Editorial Reviews

Vijaya K. Patil
This book takes a comprehensive look at the challenges confronting patients with multiple sclerosis and their families. It helps them to learn more about the disease and to strike a balance between the interests and needs of both patients and their families. This book builds on the earlier publication Multiple Sclerosis and the Family. The purpose is to help families experiencing multiple sclerosis learn more about the disease and its attendant problems. Complex emotional and financial issues arise during the course of the disease, as do issues with regard to sexuality, intimacy, and life planning. The book aims at helping families learn more about strengthening their coping skills and dealing with the various issues in a positive, rewarding manner. These are worthy objectives and the book meets the editor's objectives. This book, according to the editor, is intended mainly for families dealing with multiple sclerosis. However, I feel that it is helpful for the healthcare professionals who come into contact with patients with multiple sclerosis as well. The table of contents is adequate, dealing with almost all important issues of multiple sclerosis which families experience. Overall, this book has good print, language, information about resources, and additional reading, and is bound to make a favorable impression on its readers. This book provides a good insight into the impact of multiple sclerosis on the families experiencing the disease. It helps families negotiate their way through the barriers created by the disease along economic, emotional, financial, psychological, and social fronts. The recommended strategies for family coping should be ofgreat help not only to families currently torn apart by the disease, but also to families coming to grips with the new "uninvited guest." This book is not only a good addition to the library, but also is an invaluable asset to the family coping with multiple sclerosis.
