Children's Literature
The Beacon Street Girls are a clique of middle school pre-teens who satisfy several rather trite female stereotypes. The ringleader is Katani, who is described as "business savvy," despite her mere twelve years of life experience. Avery is the athlete; Charlotte is the intellectual; Isabel is the artist, and Maeve is the aspiring actress. These major characters are oversimplified, presented as stereotypes rather than developed characters. The novel begins with a distracted Charlotte attempting to focus in social studies class. As head of her school's Outdoor Adventure Club, she is excited to tell her classmates about a scavenger hunt that will take place in nearby Cape Cod. The story unfolds as the Beacon Street Girls, their classmates, teachers, and older sibling chaperones embark on the competitive hunt. Because this is the fifteenth novel in the "Beacon Street Girls" series, it is a bit difficult to keep track of the scavenger hunt teams' numerous members. Also, there are some consistency issues in the text. For example, one actor is repeatedly referred to as Ontario Plume and then later the same character is called Orlando Plume. Overall, this is an easy read for adolescents, but the quality of content and writing leaves much to be desired. Reviewer: Jennifer Morrin
