Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
These two titles address the benefits of practicing yoga. Finger's Yoga ZoneR Introduction to Yoga takes a broader approach. Creator of the ISHTA yoga taught at his New York City-based Yoga ZoneR studios, Finger explains his program and offers a brief history of different types of yoga. Outlines of two series of beginners' programs are well illustrated with photos of poses and accompanied by detailed instructions, tips, and variations. A section covers relaxation and meditation and breathing techniques. Healing Mudras has a much narrower focus. Mudras, in Buddhism and Hinduism, are symbolic gestures involving hands, fingers, and arms that are used in ceremonies and dance or seen in artwork. Mesko, a former dancer and certified yoga therapist, takes a mindful and introspective approach combining movement with chants in order to achieve specific self-affirming goals. All 52 mudras are demonstrated with photos of the author, along with instructions for breathing, eye movements, and mantras, which spoken aloud impart greater mental and physical energy and a healing quality. Experienced yoga students seeking to move beyond the basic postures or individuals with physical limitations will find this guide useful. Both titles are easy to follow and understand. However, since a number of introductory yoga books are already available, Finger's is an optional purchase. Because it concentrates on a very specific aspect of yoga practice, Mesko's guide is a preferred choice for a wellness collection or public library with a limited budget seeking to round out its yoga collection.--Deborah Anne Broocker, Georgia Perimeter Coll., Dunwoody Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.\

Healing Mudras: Yoga for Your Hands

My girlfriend bought this book for me, and I have to say I was skeptical. I am not a 'New Age' kind of guy. But this book is good. The photos show clearly what to do, and the information straightforward and clear. The great thing about these mudras is you only have to do them for a few minutes, with the specific breathing technique she outlines, and you can feel them work. I do them in my office, and at home with my girlfriend. It is a healthy and easily integrated practice. I'm convinced, but I still won't eat tofu.

Healing Mudras: Yoga for Your Hands

I highly recommend Healing Mudras, Yoga For Your Hands. This book gives an in depth study for each mudra, or hand gesture, explains excactly which chakra and what condition it specifically helps. It is easily understandable and clear in regards to breathing and detailed photos show how easily this practice can be done. I have been looking for a book on this subject and was worth the wait. I got the videotape as well, and it is the best! I suffer from migraine headache and have found actual relief by doing these Mudras. Run don't walk to get this book!

    So what are mudras?

I waited for this book with anticipation. I received it and had to read it over and over to check and see if I was missing something. I did not, it simply wasn't in there. This book could have been written by a newpaper writer, who had done brief research on the art of mudras, and worded his findings in a sunday paper article. The author here, commited no more than a paragraph to most aspects of mudra, barely even brushing over the manner and reasoning of use. I know no more about mudras than before I read this book. I hope this new trend of bubble gum writing comes to an end. I am surely tired of wasting my time and money on it.
