The First Elizabeth I as she grows from an exuberant, young queen to the arrogant, aging monarch.
A beautifully written personal history of one of Britain¿s greatest monarchs that is full of personal reflections and the details of the queen's day to day life. However, Erickson fails to connect the dramatic times and events of the era to the story of her life. In stead, the reader suffers through pages and pages of detailed descriptions of clothing, meals and court ritual, but is at a complete loss for historical perspective. Some of world¿s greatest characters and events were associated with Elizabeth, yet were all but left out of the story. The defeat of the Spanish armada warrented only a single page. William Shakespeare, Sir Walter Raleigh, and Sir Francis Drake received not even a full paragraph each, but details of make-up, hairstyles, party decorations, and meal preparation were given entire chapters. As a example of well written interior descriptions, the book is almost without peer, as meaningful history it is very disappointing.

I actually bought this book for an English lit class but enjoyed it so much I kept it after the class ended. Erickson's style is easy-to-read and has a good pace. Instead of a rote list of dates, it includes details of daily life such as expected behaviors, education, clothing and a fair glimpse of the up-and-down esteem Elizabeth was given during her childhood.

Overview
In this remarkable biography, Carolly Erickson brings Elizabeth I to life and allows us to see her as a living, breathing, elegant, flirtatious, diplomatic, violent, arrogant, and outrageous woman who commands our attention, fascination, and awe.
With the special skill for which she is acclaimed, Carolly Erickson electrifies the senses as she evokes with total fidelity the brilliant colors of Elizabethan clothing and jewelry, the texture of tapestries, and even the close, perfumed air of castle rooms. Erickson demonstrates her extraordinary ability ...
