Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
A long time ago during the Ice Age, there lived two woolly mammoth siblings named Oscar and Arabella. When it came time to attend school, Arabella was delighted; Oscar would have preferred not to go. While trying to find his way around the school, Oscar discovers some "MYSTERIOUS TRACKS" with bits of orange peel here and there. The tracks lead him to the kitchen. When it is assumed that Oscar stole the oranges, he sets out to find the real thief. His investigation ends with Oscar in danger from the humans. Quick wits, a smelly friend, and an invention all help him escape. This simple mystery has touches of humor and even a couple jokes that are perfectly aimed at the six- to nine-year-old crowd. Maps and loosely-drawn ink drawings of the characters take up quite a bit of space on each page. Early chapter book readers will appreciate both the limited amount of text on each page and the humor and mystery of the story. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo
Kirkus Reviews
Scribbly illustrations dominating nearly every spread, Layton's latest plunks fledgling readers down amidst a student body of typical types who-atypically-happen to be mammoths, saber toothed tigers, ground sloths, cave bears and other early mammals. Unjustly blamed for stealing oranges from the pantry, woolly mammoth and indifferent student Oscar sets out to nail the real culprits: the nasty, brutish humans about whom the teachers have been warning everyone. As it turns out, those very humans are massing up in the snowy mountains for an attack on the Academy-but a wild careen down the mountainside aboard his newly invented skateboard scatters the invaders and restores Oscar's good name. The decision by Oscar's new friend Fox to go unwashed as long as possible leads to all sorts of stinky humor that fits right in to this second-tier series opener. (Fantasy. 8-10)
Booklist
Silly jokes, a swift-moving plot, and a dose of adventure combine to create a book with strong appeal for readers of beginning chapter books.
