Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Michael Jung
Amanda is a nine-year-old girl who has just gotten her first pet, a cute little ferret named Peach. Every day, Amanda takes good care of Peach. She feeding her pet, cuddles her, and lets her play with toys—at least that's the story from Amanda's point of view. From Peach's perspective, Amanda's hand is the Handra, a five-headed serpent that abducted Peach from the kingdom she ruled as a ferret princess. Every day, Peach yearns for freedom, even as she is forced to compete in gladiator-style tournaments against giant Barbie dolls and savage teddy bears. Will Peach be able to understand that Amanda means her no harm? And can Amanda learn that ferret princesses need to be treated with more respect? Classic pet stories meet Spartacus in this graphic novel, which manages to get its readers to sympathize with both protagonists, even as they hurt each other. Artists Lindsay Cibos and Jared Hodges create two very different worlds, from Amanda's everyday home life to Peach's humorously terrifying world where a pet cage can become a dungeon and a chew toy can transform into a formidable enemy. This is a definite winner that will encourage readers to view life from multiple perspectives. Reviewer: Michael Jung
