Gideon...any woman would enjoy being persued by this rake!!!

A rake with primitive instincts that senses beauty among the plainest of Janes. Anne Gracie's characters are entertaining. Gideon and Prudence command impressive salaries as actors, I'm sure...if they were real. Starting at page one 'The perfect rake' guides you through a spectrum of behaviors: from dark human foibles to light heart stopping, loving traits. Grab hold because the novel plays on your emotions like a favorite melody plays on the soul. This rich fast pace book takes you on excursions throughtout the Continent with a destination calling for a permanent door knocker. Finally, just when you think you've solved the plots a new twist evolves. In 1806, Norfolk, England, orphans Prudence Merridew and her sisters are sent to reside with their tyrant, undermining grandpapa. Ten years later, Prudence tired and emotionally scarred devises a plan of escape. While on the run she's bewitched by the most amiable rake, Lord Gideon Carradice. This whirlwind romance is a keeper. Don't fret when you reach 'the end' the sisters have their own narrations.

    A reviewer

It¿s been a while since I¿ve read anything as good as this. I love the characters that Ms. Gracie created. How their characteristics slowly change and how they shine in their own way. This book is a mix of romantic comedy and drama. Ms. Gracie manages to balance both aspects beautifully in this story. What I loved most was how Gideon was slowly pursuing Prudence, taking his time because he knew how wary she was when it came to rakes. He took his time courting her, comforting her and loving her. Ah, but he is a rake! Of course he does some shameless flirting that I can't help but love him. As I look forward to reading about the rest of Prudence¿s sisters, the only disappointment I have is that she chose to write Charity¿s story in this same book.

    A near perfect sub-genre entry

In 1816, Lord Dereham uses a riding whip in a rage on his seventeen years old granddaughter Faith in the locked attic. Nineteen years old sister Charity sends Faith¿s twin Hope to get the oldest sibling Prudence to intercede with their abusive grandfather. Charity has welts on her face and Hope on her wrists as both tried to intervene. Pru frees Faith and tells him in eight weeks she will be twenty-one and the guardian of her siblings; they will leave even without a cent. When he hurts himself in a fall while angrily running after Pru, she takes her sisters to the home of their Uncle Oswald where she hopes to find them husbands...................... Oswald takes in his battered nieces, but insists Pru marry first. She informs him that she is engaged to recluse Edward, a duke. Pru goes to see Edward to enlist his help, but his rakish cousin Gideon Carradice intercepts her. She thinks he is Edward while he knows she is his beloved and wants her as his wife though his withdrawn cousin seeks a spouse too.................... As expected, Anne Gracie provides a wonderful Regency romance that through her ensemble of secondary cast brings to life the era especially the rights of male guardians to abuse and use their female wards. Pru is a courageous person standing up to her violent vile grandfather who blames his late daughter-in-law for her Jezebel ways that killed his son in sin. He takes his feelings outon their children. Fans will appreciate Gideon¿s efforts to prove to his beloved that he is the man for her, but first must overcome his own duplicity. THE PERFECT RAKE is a near perfect sub-genre entry................... Harriet Klausner

    I Also Recommend:

A whirlwind of pleasurable and fun reading.

This was my first Anne Gracie novel and I was so wonderfully surprised to find such a talented writer.

This book was so much fun and heartwarming. The characters came alive and found their own place in your heart. Gideon was the dream for every
reader. The plot was fast paced, but flowed beautifully. I could not name one fault with this book, each character was the perfect spice to this fun mix. As an avid reader, thank you, Ms. Gracie.

One of the BEST! That I have read in a long time.

I happened to find this novel while browsing at Barnes. It is, without a doubt, one of the best books I read in 2005. The characters are just wonderful. So full of life that you feel as if they are real and you're watching a movie. I cannot wait for the other novels regarding the sisters to come out.

    2.5 stars

After being orphaned, the Merridew sisters are taken in by their cruel grandfather, a man driven insane by bitterness and prone to taking his rage out on them violently. At their first chance, the girls escape to their great uncle Oswald's home. From there, they hope to debut in society and pin all their hopes for a good life on Charity, whose beauty is the greatest of these sisters' assets they believe. Unfortunately, she is not the eldest, and it is their uncle's intention that Prue, the oldest and plainest of them come out first. In order to help Charity, Prue invents a fictional engagement to an equally fictional man, she thinks. However, her fiancee is real. However, it is not him she finds herself committed to marry, but his rakish cousin, Lord Carradice, Gideon. For his part, Gideon is willing to join her play acting, but soon, myth becomes reality, and they are in love. ................... Unfortunately, the plot tends to ramble in what should be an intriguing read. There is simply too much going on to sort out properly.
