I was afraid I wouldn't like this book - boy, was I wrong!
When the author, who is a friend of mine (disclaimer), asked me to help her format her cover for the print version, I didn't expect to read this book. But each time I saw the description, I grew more intrigued, and finally had to check it out, even though I typically don't read YA. So I downloaded the sample, and was even more worried I wouldn't like it, because it's written in first person, present tense. I realize FP/PT is very common in YA, but I normally can't stand it. Yet, by the second time I hit page-down, the book had pulled me in so strongly I no longer noticed.
Fifteen-year-old Alexia is an outcast, a weird girl who sees auras that clue her in to the amount of good and evil in a person, and who's been bounced from foster home to foster home since she was young. Her new foster parents are too good to be true, and the gorgeous new boy who rescues her from bullies on their first day at her new school is also too good to be true. But despite Alexia's efforts to push him away, Gabriel sticks around, and the two become fast friends with a growing, underlying attraction they can't deny.
Eventually, it comes out that Gabriel is a Seraphim, a guardian angel whose purpose is help Alexia deal with and accept her incredible gift and destiny. With Gabriel's help and encouragement, Alexia puts the past and her fears behind her, and slowly begins to accept her gifts, friendship from others, and most of all, who she is. Their love story is sweet and poignant, with touches of humor and tearjerker moments. As others have mentioned, the ending is heart-wrenching, yet it's surprisingly uplifting at the same time.
If you enjoy YA with a positive, paranormal element, The Guardian is a must-read. Even if you don't normally read this type of story, I encourage you to check it out - you won't be disappointed.
