Overview

Sweethearts since high school, Karen and Greg Newhall have lived in Bayland, Massachusetts, all their lives. They trust each other. They know their neighbors. Bayland had been the perfect place to raise their adopted daughter, Jenny.

Then a young girl is found dead in the nearby woods, and everything changes. Thirteen-year-old Jenny fails to appear for the family's traditional Mother's Day lunch; Karen is frantic. And when Jenny's birth mother suddenly appears on their doorstep, both Karen and Greg are outraged. Jenny rushed to embrace the stranger and the peaceful world of the Newhalls starts to shatter, revealing cruel secrets that make Greg a prime suspect in a brutal murder...bitter secrets that make Karen doubt she knows the people closest to her...and dangerous secrets that make every member of the Newhall family the hunted prey of a ruthless killer.

The bestselling author of The Unforgiven and Stranger in the House pens a spine-tingling thriller. It all starts on Mother's Day. Karen Newhall's family is happy and secure--until her adopted daughter's biological mother arrives out of the blue, and shortly thereafter is found dead--turning Karen's idyllic life upside-down.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
All but two of the major characters in this murder mystery are women, yet the producer chose a male, David Stuart, as reader. Stuart doesn't have a wide enough range of voices to distinguish the multiple female characters with any degree of credibility. He is further hampered by the story itself, as there are the numerous gaps in logic one normally associates with abridgments. This is particularly obvious in the latter half of the book, where motivations and explanations seemed contrived. The recording seems unduly burdened by laborious scene-setting that distracts from the main story. This is due, in part, to the author's penchant for giving every minor character a subplot. Purchase only for demand.-Jodi L. Israel, Westwood, Mass.
