Overview

A multicast performance with music and sound effects featuring Bruce Boxleitner.  Story orginally published in the April 1943 issue of Science Fiction Stories.

  • The Great Secret

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Hubbard's classic pulp fiction tale was originally published in 1943 but shows no signs of age. With the tremendous attention to detail and production, audiences will find themselves captivated from beginning to end. This multicast performance, headed by Bruce Boxleitner, is a wonderfully rich and textured experience, complete with realistic sound effects and moody atmospheric score. The result is an almost theatrical experience, with Boxleitner leading listeners on a futuristic journey that will have their pulses racing and imaginations running wild. Also included are three shorter science-fiction tales, each as entertaining as the last. A Galaxy Press paperback.(Sept.)

Meet the Author

With 19 New York Times bestsellers and more than 230 million copies of his works in circulation, L. Ron Hubbard is among the most acclaimed and widely read authors of our time. As a leading light of American Pulp Fiction through the 1930s and ’40s, he is further among the most influential authors of the modern age. Indeed, from Ray Bradbury to Stephen King, there is scarcely a master of imaginative tales who has not paid tribute to L. Ron Hubbard.

Read an Excerpt

Sweeping clouds shadowed the tawny plain, and far off in the east the plumes of night spread gently, mournfully, burying the corpse of the Livian day. Fanner Marston, a tattered speck upon a ridge, looked eastward, looked to the glory he sought and beheld it.

Throat and tongue swollen with thirst, green eyes blazing now with new ecstasy, he knew he had it. He would gain it, would realize that heady height upon which he had elected to stand. Before him lay the Great Secret! The Secret which had made a dead race rule the Universe! And that Secret would be his, Fanner Marston’s, and Fanner Marston would be the ruler, the new ruler, the arbiter of destiny for all the Universe!

L. Ron Hubbard

    I Also Recommend:

    This one is my favorite

Of the new L. Ron Hubbard Golden Age of Stories Pulp Classic series this one is my favorite so far. It's a terrific read and also a fantastic E-Book. The book is an exiting page turner, pure unabashed adventure science fiction at it's best. The audio book surprised me with the level of quality book. I have been horribly dissapointed by audio books in the past but I could not more strongly recommend this one.

Although L. Ron Hubbard wrote in many genres, he was best known

Although L. Ron Hubbard wrote in many genres, he was best known for his science fiction and fantasy. "The Great Secret" was originally published in Science Fiction Stories in April, 1943. The story centers around Fanner Marston, a greedy and power-lust individual who is in quest of the great secret; a secret which could make him ruler of the universe if discovered. Fanner crash lands near Parva, a magical city that myths foretell holds that secret. Being the sole survivor of a dangerous and risky journey, he believes the secret will be his. When Fanner finally finds both the city and the great secret, was it folly or worth the risk of death? As an added bonus, the science fiction stories, "Space Can," "The Beast," and "The Slaver" are also included in this pulp.

    Good pulp fiction

I enjoy reading pulp fiction and I appreciate actions that Adventure House, Vintage Crime and Galaxy Publishing are taking to bring it back for us to read. I think the use of the original pulp cover art in the Galaxy line is exceptional and the stories in "The Great Secret" were a delight to read -- there are actually 4 stories in this book. I really enjoyed the short story "The Slaver." It was a good combination of science fiction, overcoming insurmountable odds and a bit of a love story all in one.

    Just a great story!

I read this story and thought to myself, what a lesson to be learned and all from a science fiction story. Great entertainment, just pure fun to read! I have to say that this series has been a rocket ride so far. I've read all 5 of these. I hope more are coming out soon! I'm looking for them.
