8

In this sequel to Fire Star (Orchard, 2007), university student David Rain has disappeared on a research trip to the Arctic and is presumed dead. His landlady, Liz Pennykettle; her daughter, Lucy; and his girlfriend, Zanna, mother to his five-year-old daughter, are devastated. Lucy is convinced that David is not dead and is determined to find him. She contacts a local journalist, Tam Farrell (read Lin?) to help her. Her potter mother's clay dragons are real and can come alive. Meanwhile, powerful alien beings called the Fain, who use mind control to gain power, have returned to Earth. They had used this planet as a breeding ground for dragons, but all of the original dragons have been destroyed except Gawain, who lies sleeping in a rock waiting to be awakened to activate the Fire Eternal, or creation force. An evil offshoot of the Fain, the Ix, wants to harness the force for evil. Wise polar bears, an ancient witch/raven, a shape-shifting cat, Arthurian imagery, and a terrifying "darkling" all contribute to a wild, sometimes confusing ride. Threats of global warming and ecological disaster frame the action. Readers will need to read all of the books in the series in order to grasp the evolution of the plot. The characters, with their various magical abilities, are well drawn, and the collection of G-named clay dragons, each with a special job, provides a whimsical touch. A worthy addition to books on dragon lore.-Quinby Frank, Green Acres School, Rockville, MD

    Fabulous book!

I think The Fire Eternal is a great book! More people should read it. It's very exiting and a quick read! I also recommend reading the rest of the series, but in order. It's a great series!

    Blown Away

I'm amazed at how fast this series has grown. From thin children's book to very large(and very heavy) teen/kid book, it's impressed me, made me laugh and made me cry. If you don't like a fiction twist on real life, then don't read the whole series. But if you do like that kind of stuff, it's amazing. You'll love it, I promise you. And you know, I bet you your favorite character will become...

Uh, actually, that might spoil everything.

    A Student Review

I recently read The Fire Eternal, a fantasy by Chris D¿Lacey. The book is very interesting. There is a lot of detail and it leaves a lot of problems unsolved. In this book the dead rises and enemies turn to allies. The book is very hard to understand if you haven¿t read the rest of the series first.
Chris D¿Lacey is very mysterious. He always leaves questions to be asked. He uses a wide expanse of vocabulary that most people wouldn¿t understand. He always answers his questions with an even more interesting one. After the first few chapters, there is almost always a lot of suspense.
Anyone that likes dragons, polar bears, magical beings, and a lot of suspense should read this book.

    Coming from a kid

This is a thrilling series and Chris D'lacey captivates you more with every book. It's not just some dumb fantasy dragon book, it's a mystery of the arctic with characters that change in each book. It's fun and I have read this series like a trillion times. I wish i owned Snigger and the Nutbeast and White Fire. My favorite characters are Lucy and David. And don't forget Snigger! hrrrrr!

    Best of the series

This is 'hands down' the best book in the David Rain series! The mystery and suspence of the story is thriiling! It makes you think, every sentence, about what's going to happen next. The details are great, the setting is perfect, I can't name one mistake this book has in it and I've read it seven times! I'm already trying to get the next book in the series 'Dark Fire?' on hold. This book is pure genius and Chris D' Lacey is the best author in the world from my point of view!

Chris d'Lacey's series is entertaining. Confusing if read out of order. Ancient forces including dragons, polar bears, witches, and humans, collide in modern day joy and heartbreak. Best for 8-14 year olds.

    Excellent Book

I will say that Chris D'Lacey did an amazing job on this book and I was just too caught up in the story that I barely remembered to do other things than read. I recommend this book, not only to kids and teens but also, to the parents. I learnt some facts of the northern part of the world by just reading this book. I will also say that even though this was the last book of the Dragon Fire Series i'm extremely curious to find out what would happen next, if the story kept going on.
