Praise for L. A. Banks and the Vampire Huntress Series

Publishers Weekly
Weird energy is going down, and demon-killing Damali is not at all herself in Banks's seventh Vampire Huntress Legend (after The Damned). Soon after Damali walks out on her soul mate, ex-vampire Carlos Rivera, she meets a mysterious stranger who frightens-and tempts-her more than anyone or anything has before. Is he from the Light or from hell? Something is seriously wrong in the universe, and the forces of evil may be getting the upper hand. Banks lays a lot of wisdom on the line about male-female relationships, along with more of her complex cosmology that samples various religions, folklore and a wide array of myth. But it's the characters and their passions coupled with the author's wild imagination that drive the narrative. The story has gotten so complicated it may be difficult for a newcomer to fathom, but readers already enthralled with this sizzling series can look forward to major plot payoffs. Chapter One

The Shift

The day after Christmas, a horrific tsunami hit Southeast Asia, creating a natural and human disaster of biblical proportions. Disease and destruction lay in the wake of the giant wave, flooding and taking lives in eleven countries to the scale of Noah's time. But the animals sensed it was coming and were mysteriously saved. Ancient tribesmen, observant of nature's force, also strangely avoided destruction. But the cities . . . the tourists, all lay in ruins.

Humanity is now studying the instinctual nature of the animal kingdom. Tribal elders were asked how they knew, but their simplistic answers baffled scientists until debunked.

People in the fishing villages feared to eat the sea's yield, even while starving . . . so many bodies were in the water, and they reasoned that the fish had feasted upon that which the waters took.

Beyond the human suffering of more than a hundred and fifty thousand known dead, thousands missing, and millions left homeless and destitute with food shortages and tainted water, the power of the event actually shifted the planet—the Earth's poles moved to the east by a full inch, and time stopped for several milliseconds. It moved to the east . . . to the east . . . the east . . . perhaps east of Eden.

We do not yet know how this will influence the Earth's position amongst its planetary brethren. What we do know, however, is that everything in the universe is a fragile balance, like that of an immaculately designed Swiss watch. Move one part and misalign one gear, and then what? Astrologers have yet to weigh in on this matter, nor has the traditional scientific community. They simply have no answers.

All this while in the United States, Southern California has been deluged by unrelenting rains and the normally arid region was also covered by a blanket of snow . . . over one hundred and fifty inches has fallen on the Sierra Mountains . . . snow has even covered the desert region—Nevada . . . Texas and the Midwest experienced driving snowstorms . . . the Ohio Valley was covered in ice and floodwaters, forcing evacuations . . . this after four back-to-back hurricanes just devastated Florida's coast and the Caribbean, then one came that virtually wiped New Orleans off the map. Still there were more hurricanes, floods, tornados . . . forces of nature, also known by insurance companies as acts of God.

And, yet the world is still at war. Not even these cataclysmic events were enough to give mankind pause. In the ongoing human conflict, no one seemed to remember that even time stood still. The planet was rocked off its axis for milliseconds, but warring factions around the globe didn't seem to give a damn. They just kept on fighting, shooting, and blowing each other up. The stern warning is not being heeded.

Reading Group Guide

1. What do you think about Damali's struggle choosing between Carlos and Cain?

2. Ultimately in this saga, each Guardian has a personal hurdle to address or overcome for the good of the group. How necessary and realistic is it to relegate one's own deeply private issues to the background, as each member of the Neteru Guardian team does? In addition, discuss how the Neteru King and Queen Council members were forced to do this in some ways.

3. How is it possible for a person to be both honorable and dishonorable, like Cain? Discuss other real-life people who have acted both honorably and dishonorably.

4. Discuss Marlene and Carlos's battle before the team—her "purge process" of getting to Carlos's inner core and taking him to the rock. Were there other ways for her to identify with him? What has been the best way when you have had to do it?

5. What do you think about Juanita's role in all of this and her ultimate discovery?

6. What lessons did both Neterus learn this time that could be helpful in the future?

7. What effects do you think Damali's newfound powers will have in future battles?

8. What do you think the new paradigm between Carlos and Damali will do to other members of the team?

9. Which "newbie" Guardian(s) do you think will step up and begin to evolve into their powers next? (How?)

10. What new threat do you envision attacking the team? How will evil come for them next?

11. With this new twist in Damali and Carlos's relationship, what role might The Covenant play? What role do you envision for the covenant in Carlos's friendship with Yonnie, a vampire?

12. What temptations could easily befall the members of the Guardian squad in the same way both Damali and Carlos had been "tested" over the years? Who do you think is most at risk?

The first L. A. Banks book I ever read!

I fell in love with Carlos and Damali in this book. I read it for the first time in July 2008. My daughter checked it out of the public library for me. At first, I put it aside since I had never read any of L. A. Banks' books before. I had the book for a week before reading the summary on the back cover.

I was hooked from page one. After reading chapter 1, I went online to the library website and requested a copy of every book in the series that they had, which were the first five books and the Forsaken. Afterwards, I went to vampire-huntress.com to learn more about the books in the series and found out about the remaining books.

I put in another request to the library to get the remaining books; which they did. If you live in Tucson, AZ, you can find a copy for all the books except the newest one; since it just came out.

I had to purchase the books because my children, who are 21- and 15-years old kept costing me library fines because they were rereading the books so often they would forget to return them.

We have discussions, while laughing hysterically, about Carlos, Damali, and the Guardians. The whole Neteru team has become like old friends. I won't tell the ending of the last book, The Thirtheenth; all I'll say is "YOU HAVE GOT TO READ IT!". It's the perfect ending for an outstanding series.

Ms. Banks is one of my favorite authors and I'm looking forward to reading her werewolf series. If they're anything like VHL series, I'll end up buying those too.

    Slam! Bam! Thank You Ma'am!

Slam! Bam! Thank You Ma¿am! LA Banks has done it again!!! Her skill for weaving a story is phenomenal. One more story in the series that continues to bring it¿HARD!!! The main characters are complex, but identifiable. The scenarios are eerily similar to what¿s happening in our world today. The introduction of new characters with different issues, concerns & powers are seamlessly blended into the core of the series storyline. I LUV THIS STUFF!!! Like a dealer of LIGHT Ms. Banks spreads the wealth through her character studies and sends her readers on a joyride that¿s better than any monster rollercoaster on the planet. The new villain is sexy, strong, powerful & deceivingly irresistible. This book shows that even the Damali¿s family got problems to deal with. The Forsaken like all the rest in the VHLS is a must read, butcha can¿t have mine¿naw my brotha u got 2 getchure own!!!!

    A Good Read

I love the Damali Richards-Vampire huntress series. The Forsaken delves more into the units uniting itself spiritually and physically to be able to handle the oncoming apocalypse. I enjoyed it

    class A

No one can come close. Very detailed and in-depth.Characters are well defined and the series flows from book to book. What this author does with the light and the dark is riveting. Can't get enough. Should be a movie except it would probably be very expensive to make. Matrix type movie. I would most certainly suggest reading the entire series.

Great series, but sometimes a little slow

I started reading this series with Minion (#1). I love the books and really enjoy the characters and the way they interact. It would have been nice to see a little more happening with the other characters from time to time, even though Damali and Carlos are the main focus. I am looking forward to reading the next installment, in spite of the fact that the books tend to drag a little in places. The author gets bogged down in too much detail sometimes and I find myself skipping paragraphs. Apart from that I continue to enjoy these books and am anticipating the big end of the world blow out that I know is coming!! If you enjoy reading about the supernatural then give this series a shot.

Didn't do for me what the other books did!

I have read all of L.A. Banks Vampire Huntress books and have loved them all! I love her story telling, her characters, her fight between light and dark, but I did not feel that way about this book. For me, there was too much preaching, too much talking and not enough action. Parts were poignant, but parts were down right boring. This is the first book of this series that I just didn't get into. However, that will not stop me from buying the next one, the Wicked.

    Better and Better

Every book gets better and better whether you realize it or not you learn so much from reading The Forsaken that can sometimes be applied to every day living I LOVE IT I can't wait for the next book because I'm 100 percent positive it's going to be even hotter than this one. It's a gret break from reading 'urban' novels that only seem to reduce my vocabulary and brain cells

    Happily Surprised!!

I really enjoyed Forsaken. Ms. Banks did a smashing job delving into Damali and Carlos' relationship. I can't wait to see how the new members blend with the team. I can hardly wait for the Wicked and the return of Fallon Nuit. Thanks Ms. Banks.

    Love this BOOK!!

Oh my goodness, oh my freakin goodness. I'm just blowin away speechless even. LA Banks has me riding on a cloud high in the sky. I feel like I'm floating on air.............. This book is the seventh installment to the Vampire Huntress Legend Series. And boy oh boy is it something else. The characters have gotten more complex and I feel like I know them personally. This book took me places I could have only imagined. The locations and the new characters introduced. Oh my goodness. The character growth is really what makes this book outstanding as well as the introduction to new evils and whatnot. I loved that these characters have come to understand themselves and the ones they love. Outstanding, outstanding, outstanding............... What I love most about this series is the romance element. Amist all this happening (fighting demons, fighting evils, understanding people's view points) these characters still find the time to have love for one another. Great!................... Mrs. B took us there with this series and she made us believe with this one [The Forsaken]. Earlier books in the series prompted me to take a look at other titles by the author and I must say I am an avid Leslie Esdaile Banks fan for life. I'm proud that this series has achieved such success and now we have 12 books! ................. The next book out is entitled The Wicked and we fans are in for a wild ride that just won't stop. I can't wait! How about you?.....................

    PRAISE TO FORSAKEN

I had the pleasure of reading this book, and I experienced so many emotions I don't know where to begin. Not only was the story well written it was educational. If you know your history and the bible you will enjoy this book. To read about all of the guardians and realize that they carry the very life of humanity of the world on their shoulders and at the same time grow as people to learn to forgive and enjoy the life they have been given was inspiring. Please if you have not read Forsaken you are missing out on a great opportunity to meet some very exciting people.

    Waiting for book 8!!!

I enjoyed this edition in the Vampire Huntress series. I liked that I saw more growth and maturity develop in the characters, particularly Carlos, Damali, & Juanita. Carlos faced a personal competition that he arrogantly thought that he would never have to deal with--in the possible loss of Damali. Moreover, Damali finally let it be know that she can and will move away from Carlos if it what's best for her and the team, and Juanita is more receptive and understanding of her role and importance to the team and to Jose. Plus, there was plenty of action and suspense that made the Forsaken a page turner like the previous novels.

    Fabulous

Damali is a Neteru, a slayer of the supernatural entities that would destroy or harm humanity. Her mate is mixed breed Neteru vampiric human Carlos Rivera. He needs to be the dominant partner in their relationship as well as the leader of the Guardian team. However, Damali is tired of his macho pride and after a year away from her music she stops to compose again. At the moment of inspiration, a being walks into her room from the land of Nard in another dimension.------------- The Most High banished the hated demons and their human lapdogs into purgatory because disobeyed his command not to interact physically with humans. Lucifer¿s stomping around the seventh level of Hell until the barrier between two worlds lets in Damali¿s visitor. At first she assumes he is her muse, but soon admits Cain is a Neteru like her. He is a sexy handsome male who shows he desires Damali at a time she is vulnerable after fighting with Carlos. Cain¿s presence is a temptation while Lucifer and his wife Lilith manipulate Carlos, Damali and the other guardians into fighting among themselves. If the group continues on this path, they will not be effective in fighting for the Light in the end of days.---------------- The seventh Vampire Huntress legend tale is one of the best entries in a top rate series due to the growth of the prime characters. For the first time Carlos feels threatened by another man, a powerful Neteru with incredible bloodlines. Part romance, part horror and part mystical thriller, THE FORSAKEN is a bitingly delicious tale that mixes theology with the metaphysical to create a cleverly plotted one sitting reading experience.-------------------- Harriet Klausner
