Great read for all genre lovers

It's been a long time since I could read 3 books as long as this series, but not only does Sherwood Smith keep you guessing at every turn, she writes in a way that leaves you staying up at night doing nothing but thinking about the characters and how you would react if you were them. This is the first time in a very long time that i read a book this big in three days or less for each, HIGHLY recommended, this is definitely a series worth reading more than once...

    Exponential complexity

This book reminds me of Shostakovic's Eleventh Symphony. It begins slowly, weaving the themes, then builds inexorably to a gripping, crashing climax. It's impossible to predict where these books are going, as no one behaves like conventional heroes and villains. That is not to say that there is no moral explication. On the contrary. All the main characters struggle with questions of morality, from personal lives to the effects of war.

The third Inda military fantasy (see INDA and THE FOX) is a fabulous thriller

Inda left in self imposed exile as a preadolescent to preclude a monarchy crisis. In the nine years of his absence, his friend Evred became the King instead of Inda¿s older brother who was murdered and married to Inda¿s sister Hadand. Meanwhile Inda learned naval warfare while spending time with prates and has become a military hero after winning a major sea battle.------------ Inda accompanied by his beloved Dag Signi, a Venn sorceress, comes home to warn his ruling family that the Venn plan to invade. He is stunned to find Evred as the ruler, but also shocked that he is the heir to Choraed Elgaer and must marry his childhood friend Tdor both have loved one another, but he also is committed to Signi. However, working through his feelings and what is good for his people are on hold as Evred asks Inda to lead their army. Though a naval expert, Inda agrees even if he feels like a fish out of water.------------- The third Inda military fantasy (see INDA and THE FOX) is a fabulous thriller, which ironically takes an anti-war stand as Edwin Starr¿s song War asks 'what is it good for?¿ Signi answers with her scornful legalized murder argument. The vivid story line is fast-paced even when chapters are devoted to preparation as Sherwood Smith also responds to the question ¿What is it good for?¿ with a resounding 'absolutely nothing¿. This is an excellent military fantasy that pulls no punches in openly describing the horrors of war on everyone not hiding the consequences from her readers.----------------- Harriet Klausner

    an enthralling read

This series was my first introduction to Sherwood Smith. So far, it is a gratifying experience. Many authors aren't able to sustain the reader's interest through an entire series. That isn't the case here. Ms. Smith has created a complex world with original (to me) social customs and it all works. What I like best is the complicated plot where no one is safe and where I haven't any idea of how it is going to turn out though I can see some unpleasant possibilities.

    Ugh!

I could not even finish this book! All respect to Ms. Smith but after two hundred pages of Evred pining over Inda, I just had to put this one down. I have every confidence in Ms. Smith's abhorrence for war and even agree with her. I do not agree with Ms. Smith that Evred's feelings for Inda should be SO overwhelming to be in page after page. Please, I just think that the character should have more on his mind!
