In this 1891 collection of ten stories, divided into two parts, "Before Dinner" and "After Dinner," Hardy returns to his invented county of Wessex for a behind-the-scenes look at the dynamics of country families and the women that hold them together: "a store of ladies, whose bright eyes rain influence."

Thomas Hardy was probably at his best in short stories, rather than the long, complex novel structure. These short stories are well-told, timely gems that will be hard to forget.
