Meet the Author
Melissa and Emily Elsen are sisters who were raised in South Dakota and worked in their parents' restaurant. They "have serious pie-making cred having grown up at the dough rolling elbow of their grandma Liz." (New York Magazine).
After pursuing different careers in their early adulthood, they built a business in Brooklyn, originally custom baking pies together in their Brooklyn apartment, and eventually opening 4 & 20 Blackbirds Cafe, which has been featured in The New York Times, Martha Stewart and in other great food media.

This is a gift for my daughter, by request. The book is beautiful and delicious; I can't wait to make pies together! SweetLife
Really nice photos. And even better recipes.
I bought this to read the history of my hometown girls who made it big in New York. My mother was the "egg lady" for the family restaurant in Hecla, SD. I read the book cover to cover for the wonderful recipes and pie baking hints and suggestions. I am gluten intolerant and enjoy making pies with gluten free flours. Inspiring! Make a special trip to the restaurant if you are anywhere near NYC.
I just received my book this past weekend and I have to say that it is excellent. I am an avid baker and I learned so much on how to make pies. From the very beginning of using the right equipment to how to create the perfect pie crust to finding excellent ingredients. This book is awesome. Now make sure you read the cover carefully because it does say "unusual" pie recipes. I found that most of these pie recipes are odd but they have to be delicious. I love trying new things: so I am able to prefect my pies whilst trying out new and awesome recipes. This book is set up in many easy to follow sections, and it is an easy read. Everything is explained and it is written so that if you need to make adjustments it would not be to strenuous of a job to do. All in all I loved this book and I cannot wait to try these recipes. I also cannot wait until I can actually go to New York and visit these wonderful women. Happy baking!!
