Miss Priscilla Stanley is doomed. She’s the unluckiest woman ever born. If something good happens to her, she knows that if she waits long enough, something bad will come of it. She’s very pretty with alluring curves, but she counts these blessings as curses, because they attract all the wrong kind of men. She isn’t penniless; as soon as she marries, she’ll receive a two thousand pound annuity left to her by her parents, but without a husband this fortune is frozen. Penniless, she’s forced to live with her aunt and uncle, who view her as a harbinger of ill fortune. They hope to be rid of her before their house burns down or they die in a horrid accident. Unbeknown to Priscilla, her uncle has agreed to pay her cousin Donald five thousand pounds if he can find a man to marry her and take her away. Priscilla has had many offers of marriage, but as ill-luck would have it none of them took her to the altar. Fate appears to be nothing more than a heartless fiend who finds great pleasure in poking Priscilla with a stick, but when the Earl of Warenne comes to pay his addresses something strange starts to happen. Has she been the unluckiest woman in the world, or the luckiest?

Meet the Author

I’m an American married to an adorable English Goblin who makes me laugh every day. I have a degree in fashion design (which I plan to use one of these days). I love learning new things. I love the weird and the bizarre. I love studying history by studying individuals - King John is one of my current favorite subjects. I love clipped box hedges (they smell divine), the colour orange (and wearing it even if it does make me look like a pumpkin), France, the French, French (which I speak badly), real romances, chairs (my family is genetically inclined to collect chairs), old coins, old beautiful junk, real ghost stories and I LOVE hearing people talk about their relationships and reading regency romances.

My genre: Regency romances (historical romances set in late Georgian England)

Rated: PG13 (PG13 as in 1985)

Similar to: The closest Regency authors would probably be Barbara Metzger and Marion Chesney.

Style: Tragi-comedy. I've been told by readers that my stories often make them laugh and cry.

Happy Reading!

Cari Hislop

A nice book to read and have a good laugh.

I thought this was a different type of romance. The hero was not a warrior, He was just a young man who was a little excentric. That is what made this book a nice love story.I don't always have to have a steamy sex in a book to make it a nice to read. The other books have an nice excentric loving father, why not a hero.

    Romantic hijunks

I howled in laughter at the antics of the male and female leads in this books. Really it appears to be more real than a majority of romance novels out there with the perfect alpha male. The book occasionally flounded with siiliness but it was a fun afternoon read

    Refreshing! Read It

I get so tired of "heaving bosoms" and "strapping muscles"; this book is about an attractive old maid who is the unwitting butt of a cruel wager.
The hero is not a pansy, but someone who has always been lucky and never had to deal with unforseen trials.
This book is a what all love stories should strive for: humor, overcoming obstacles, a sympathetic villain and true love eventually prevailing.

    Loved it

I thought the heroines were refreshing and more realistic. Edmunds OCD and Priscilla's insecurities made them, in my opinion, an ideal match. And even though the Duke was a cad you kind of end up feeling sorry for him. Most romances are predictable. Of course they are. That's why we love them. We want to root for the under dog. We want true love to win over all. Thanks for sharing.

    Lovely

Its a very sweet (and chaste) story, I would recommmend it to pass a lazy afternoon. For free you cant beat it, but having read romance of all kinds for so long I found it wanting a little heat! ;)

    Very predictable. A quick read.

Held my interest to finish reading. I read it a while back but I still remember the plot and the characters.

    Ok but not great

I'd hate to think that in real life, the Lords & other "gentlemen" would have their way with the wenches and force a woman to marry, without love. The villain is that way. Even the good guy didn't have 2nd thoughts of prior sexual encounters with whomever would "warn his bed."

Strange story but it was free.

    Dumb, dumb, dumb

Don't waste your time with this book. Glad it was a freebie. Only reason I didn't give it one star is I reserve those for the ones that are so bad I erase them totally!!! Story was boring, characters were very improbable and ending was horrendous.

    Good read

The story was a good read but I found the author made Edmund into too much of a wuss.

    Recommended for a quick read

This book was thankfully free. While the story was good and I enjoyed it, I never really connected with Lucky. He's kind of arrogant, but naive at the same time and this discrepancy didn't work for me. By arrogant I mean he never seemed to think that anything could ever go wrong for him and everyone else was always at fault.

    Not a hero...more like a pansy

I am an avid romance reader and there are few books that I struggle to finish but this book was definitely one of them. The "hero" is anything but. The entire time I spent reading this book I was looking for that elusive quality that makes you fall in love with the character. It never came, in the end all the hero was was a pathetic pansy that I just felt sorry for. I also felt sorry for the heroine for having to be stuck with him!

    Good, quick read

Nice historical romance. I just wish the male main character wasn't such a pansy. He really needed to stop blubbering so much. Overall, good book for a rainy day.
