Overview

Now that George Chapman has upset the fragile truce between the warring statues of London, he has been drawn into a war that will test his mettle. He and Edie, a glint who can see the past, may have succeeded in their quest to find the Stoneheart, but their journey is far from over.

Edie and the Gunner, a statue of a World War I soldier, have been captured by the Walker, and it’s up to George to save them. But first he must deal with the three strange veins, made of marble, bronze and stone, that have begun to grow out of his hand and curl around his wrist. Legend has it that unless he successfully completes three challenges, the veins will continue up his forearm, and eventually pierce through his heart.

As George struggles to find the strength within to face the choice he has made, to take the Hard Way, he is determined to use his power for good—even as others wish to harness it for its great potential for evil.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal

Gr 5-9- In this sequel to Stoneheart (Hyperion, 2007), George, 13, Edie, 12, and the Gunner continue to flee from the Walker, a man cursed to walk the Earth forever, and from "taints," evil, soulless statues. George has accidentally upset the balance in this alternate London, a place where statues can get up and roam. Edie is kidnapped by the Walker, who wants to use her talents as a "glint," someone who can touch stone or metal and see into history, and to lure George into his malignant grasp. Meanwhile, the Walker has also dumped the Gunner, a World War I statue and self-appointed protector of the children, into the depths beneath the city. If the Gunner cannot return to his statue base by midnight, then he will never walk off his plinth again. George, alone and confused by his new status as a potential "maker," someone with the ability to create statues, sets out to rescue Edie and keep the Gunner from losing his "life." Ironhand is a well-written, fast-paced, and suspenseful fantasy. Fletcher successfully draws readers in with action and a continuously developing backstory for each of the characters. However, though the author includes a brief overview of the first book, this one does not stand on its own.-Jessica Miller, New Britain Public Library, CT

Kirkus Reviews
A rousing middle volume makes up for the flaws in its predecessor, Stoneheart (2007). Edie and George seek their friend the Gunner, a World War I memorial statue who can leave his plinth anytime except midnight. The vile Walker, roaming the earth immortally, has kidnapped him. As George and Edie set out, a gargoyle snatches George. After being tossed and battered in the air, George evades multitudes of taints (malevolent creature statues) and confronts a knight before learning that he must fight three duels. Edie needs help and information, but an unexpected betrayal leads her to a past London where she "glinted" her murder at the Walker's hands. She fights fiercely, but the scene of the Walker drowning her in the Thames plays out horrifyingly just as she foresaw from the present. Underground, the steady Gunner scrapes his way to safety, gently gathering the heart stones that the Walker stole from girls and women he slaughtered. George spends one wrenching hour in a WWI battle. Where the first volume's prose was dry, Ironhand's is crisp. Fast-paced, serious and gruffly tender. (Fantasy. 10-13)

    Fun Read!

I enjoyed this book as the second in a series about two young children and a bunch of good or evil statues. Book one gave us the background that setup this second book which brings us 2 thirds of the way to the conclusion. The author develops the characters very well in these books and I enjoy the merging of British history with the storyline.

This is the best book EVER!!!!!!!!!!

This is my favorite book of all timmes!my fave part is when george beat up the Walked!Charlie Fletcher is good at writing! This book kept you turning pages. Every time the Gunner is in a life threatining situitaion, your always holding your breath to see if you survive. I love the ending, with the frost fair, and how george displays how much courage and bravery he has. This is the best book. I also liked how Georghe stood on the Gunner's plinth to save him from dying, even though he knew he would have to go back to the first world war. Charlie Fletcher, Please write the third book, and finish it soon!!!!!!!!1I'm about to die from the suspence of how you ended the second book. Please hurry!!~!!!!!!!1

    I Also Recommend:

I love Stoneheart trilogy, but I know London

This is the middle book of the Stoneheart trilogy. I love it. It stars 2 tween kids, a poor girl and a well-off boy ~ sort of the 'Romeo & Juliet' pattern but just friends ~ in a series of life-or-death encounters that they must survive on their own, with no helpful adults nearby. I easily see the story through both kids' eyes although they are not as robust characters as, say, Lyra and Will in the His Dark Materials trilogy. trilogy. I vote zero for classroom reading in the USA because the London setting is too foreign to almost every American. If only these novels had included maps of the characters' treks back and forth across London and also images of the many London statues that come to life to feature as main characters. I've been to London often enough to have a feel for the cross-city trekking and a memory of some of the statues. Most of the other statues are pictured in Wikipedia.

    Even Better Than The First!

The second of the Stoneheart trilogy, I found this to be even better than the first book. The characters were more developed, as was the storyline. Also, the pace was quicker, more fluid, and more engaging. Definitely a must read.
