Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Expressive bugs doing buggy things lead you on their daily rounds. The illustrations depict their daily activities such as floating, crawling, sipping and chewing. The bugs' engaging and somewhat goofy faces keep you in the story. But you soon realize more is going on here. A colored border above and below the pictures depict a pattern. The fun is in hunting for matching patterns less evident in the picture. How many can you find? Some are pretty subtle. This pattern is also reinforced in the text with patterns that are heard, not seen. For example, the simplest pattern has two parts and is called an AB pattern. This is seen in the text as "flutter-float, flutter-float." In the border it is represented by alternating orange and yellow blocks. The illustrated butterflies reinforce the AB pattern with a repeating pattern of large dot, small dot in their wings. As you continue to look at the picture you see the AB pattern is everywhere. Turn the pages and the patterns become more complex and interesting. The author is a parent and a teacher who wrote this book to use in her classroom. Her point is that patterns are all around us and this surely is an engaging way to bring awareness of patterns to children. 2001, The Millbrook Press, $21.90. Ages 3 to 7. Reviewer: Barbara Kennedy

K-Gr 4-Here is an intelligent math tool that can be used by an individual child or with groups. Each section of the book consists of a repetitious rhyme about a bug on a two-page spread full of bright pastels and friendly dark colors, followed by a second spread that shows a close-up of the insect and the last word of the poem in heavy, large letters. By using the sounds in the poems, the details of the pictures, and the various blocks of color that frame the initial spread, children can find and identify repetitive patterns. The author's note states that, "Each picture contains six patterns that match that picture's border." Unfortunately, notes about the book's intended use and an explanation of an AAB pattern appear on the last page, and some readers, including adults, may have no idea what to make of it all until they finish flipping through the pages. The concepts will undoubtedly have to be explained and demonstrated to the youngest readers, but even some third and fourth graders will take joy in trying to "figure out" the book and play the game-once they know what they're supposed to do. An excellent way to prove to reluctant readers that books can be lots of fun.-Thomas Pitchford, Rosenthal Elementary, Alexandria, LA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

    Great Book!

Love the book! Great way to teach patterns. My son enjoys searching the pictures to find the pattern in as many places as he can (the bug's wings, trees, etc). The words are also in a fun rhyming patttern that matches the pattern being illustrated for that page.
