Forced to live with her brother and the overbearing woman who will soon be his wife, Olivia Killion is determined to gain her independence by inheriting 80 acres in far off Michigan. Her father's will bequeathed the land to whichever of his offspring would put in a crop and stake a claim to it. As Olivia insists, "I'm sprung off him just as much as Avis or Tobey."
The problem: she's seventeen, female, and it's 1841.
She has a friend who would make a perfect partner for this endeavor. Mourning Free knows how to run a farm, having worked many years for local farmers. More importantly, Olivia has complete trust in him and no fear of a romantic entanglement developing between them. Mourning will put in the crop for her and she will then help him buy land of his own.
The problem: Mourning is Black, the orphaned son of runaway slaves, and reluctant to travel and work with a White girl. He especially fears the private agents from the south who patrol the free states, hunting fugitive slaves.
Olivia believes she and Mourning can make their partnership work and they set off together. All goes well, despite the drudgery of survival in an isolated log cabin. Incapable of acknowledging her feelings for Mourning, Olivia thinks her biggest problem is her unrequited romantic interest in their young, single neighbor. until she is betrayed and violated and her world falls apart.
Strong-willed, vulnerable, and compassionate, Olivia is a compelling protagonist on a journey to find a way to do the right thing in a world in which so much is wrong.

Meet the Author

Yael Politis (Jan Lewis) grew up in Dearborn, Michigan, not far from Olivia’s farm. She spent years researching the backdrop for Olivia’s story, enjoying the challenge of recreating daily life in another time and place. She based many of the details (including the story of how baby Mourning got his name) on letters and journals passed down through her family, over seven generations of lives lived in the American Midwest. She received a great deal of insight from her sister Martha, who lived in a modern log home, hunted her own land, and was as independent and stubborn as Olivia. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, Politis moved to Israel, where she has worked as an agricultural laborer, secretary, librarian, Administrative Systems Analyst, Hebrew-English translator, editor, English teacher, technical writer, and proposal writer.

I decided to read this book because I enjoy historical fiction. The author's writing makes you feel as if you are part of the story. The book got off to a great start and surprised me with a twist in the middle. However the last 100 pages seemed to drag a bit and the ending of course leaves you hanging...and very disappointed that the next two books in the series is only available on Amazon. Why are the books not available through B&N? If they were I would have purchased them.

Loved it. Hated it left you hanging and was not able to get book 2 on B&N.

Enjoyed this read, but found the trouble mid way thru, to be borderline not believable, and not having a complete ending and book 2 not available.....I'm not so happy.

Great read! I thought the ending was meaningful. She showed how important it is for women to be strong no matter what they encounter in life.

I loved every last minute of this book. It is the kind of story that takes you into it's pages and leads you into being there and losing yourself and everything around you goes away. There was no predictability which to me always takes away from the storey. It is thoroughly enthralling. It leaves a cliffhanger because it is the first of a 3 part series. Now I have a real need for the next one but nook doesn't seem to have it but I will hunt it down. Read it. You won't be disappointed.

Have to buy the next one to see what happens to the characters. Not going to happen. Depressing and dreary.

Spoiler alert: I was enjoying the book until a disturbing twist about 2/3 into the story. Had to skip to the end because I hoped it would end happy. No such luck.

This is no stuffy 1800's book! So well written and timeless. Really hard to put down. About relationships between people, loves - sometimes difficult, and problems with society views. Can't wait to read more from this author!

I rated this series overall based upon 3 of the books. Rated the series three stars because i liked the author's writing style and humor she injects off and on as well as the time period oof the initial book. Some parts though did seem to drag. I have read book 2...it is continuation of book 1's story and would recommend. However, book 3 jumps generations and doing that, i think the author took away alot of the charm of the story overall. I liked the time period the first two books were written in, but did not care for the "modern"setting of book 3...got bored half way through and therefore, didnt bother finishing.
