Biography

Nelson DeMille has a dozen bestselling novels to his name and over 30 million books in print worldwide, but his beginnings were not so illustrious. Writing police detective novels in the mid-1970s, DeMille created the pseudonym Jack Cannon: "I used the pen name because I knew I wanted to write better novels under my own name someday," DeMille told fans in a 2000 chat.

Between 1966 and 1969, Nelson DeMille served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. When he came home, he finished his undergraduate studies (in history and political science), then set out to become a novelist. "I wanted to write the great American war novel at the time," DeMille said in an interview with January magazine. "I never really wrote the book, but it got me into the writing process." A friend in the publishing industry suggested he write a series of police detective novels, which he did under a pen name for several years.

Finally DeMille decided to give up his day job as an insurance fraud investigator and commit himself to writing full time -- and under his own name. The result was By the Rivers of Babylon (1978), a thriller about terrorism in the Middle East. It was chosen as a Book of the Month Club main selection and helped launch his career. "It was like being knighted," said DeMille, who now serves as a Book of the Month Club judge. "It was a huge break."

DeMille followed it with a stream of bestsellers, including the post-Vietnam courtroom drama Word of Honor (1985) and the Cold War spy-thriller The Charm School (1988) Critics praised DeMille for his sophisticated plotting, meticulous research and compulsively readable style. For many readers, what made DeMille stand out was his sardonic sense of humor, which would eventually produce the wisecracking ex-NYPD officer John Corey, hero of Plum Island (1997) and The Lion's Game (2000).

In 1990 DeMille published The Gold Coast, a Tom Wolfe-style comic satire that was his attempt to write "a book that would be taken seriously." The attempt succeeded, in terms of the critics' response: "In his way, Mr. DeMille is as keen a social satirist as Edith Wharton," wrote The New York Times book reviewer. But he returned to more familiar thrills-and-chills territory in The General's Daughter, which hit no. 1 on The New York Times' Bestseller list and was made into a movie starring John Travolta. Its hero, army investigator Paul Brenner, returned in Up Country (2002), a book inspired in part by DeMille's journey to his old battlegrounds in Vietnam.

DeMille's position in the literary hierarchy may be ambiguous, but his talent is first-rate; there's no questioning his mastery of his chosen form. As a reviewer for the Denver Post put it, "In the rarefied world of the intelligent thriller, authors just don't get any better than Nelson DeMille."

Good To Know

DeMille composes his books in longhand, using soft-lead pencils on legal pads. He says he does this because he can't type, but adds, "I like the process of pencil and paper as opposed to a machine. I think the writing is better when it's done in handwriting."

In addition to his novels, DeMille has written a play for children based on the classic fairy tale "Rumpelstiltskin."

DeMille says on his web site that he reads mostly dead authors -- "so if I like their books, I don't feel tempted or obligated to write to them." He mentions writing to a living author, Tom Wolfe, when The Bonfire of the Vanities came out; but Wolfe never responded. "I wouldn't expect Hemingway or Steinbeck to write back -- they're dead. But Tom Wolfe owes me a letter," DeMille writes.

Chapter One

I first met Frank Bellarosa on a sunny Saturday in April at Hicks' Nursery, an establishment that has catered to the local gentry for over a hundred years. We were both wheeling red wagons filled with plants, fertilizers, and such toward our cars across the gravel parking field. He called out to me, "Mr. Sutter? John Sutter, right?"

I regarded the man approaching, dressed in baggy work pants and a blue sweatshirt. At first, I thought it was a nurseryman, but then as he drew closer, I recognized his face from newspapers and television.

Frank Bellarosa is not the sort of celebrity you would like to meet by chance, or in any other way, for that matter. He is a uniquely American celebrity, a gangster actually. A man like Bellarosa would be on the run in some parts of the world, and in the presidential palace in others, but here in America, he exists in that place that is aptly called the underworld. He is an unindicted and unconvicted felon as well as a citizen and a taxpayer. He is what federal prosecutors mean when they tell parolees not to "consort with known criminals."

So, as this notorious underworld character approached, I could not for the life of me guess how he knew me or what he wanted or why he was extending his hand toward me. Nevertheless, I did take his hand and said, "Yes, I'm John Sutter."

"My name's Frank Bellarosa. I'm your new neighbor."

What? I think my face remained impassive, but I may have twitched. "Oh," I said, "that's ..." Pretty awful.

"Yeah. Good to meet you."

So my new neighbor and I chatted a minute or two and noted each other's purchases. He had tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and basil. I had impatiens and marigolds. Mr. Bellarosa suggested that I should plant something I could eat. I told him I ate marigolds and my wife ate impatiens. He found that funny.

In parting, we shook hands without any definite plans to see each other again, and I got into my Ford Bronco.

It was the most mundane of circumstances, but as I started my engine, I experienced an uncustomary flash into the future, and I did not like what I saw.

    My favorite book of all time

    This is my favorite book of all time. I read it about 2 years ago and have read it agian since. John Sutter (like John Corey) is another DeMille protagonist that you can easily develop a "literary-crush" on.
    The story starts out very slow going through the history of the gold coast. if you can get through that, it is the most amazing story. If you read this, you must follow up with the sequel "The Gate House." It is not at all slow paced like The Gold Coast. It grabs you from the first page and doesn't let go. I'm just hoping for a trilogy!

    The Gold Coast

    Start with a witty, cynical attorney, if you can imagine such a person. Add his saucy, sultry wife. Mix in a generous helping of organized crime chieftan, sex, and murder, place on a hot flame, stir not so gently, and there you have it. The perfect recipe for a great book: master fiction writer Nelson DeMille's seminal work, "The Gold Coast." The tragic confluence of these ingredients might well have been dubbed "the perfect storm." But that more literal title was saved for a different book written years later by a different author. DeMille weaves a gripping tale with equal measures of humor, titillation, and dramatic tension in his captivating "page turner" style. From the story's early moments describing John and Susan Sutter "horsing around" in both the equine and physical sense, you won't want to put it down. Then, when you are finished and put it down you must, pick up DeMille's 2008 sequel written 18 years later in real time, and ten years later in story time. If you loved their first encounter, you will enjoy the twists and turns of John and Susan Sutter's tumultuous reunion with one another, and with the crime chieftan's kin, back on Long Island's Gold Coast in "The Gate House."

    Great mental imagery

    I read this after reading THE GATE HOUSE which was given to me. Even though I knew the ending and basic story before I picked up the book I did make a goal-oriented trip for purchase. The writing style creates a clear imagery of our country's rich, famous, and infamous. The attitudes, behaviors, perceptions and even the isolation of the rich is believable. Not being rich or famous, I have to assume the portraits are realistic and objective. I loved this book but definitely recommend reading GOLD COAST first. THE GATE HOUSE picks up where the GOLD COAST ended obviously. When reading THE GATE HOUSE the writing style (first person silent thoughts, etc.)was a distraction: a bit wordy and ardurous. (After acceptance of the writing style, it was smooth sailing!) GOLD COAST absolutely required this writing style and would be a "comfortable" fit in THE GATE HOUSE if the books were read in order. Read both books in correct order. I'm on my way for another DeMille book!

    DeMille's best

    I'm certain that many people agree - although *every* DeMille book is completely enjoyable and hard to put down - this is by far his best written. The characters are well drawn, letting you identify, love or hate them. Though I rarely laugh out loud while reading books, I did so often while reading this one. I love DeMille's sense of humor!
    I've read this book twice and will likely do so again in the future.

    Probably DeMille's Best Book

    The Gold Coast is an awesome read. Nelson DeMille is indisputably a fantatic writer whose books grab the reader and just won't let go, but this might be his very best. You won't want to put it down once you start reading, and you'll wish there was more when you finish. Lucky you - he just wrote a sequal, nearly 20 years after the publication of The Gold Coast - entitled The Gate House.

    Read everything by DeMille - he's great.

    This is probably my favorite book of all times! I read it in two sittings (and this is a BIG book) - could NOT put it down! I became an instant Nelson DeMille fan right then and there. Since then, I have purchased every single book he has written in hardback - and several copies of The Gold Coast in paperback to give to friends I thought would enjoy it. I laughed out loud at times, I held my breath, and got completely immersed in the lives of these completely fleshed out characters. Mr. DeMille has an uncanny way of painting a verbal picture of his characters that make them seem to come off the page in living, breathing form. His plots are intricate and fascinating and have kept me totally engaged from page one to the end. I always end up impatiently awaiting his next book! Can you tell I AM a fan??

    Great read!

    Really good book

    Once again DeMille comes through in spades! This book was so funny, his tongue-in-cheek humor just makes me laugh out loud in many places. While stuck in northbound traffic on I-95 in Georgia after Christmas, I started reading the book out loud in the car. Everyone else was laughing too. It is about a Mafia boss and his blueblood lawyer next-door neighbor, and the relationship that develops between the two men and their wives. I'm ready now to read the follow-up The Gate House. Maybe I'll go get it today...

    Tight story

    Loved this novel. Was a little lengthy, but kept me turning the pages all the way through. Even though you know what's coming in the end, it happens with a twist that you really don't expect. Thoroughly enjoyable, will re-read one day in a few years and enjoy it just as much!

    Waiting

    Always among the most intellectual and introspective of 'who done it's' author's. Just started reading him last yr and now just waiting for his next. Bought one then went back and bought all the rest and that was the first month.

    Fun, fun, fun

    I loved this book when I first read it, and even more the second time, years later. The story deals with a preppie lawyer going through a midlife crisis, and what happens when a Mafia Don buys the mansion next door. Very fun. Lots of steamy sex and a good amount of violence, all balanced by a great sense of humor.

    In our book club of about 15 readers on the day we reviewed this book, I was the only one who gave this less than an eight on a scale of one to ten. I could only muster up a three. The only things I enjoyed about the book were the author's sense of humor and the history and scenery descriptions of the region. I am just a dumb blonde, but there were a couple of factual errors that bothered me. I did not like the fact that there was no character for whom I felt empathy, unless it could have been the waitress in one of the restaurants. I like to have at one character with some sort of moral fiber, but I could fine none in this book. I read the book to the end, as I felt the end might justify the long book, but it did not. I will read another book by DeMille, as several book club members have recommended. Would I recommend this book to someone else? My daughter and I exchange books frequently, and she asked me about the book. I told her I found it irritating, and asked if she'd like to read it. She said, "Why would I want to read it if it's irritating?" Maybe misery loves company!

    A Book Worth Re-Reading

    When I ordered this book, it was so that I could re-read it before reading the new one, "The Gate House". And it is well worth it. This book really has all the elements of a great American story. And the writing is superb. Nelson DeMille tells a story like no one else.
