Overview

America faces a full-scale socioeconomic collapse—the stock market plummets, hyperinflation cripples commerce and the mounting crisis passes the tipping point. Practically overnight, the fragile chains of supply and high-technology infrastructure fall, and wholesale rioting and looting grip every major city.

As hordes of refugees and looters pour out of the cities, a small group of friends living in the Midwest desperately tries to make their way to a safe-haven ranch in northern Idaho. The journey requires all their skill and training since communication, commerce, transportation and law enforcement have all disappeared. Once at the ranch, the group fends off vicious attacks from outsiders and then looks to join other groups that are trying to restore true Constitutional law to the country.

Patriots is a thrilling narrative depicting fictional characters using authentic survivalist techniques to endure the collapse of the American civilization. Reading this compelling, fast-paced novel could one day mean the difference between life and death.

    Horrible.

    All I can say is:

    DON'T WASTE YOUR BLOODY TIME!!!

Wow. That was one of those rare books that makes me feel less intelligent by the end. I am now dumber for having read that book.

It is sooo dis-jointed, it really feels like he was sitting around thinking up scenarios, and when he thought of one he liked, he'd jump up and write a chapter. There is almost no attempt made at making a cohesive story-line, it really just boils down to a bunch of scenarios strung together; they are all sort of interchangable up until 3/4 of the way through the book.

In the last quarter of the book, we finally begin to see a plot line, but then it is largely abandoned, forsaken as just an excuse to introduce more unrelated scenarios, this time focused largely upon guerilla warfare.

There are also a number of timeline glitches and contradictory elements. A woman winds up with a new-born who had just been on a raid the month before . . . huh? Not likely. There are suddenly three babies when it was only mentioned that one person was pregant. Early on, it is established that the country fell apart in the fall of '08 and the elections were post-poned and then never happened. But then several chapters later, Obama is blamed for his policies. I don't like the guy at all, but how did he get into office if not elected? Not by his "charm"!!!

The character development is largely non-existent. Almost all of the main male characters are interchangable, and after their introductions, most of the women are as well. It will be noticed early on that anyone who carries a Bible is going to be a good guy. Which leads me to my next gripe.

I am a Christian. Catholic, in fact, so if you believe the Pope (which is happening a lot less with ol' Benny than with JPII), the only "real" Christian. I've read the Bible, front to back, several times. I've read different versions of the Bible. My wife teaches high school religion at a Catholic school, and I often help her in preparing classroom discussions. I've spent most of my life in Catholic schools, I've researched a lot of different religions, spent time with all sorts of different faiths (Protestants, Baptists, Lutherans, Jews, Russian Orthodox, Greek Orthodox, Wiccans, Buddhists, even a bunch of Witness nutjobs.) so please believe that I love studying religion and it's effects upon people. But, holy crap!!! Every time someone sneezes or stubs a toe in this book, "Oh, you have survived stubbing your toe! Let's all pray and recite Psalms!" It gets more than a little tiresome. As I said earlier, it is made pretty clear early on in the book, that if you carry a Bible and have accepted the Lord, Jesus Christ, as your personal saviour . . . you must be a good guy. "Oh, you just wandered into our compound? We don't trust you . . . oh, you have a Bible? Praise! C'mon in! You MUST a good person!"

Now, it must be said that there is a lot of good information in this book. Just not a good story. There is actually an index in the back of the book to direct you to where in the book various things are discussed, which makes it a fine reference book. But it is valuable only as that.

I regret not just buying Rawles' how-to book, as he obviously knows what he is talking about; the subject matter is very solid. Unfortunately, he does not excel at turning facts and knowledge into a good story.

Bottom line Skip the novel, buy the how-to book.

Intriguing look ahead at the possible not too distant future.

This is an excellent effort from a first time author. Realism rules the day in terms of all the technical and practical terminology, but sometimes gets a little overboard with detail. Rather than a tightly wound dramatic novel, it occasionally veers off into a survival manual. None the less, it does present a chilling vision of what could be in America, and even for the most optimistic, gives you pause and makes you think, "wow, what if something like that really happens?". What would I do? Worthwhile for anyone who pays more attention to American Idol and Dancing With the Stars than what's going on in the world around them.

The author points out a very possible future.

If you are a progressive, anti gun,and or a conservative poser then you would not like this book and will find a small detail/details to obsess over. But if you belive in freedom and the bill rights then you will enjoy this story about a very possible future.

    Excellent Read, Well worth it.

Although the writing style didn't always grab me, it was very well written on a subject that could very well come to pass. If you can't experience something by living it, then you should read about it in order to get some insight of the experience. Since this is written as a novel, I feel better prepared and have made some changes myself because of this book.

I LOVED IT and am recommending it to anyone who will listen.

    Great Book...

Patriots is a great book! I'll keep it in my library to use as a guide for the day it may be needed. Realistic to the point of nightmares! When I was on the second chapter, I purchased 3 more books for my brothers to read and comment on. I'll keep mine on my shelf next to my copies of the FoxFire books and my Boy Scout manual.

This Book & Story could come from the near future

I enjoyed and learned from this book. I don't agree with the ending. But it wasn't too bad. With the Current, govt socialist/new world order, types in power we can expect a continual struggle for our rights & freedoms. o'
& his kind, has already tried to take our guns. If they succeed, we will not only be unarmed, unable to protect our families from looters & thugs, but will not be able to resist Tyranny.

    Everyone should be better prepared!

Everyone, especially our politicians, should read Patriots. Too many Americans are not even prepared to spend a day without electricity let alone the many natural and man made challenges that could happen.

The story of survival is fantastic.

Boo to those who slammed the writer's style. He is a first time writer and had a different style than others. Sure there are a couple of places that might have errors to the "A" types but it is about the story. As readers we should embrace different writing styles. To those critics I simply say "get over yourself".

Read this book. Be American and make sure something like this won't happen to these United States. Open your eyes and be more prepared after reading Patriots. This is a well though out story and I only wish it was imaginative but unfortunately it is an all too real possibility.

I thought Patriots was great! I will be more prepared by reading this and am dedicated to preparing myself better and getting more engaged in the political process to avoid such a possibility.

    Responsible Gun Owners in America

This is a compelling story out of today's headlines and tied to a worst case outcome of current events. It paints a picture of what responsible gun owners, patriots, and militia represent in America. You will find yourself rooting for the good guys.

Quite boring. Poorly written. A waste of time and money.

This book was a waste of my time and money. It is poorly written and the author's style leaves much to be desired. I put it in the "donate" box the day after I received it.

A scary look at what could happen

This book was an excellent read. I sped through it in about 2 days, I just couldn't put it down. The first few chapters are disturbing and creepy. It shows what could happen if America collapses after the economy takes a serious turn for the worst. The economic situation that is going on today makes it even more disturbing. The book is also filled with tips and tactics on how to survive an end of the world secnario, i found myself highliting and book marking certain pages like the earlier review.
I highly recommend reading this book.......just in case.

    Very much enjoyed this book

I enjoyed this book a great deal; however, it was so much better than just reading a good piece of fiction. There was the added bonus of starting to really think about what things could come to given our country's current state of affairs. I found it to be thought provoking and learned many useful things about off the grid living. Thanks for a great read!

    A must read

A great book, full of detail & very accurate realistic scenarios based on the authors detailed study and preparations for this fiction novel.
This novel depicts life changing events happening now & that are extremely likely to happen full blown in the very near future making it a must read novel. American readers can also learn from the experiences and hardships related in this book to benefit their own lives & plans, as although a novel, it incorporates true facts & current info thruout.
The reader will come away with a sense of purpose and practical ideas on how to plan their future strategy to protect themselves and their families while being entertained by the books fascinating story.

One Of The Best! Highly Recomended!

I must say that I'm very happy that I discovered this book. As I do with most books, I quickly tried to read it cover to cover scanning only the important parts. But I soon found out that it was ALL important, and interesting. I have since reread it several times...taking notes as I go. My original copy got so dog eared from being read by my sons and being loaned out, that I had to buy a second copy. (Now I am in the process of getting an autographed copy, to have hardbound.) Everyone I know, that has read this book, has loved it. BTW, I know enough about economics for the first chapter to keep me up in a fitful sleep after reading it. True, this book describes a "worst case" scenario, but that first chapter was a little unnerving. This book will help you hope for the best....and prepare for the worst.

A blurry, olive-drab vision of the future

In this fantasy, government at all levels suddenly disappears in the face of a hyperinflation. Police forces and fire departments cease to exist; mass desertions erase the military.

People are starving in the cities, while mountains of grain sit in bins in the midwest. But these starving ones manage to find weapons and fight pitched battles in the streets, through which the characters must escape.

It's hard to understand the author's fascination with automatic weapons and infantry tactics, until the plot advances. Then we find that the UN, acting as a front for some unnamed group of nations, has invaded the former US and is "pacifying" it by fighting small groups of survivalist-insurgents. Its European soldiers are bestial types, smoking hashish and gang-raping what local teenagers they can find.

The real-world UN has supplied forces for many observation and peacekeeping missions- never "pacification." There's a large plaque in UN headquarters in New York filled with the names of those killed in these efforts, including the crew of an observation post blown away by an Israeli rocket during the last invasion of Lebanon.

This story is realistic in only one respect: the extreme difficulty of creating a self-sufficient haven, cut off from civilization. The medical aspects are the most frightening: multi-dosing with expired antibiotics, totally natural childbirth, surgery in the woods with an IV bag tacked to a tree.

The logistics alone should provoke many second thoughts for anyone dreaming of off-the-grid self-sufficiency.

    Patriots...It Could Happen Here

    Patriots
    Surviving The Coming Collapse
    By: James Wesley, Rawles
    Reviewed by: Josh Haney
There are very few instances in the history of fiction where within a little over a decade, the things you have written about come to pass with an almost eerie similarity. Lots of writers have been at the forefront of "predicting" things to come; Isaac Asimov, HG Wells, but this was mostly science fiction. What I present here could be called science fact-ion, because Mr. Rawles has got his finger on the pulse of exactly what is/has been going on in the world for years now, and by reading between the lines, how to protect yourself when the rest of the prediction comes to pass.
I stumbled upon this novel after visiting a website run by the author called Survival Blog. Touted as 'the internets most popular daily blog on survival and preparedness topics', this was definitely my kind of site, with a wealth of accumulated knowledge that must be seen to be believed. A link led me to his homepage, which had a film script version of the novel available to read. I devoured that and was hooked.I had to read the book. The first thing I found out is that this book had been in the works for quite some time, under a few different names, and also available as freeware in it's infancy. And why was this man so dedicated to keeping his novel alive, throughout so many different incarnations, that's simple, he wanted to instruct the common man that anyone, no matter how untrained can prepare and survive a major socio/economic upheaval. Rawles has poured his years of military service and preparedness training into an easy to connect with adventure novel, that is, quite simply, a how to manual for those unfamiliar with this type of subject matter.
The tale begins with hyperinflation, gas prices skyrocketing, and panic spreading as the economy of the United States begins to crumble under these stresses (all of these things could easily be ripped straight from the headlines of your local newspaper). Varied groups of Patriots have been readying themselves for this over the years.Todd and Mary Gray, along with several of their college friends, have set up a compound in the hills of central Idaho; the brothers Keane, as they hope to meet up with their family in eastern Washington. As the saga progresses we hear about other locales as refugees begin to turn up, some looking for food while others are looking to loot. Rather quickly the collapse begins to spread across the globe, as no one is safe from the fallout of the breakdown of the U.S., who has pretty much controlled the world economy for the better part of 75 years.
But, convinced they can make it right and fix everything, a Provisional Federal Government is established by the United States and the United Nations. Their only goal, however, is to take back what was once theirs, and attempt reinstitution of a system that was flawed and has already proven that it's likely to fail again. So, it's up to the patriots, now unified with other groups into militias (much like the start of this great land), to protect what's rightfully theirs.
As I mentioned above, the story is ultimately used to disguise the tactical nature of this instruction booklet. You learn about everything from solar power to firearms, food storage to building a survival retreat. Anything a novice to the mindset needs to know to get started can be found within the pages of this paperback and it's story of modern

The publisher touts this as part novel, part survivalist handbook and that's just what it is.

As the novel part of this book unfolds we have a group of friends who met in college, meeting up at a compound in Idaho after a world wide financial collapse. Having foreseen this or a similar disaster looming for years this group has planned and built a defendable compound for their survival. We learn about the group, their ideals and their goals while throughout we are given details of their guns, of which there are many, their equipment and what it takes to have the chance of survival. We learn what is important, what isn't and what the shortfalls were made in their planning. This is so much more than just a novel but it's still a fun and entertaining read.

Interesting book about a group of friends who had planned a survival retreat compound during a complete collapse of our system. I enjoyed his characters and their back stories although there are quite a few of them and it gets a little confusing at times.
The author also gets very technical and detailed, which I tend to enjoy, but others may find it a bit overkill.
I did like the plot of the story and the drama involved. All in all, an enjoyable read.
