Overview

From the moment he and his mother arrived from England, everything about India shouted adventure to fourteen-year-old John Knight. Crowds of people swarmed in the streets, temple elephants paraded about, monkeys scolded at passers-by—this was easily the most exciting place John had ever been. If only his father, a British government official sent to south India in 1909, will allow him to explore it.

But John and his mother are not prepared for what they discover when they befriend an Irish missionary named Amy Carmichael. With a heart for justice, John is shocked to learn that a young Indian girl rescued by Carmichael is a "child bride" being legally forced by her wicked uncle to marry an elderly man! Is it possible that John’s father might be called upon to uphold this horrible law?

What will happen if John does not act? Who will save Jewel? Will all the fears mirrored in Jewel’s eyes come to pass?

An adventure story, ideal for readers 8-12 years of age.

Editorial Reviews

National Review
There’s no better way to introduce your 8 to 14 year olds to Christian heroes than through these exciting works of historical fiction. Each narrative brings today’s youngsters into close contact with a man or woman of faith as seen through the eyes of a child whose life intersects in a dramatic way with the famous Christian. The stories give accurate portrayals both of history and of the character of the Christian hero while holding kids captive to a tale of adventure.

Say “history” and many people yawn. Say “novel” and others think the book’s not true. But everyone loves a good story about real people and actual events touched with a dab of fantasy. I was about to ask the authors what was true and what was not, but their books have a page answering exactly that question. That is most helpful. Dave and Neta Jackson are masters in writing historical novels…for ages 8-12, though many adults can’t resist.
