Overview

"Live the romance. Read Loretta Chase" -- Christina Dodd

The traditional English Regency from New York Times bestselling author, Loretta Chase, is back...

Lilith Davenant, has ample reason to detest Julian Wyndhurst, Marquess of Brandon: he's exactly the kind of man who hastened the demise of her profligate husband, and the debt he owed to Julian has forced her to an engagement with a wealthy suitor for the sake of supporting her beloved nieces and nephews. Besides that, Lord Julian somehow manages to ignite disturbing...feelings...she's never felt before!

Lord Julian used his considerable skills and cunning in the war against Napoleon. Now he's obliged to use the same talents to save his young cousin from a disastrous marriage to a scheming mistress - who makes him a wager: If Julian can seduce the famously icy Lady Lilith Davenant, the lady will release his cousin from the engagement.

But very quickly, Julian discovers Lilith's hidden warmth, kindness and humor. Will he be able to prove his heart to her before she learns of his recklessly shameless wager?

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Witty dialog and a sprightly pace raise this novel above a pedestrian plot common to many Regency and other romances--accomplished libertine loses wager that he will seduce one of society's noted prudes because he falls in love with her. However, this novel adheres more closely to the conventions than many recent additions to the Regency genre. Clever repartee and glimpses of intriguing depth in major characters and political events make one wish that the author had developed them further. Still, this is a highly diverting book from a veteran Regency author, and certain to appeal to Regency devotees. Meet the Author

After a heroic attempt to be an English major forever, Loretta Chase stoically accepted her degree but kept on reading and writing. As well as working in academe, she had an enlightening if brief life in retail and a Dickensian six-month experience as a meter maid. In the course of moonlighting as a corporate video scriptwriter, she succumbed to the charm of a producer, who lured her into writing novels -- and marrying him. The union has resulted in what seems like an awful lot of books and quite a few awards, including the Romance Writers of America's Rita. Heralded as "...the long awaited successor to Georgette Heyer" by Library Journal, Loretta Chase's historical romance novels have been published all over the world. The intro is a list of MSO font definitions and the next 28 pages are chapter headers with no content. The book may be wonderful, but the ebook is broken.

I never got to read this book. It will not work on my nook. Took it into the store and they could not make it work. Someone was supposed to get back to me and never did!

Excellent. The book is reminiscent of Georgette Heyers best. The hero is absolutely breathtaking. Copyright 1990. This is an out of print book now available as an ebook. All of Chase's fans will be grateful to have these previously difficult to find books.

Early book of hers that I really enjoyed. Great characters and witty dialogue. Old school of the best kind. Now one of my faves of hers.
