Branley provides easy-to-grasp explanations of such phenomenon as waxing and waning, and the pictures by husband-and-wife team Ed and Barbara Emberley reinforce the concepts in a whimsical fashion that in no way detracts from the scientific nature of the book. Branley explains the waxing and waning of the moon and compares the length of a day on earth and on the moon. Each page has colorful explanatory illustrations. Simon's The Moon (Four Winds, 1984) is more detailed and has exceptional photographs, but Branley's brief-easy-to-read text and the Emberleys' diagrams make this book a welcome addition to science collections for young children or the picture book section. Meet the Author

Franklyn M. Branley was Astronomer Emeritus and former Chairman of the American Museum-Hayden Planetarium. In 1960, he originated the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science series. Dr. Branley was the author of over 150 science books for children.
