Overview

Beauty and the Beast in a contemporary urban fantasy setting.

Beauty Meets Beast in San Francisco

Accepting employment as a governess after hard times hit her family, medieval scholar Rosalind Hawkins is surprised when she learns that her mysterious employer has no children, no wife, and she is not to meet with him face to face. Instead, her duties are to read to him, through a speaking tube, from ancient manuscripts in obscure, nearly forgotten dialects.

A requirement for the job was skill in translating medieval French, and she now understands the reason for that requirement, and assumes her unseen employer’s interest in the descriptions of medieval spells and sorcery is that of an eccentric antiquary. What she does not realize is that his interest is anything but academic. He has a terrible secret and is desperately searching for something that can reverse the effects of the misfired spell which created his predicament.

This is most definately a book worth reading.

If you enjoy getting a new look on an older story this is a good book for you. Mercedes Lackey manages to turn the tale of beauty and the beast into a story not only about beauty and love, but also magic and finding oneself. The characters are well thought out and the story draws you in until you actually think that this could really happen-maybe even to you.
Her characters are human and intriguing and you can easily see yourself in the characters that she describes.
If you've enjoyed her previous novels this one will be right up your alley.

    I Also Recommend:

    One of Mercedes Lackey's finest

It should first be stated that The Fire Rose is NOT part of the Elemental Masters series, though the world and the ideas of magic are the same. They were created first in this book, and then expanded in the later series keeping with the idea from this book of retelling old fairy tales in more modern settings with elemental masters. So some things perhaps don't gel with the others.
But this is a great book with great characterization. It might not be the most dramatic plot, but you do really care for the characters and their well being. Much like Beauty and the Beast, this is more about the two characters and their feelings than about any crazy action going on.
If you like fairy tales, definitely check this out. Mercedes Lackey fans should also be well and truly happy with it.

    Apart from the crowd...

But not from those of other fantasy books. I am meaning that if you are interested in Mercedes Lakey's Elemental Series, as canon and part in parcel, this book is the worst. The world she creates really does not even seem to be the same as the other books, though it does have better characterization than what you get from the other books in the series. Overall, not terrible, but it was a little more dry and less plot driven than the other books in the series. And I wasn't able to read it straight through like the other books in the series. I'm not even sure that I myself would place it in the same series. Try 'The Serpent's Shadow' to get the pick of the Elemental series books.

An absolutely fabulous alternative to Smutty Romance

I love romance books but this was fabulous as it portrays 'beauty & the beast' only there's no 'Steamy Gratuitous Love Scenes' it was a nice break as so many authors seem to think that's the only thing women want to read about. Highly Reccomended!!

    A brillant book

I really enjoyed this book. I have read it three times and I plan on buying it instead of borrowing it from the library. I love how you can just picture what is happening in the story. I recommend it to anyone.

Beauty and the Beast at it's Best

Magick was always the cause, but what if it was from a spell gone awry? Again the Prince has fallen due to his pride, but now he's a railroad baron who brought about his condition by his own hand. Jason never learned his lesson and now he needs someone else to help him learn it. When Rose comes into his life, everything changes... but does he *really* change?

    Possibly my Favorite Book EVER!

Mercedes Lackey has quite outdone herself, to be honest. In this treasure, Rose Hawkins meets Jason Camoren. Jason is an eccentric invalad with tastes that run into the arcane, more than just 'sometimes.' Rose is to read strange books to him through a macanical tube. At first, he keeps her in blissful ignorance, but she stumbles upon one of his secrets. You see, a rail barron such as Jason has many secrects. Jason is a Fire Master, and probably one of the most powerful ones to ever exsist. When a Salamander calls Rose to his personal rooms, she stumbles upon the beast that is Jason Camoren. Jason, due to his own arrogance and pride, stupidly tried a magic that he was ill suited for, and, if it was for anything, it would have been Earth Magic. He is part wolf, and is searching for a cure. But what he finds is a decent soul he could trust. The thing i enjoed most about the book was its beautiful plot, tantilizing charictors, and its delves into the magicks of a Fire Master and Air apprentice. I would recomend this book to most anyone whom has wanted to believe in magick, or who believes.

    My favorite Mercedes Lackey book

I have read every book that Mercedes Lackey has written, and though I love them all, this is my favorite. My copy is so thoroughly worn, I'm thinking about buying another. Ms. Lackey combines romance and magic in a way that will keep you up and turning pages long past your bedtime. It's definitely worth purchasing even if you've never read it before.

    fire rose

one of the best books i have ever read, and i have read a lot. it is hypnotic, and mystical, but not so much as to not be believable. it requires little imagination to get caught up in this story, even if you have read it many times, which i have. it is a rich and well weaved tapestry. just the right combination of real life and magic. i loved it.
