Overview

Every avid knitter has faced this dilemma: deep into a project at midnight, just trying to finish one more row, and, then . . . oh no, a dropped stitch three rows back! Help! If only there was a 24-hour hotline to answer every question a knitter might encounter. Well, now there is, with The Knitting Answer Book . The expert authors, Margaret Radcliffe and Edie Eckman, leave no question unanswered, no quandry unaddressed. Each book contains detailed, illustrated answers to literally hundreds of questions, from the common to the more unusual:

• Are certain needles better for certain yarns?
• What if I dropped a stitch several rows back?
• Why do my edges tend to curl up?
• Can you use a different weight yarn than the pattern calls for?
• What can I do to keep my yarns from tangling up?
• Oops, I see my ribbing is way too tight. Now what?

Covering the whole range of situations a beginner is likely to face, along with the problems that may arise for those working more advanced patterns, this Answer Book will help knitters and crocheters of all levels. Each book is packaged in a small, take-along trim size, in a friendly-to-use Q&A format, and belongs in the bag of every knitter. Available 24/7, The Knitting Answer Book is always open, ready for yarn lovers to browse and consult to their heart’s content.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Every time I start a new knitting project, I have to get my neighbor to help me cast on the first row. Now I will be able to do it myself because this book has clear instructions for several methods to use. The drawings show exactly what to do by using a contrasting color of yarn so that the stitch and hand/needle position is clear. The table of contents lists chapters that cover the basics, right up to finishing a project. There are sections with resources on the Internet, as well as a bibliography including magazines and books. The index is extensive and extremely helpful. While the book is intended for people who know how to knit but want to "knit better" and feel more confident, the author includes enough information for beginners to feel comfortable. The "Tools" chapter is filled with information about the different types of needles and other items that can make knitting easier and more enjoyable. Abbreviations, sizing charts, knitting terms, pattern vocabulary, and lots more detailed information make this an excellent resource for those who love to knit or are eager to get started. 2005, Storey, Ages 13 up.
—Sheilah Egan
Library Journal
Written by well-known teachers in their fields and formatted as a series of questions that might be asked by crocheters or knitters, these manuals cover materials, techniques, and resources for each craft. They include not only valuable information for the beginner but also answers to questions that even experienced crocheters or knitters may never have seen addressed in print. For example, many books cover the casting-on process in knitting, but Radcliffe answers such specific queries as "What is the best cast-on when you're planning to add fringe to a piece?" and "Is there a more durable cast-on I can use for children's clothes?" In the crochet manual, Eckman includes exceptionally clear explanations for how to count stitches and rows from either side of a crocheted piece. Both books have excellent resource sections that include bibliographies, glossaries, and lists of abbreviations used in pattern books; at these prices, they are ideal for public libraries. The Knitting Answer Book

Typically I do not care for the Q&A format in a resource book but this book is excellent. Great resource for beginners and experienced knitters alike! I have given it as a gift to several friends.

Excellent Book - Full of great instructions & easy to understand

This is my absolute Go To book whenever I have a knitting question. I find that everything is explained in the easiest way to understand and it beats all other sources that provide knitting help.

Highly recommended whether you are a beginner or been knitting for years.

Really good! Very informative and useful. I learned better ways to do some things that I had been doing for years. It's never far away from my knitting.

    A handy little guide

Looking for the best cast on to use with lace? Want to know how to make a buttonhole? Seeking guidance on standard body measurements so you can make a pullover for your sister's two year old daughter -- that will fit? This pocketbook-sized (it's a little too fat for a pocket) is chock full of useful knitting guidance. It's easy to read and contains helpful illustrations - a good stocking stuffer, whether in Nook or hard copy for your favorite knitter.

Great book to carry in your knitting bag

Although I am an experienced knitter, I found this book helpful. For example, there are many types of cast-ons for different projects. It will be a great reference book that is small enough to fit in my knit bag to have with me at all times.

Excellent for beginners and those who have knitted for years. A Good Reference book for everyone who knits or wants to learn!

The following books are also good for beginners and for those who need to have a guide to refresh their skills.

    Good source for new knitters

I am not a new knitter but I am self taught and still have a lot to learn. I was hoping this book would address why I can get the body right but my sleeves are always too tight and why I can't ever get the pieces sewn together and have them look right. This book dealt with basic issues like dropped stitches. I needed more than that and this book didn't cover it.

    Handy Reference

Well organized and thorough reference for self-motivated knitters. I'm a beginner and learned a lot about how to think about or visualize my knitting from the diagrams and explanations.
