Overview

They were the young ones, the bright ones, the ones with the dreams. From the Nazi-prowled wastes of North Africa to the bloody corridors of Europe, they answered the call gladly. It was their duty, their job, their life. They marched off as boys, and they came back—those who made it—as soldiers and professionals forged in the heat of battle...

Meet the Author

W. E. B. Griffin
W. E. B. Griffin
Fellow bestselling author Tom Clancy is right on target when he describes W.E.B. Griffin -- world renowned for his military and police novels filled with vivid detail and dead-on accuracy -- as "a storyteller in the grand tradition, probably the best man around for describing the military community."

Biography

With more than 40 million books in print in more than 10 languages, bestselling novelist W.E.B. Griffin enjoys a well-deserved reputation as a master of the military thriller.

Griffin began his career not as a writer but as a military man like the type he would eventually make millions writing about. After growing up in both New York City and the Philadelphia suburb of Wallingford, Pennsylvania, Griffin took the step in 1946 that -- little did he know at the time -- would set the course for his literary life: He enlisted in the United States Army. After finishing basic training, he went through counterintelligence instruction at Fort Holabird, New Jersey, and was assigned to the Army of Occupation in Germany under Major General I. D. White, commander of the U.S. Constabulary.

In 1951, while attending Philips University, in Marburg an der Lahn, in Germany, Griffin was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. He again served under General White, both at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and in Korea, where he earned the Expert Combat Infantry Badge and served as a combat correspondent and as acting X Corps (Group) information officer. Upon his release from active duty in 1953, Griffin was appointed chief of the Publications Division of the Army Signal Aviation Test & Support Activity at the Army Aviation Center, Fort Rucker, Alabama.

Although he first wrote under various pen names, Griffin didn't begin writing his bestselling string of military novels until he was well into his 50s. His first Brotherhood of War novel, The Lieutenants, was published in 1982 and touched off Griffin's well-known reputation for writing with historical accuracy and fascinating detail. Publishers Weekly noted that this first novel "captures the rhythms of WW II army life... in an absorbing account of life among military men." Griffin would go on to pen additional books in the Brotherhood of War sequence and to launch other bestselling series -- including The Corps, Badge of Honor, Honor Bound, and Men at War, among others.

While Griffin's public persona is a bit of an enigma -- he's not one to make the talk show rounds -- it's clear that he both knows and appreciates his readers, especially his fellow military men. On his official web site, Griffin reflects, "Nothing honors me more than a serviceman, veteran, or cop telling me how much he enjoys reading my books."

Good To Know

Griffin was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Military Fiction from Norwich University.

He was vested in the Order of St. George by the U.S. Armor Association.

Griffin addressed the Corps of Cadets for the United States Military Academy.

    I Also Recommend:

    This is a great read

I f you read this book and enjoy it half as much as I did, you will buy the whole series immediately. The characters are well crafted, and bring you into the story that they are living. They are patriotic men and women that live up to our ideals of what it is to be an American. The research that the author uses is accurate and you might learn some things that you weren't aware of before sitting down. I heartily recommend this book for a fun, and exciting time.

    a great military saga!

The Brotherhood of War Series is an excellent epic of Army life from World War II to Vietnam. not only is there interesting characters with different backgrounds and ambitions, there is a very informative storyline that shows the development of the Green Berets and the helicopter. Book 6 in the series, The Generals, is chronologically the last book in the series and reveals the fates of Lowell, Felter, MacMillan, Parker, and the other soldiers. Books 7, 8, and 9 are stories involving previous incidents in the 60s.

    One of my favorites!!!

Reading this book took me into the lives of the characters W.E.B. Griffin created. I could not stop reading this book a long with all of it's sequels. The character development from young men into experienced soldiers takes you on a journey you will not soon forget.

    Highly recommended

This is tyhe second time that I am reading this series. WEB Griffin has a knack for making you feel as though you are there! It is especially good if you have any military background. The series beginning with "The Lieutenants follows the careere of several people. It's toughn to put this book or the following books down.

My First Military Related Book-WEB is a Master of Military

I bought this book a while ago and I'm so happy that I did. Although I'm not in the military myself YET, this book seems to give me new insight and thoughts about the military and the men in it. Your detailed and expressive stories in this book are excellent, and highly interesting. I will continue to purchase the complete series. I trust that all of your books have the same passion and creativeness as The Lieutenants does. I can't wait to join the military sometime soon after I get my degree, and continue reading these amazing books of yours. This is a great author!

WEB has the best grasp of army life and politics

Griffin, thanks for publishing your older works in nookbook format. This is the 7th time I have read this series from "the Lieutenants all the way thru the series and my eyes are getting to told for paperback books. My family has several career army types. the reason this series appeals to me is one of them was
"Patton's fair hair boy in WWII, winning the silver star, DSC,
3 of his 7 Purple Hearts prior to and during the "Buldge"
Griffin shows both the logistical and personal sides of the ugly thing called WAR. One of his best series- I have and have read all of this books.

    Historical fiction at it's best!

I'm not sure how many times I've read his books but W.E.B. Griffin absolutely KNOWS how to write an engaging story and how to keep his reader riveted.

    Good kids book

I read this book when I was in school and my son who's in the third grade just finished it. The book is an adult theme but there is no sexuality in it and my son loved it. He can't wait to read the Captains.

    Excellent War Novel

It was a well documented experience of World War II. It displayed every aspect of the closing years of the war.
