Imagine discovering a shiny, yellowish egg rolling onto the floor from a carpet purchased for your nursery. Four children discover the egg. The children are launched on many exotic adventures which ensue after the egg hatches. A phoenix emerges from the egg and leads the children to places they have only wondered about. Much to the delight of the children, the carpet is also magic. The carpet transports the children wherever they wish to go. But only three wishes per day are allotted. This is problematic. Sometimes the children find themselves stranded or provided items such as 199 Persian cats and a cow that were not exactly what they wished for. Then they cannot get rid of them because the wish quota has been met. The children, guided by the phoenix, help others throughout their adventures. They help their baby brother get over whooping cough and a family from being evicted from their castle. The adventures eventually wear out the magical Persian carpet. The children try darning the rug but to no avail. After rescuing the children from a burning theatre, the carpet is ceremoniously sent off with a new egg. Instructions sent by the phoenix are for the egg not to be hatched for two thousand years. Then the phoenix burns in the fragrant pyre built by the children. Readers must understand this book was written in 1904. Some descriptions of people living on remote islands are not acceptable anymore. In addition, female and male characters are stereotypical due to the period the book was written. Children who are fans of classic fantasy literature may enjoy this second book and others in the "Five Children" trilogy. Reviewer: Nancy Baumann

Meet the Author

Edith Nesbit (1858 – 1924), was a mischievous, tomboyish child who grew up to be an unconventional adult. She and her husband were founder members of the socialist Fabian Society and their home became a centre for socialist and literary discussion. Their friends included some of the time’s greatest writers and thinkers, including George Bernard Shaw and H. G. Wells.

Everything about Edith showed her as a woman trying to break out of the mould demanded by English society at the time – she expressed her individuality through her clothes, hairstyle, lifestyle and her habit of speaking forcefully on almost any subject. She lived her socialism and late in life her charitable deeds brought her close to bankrupcy.

E. Nesbit – she always used the plain initial for her writing and was sometimes thought to be a man – started to write for children after years of successful writing for adult magazines. She was asked to write about her childhood but instead of facts chose to describe her happy girlhood in fiction. The result was books still read today, firm bestsellers for decades. She was brilliant at combining real-life situations with elements of fantasy and humour. Films –such as The Railway Children - have kept her stories in the public eye and her magical fantasies, including Five Children and It, continue to delight each new generation of children.

    The book PHOENIX AND THE CARPET is written by Edith Nesbit. This book is about some kids who found a bird and the magic carpet. They travel different place on the magic carpet. They found buried treasuer. The name of the bird is Phoenix and it wakes up every 3 thousand years. The characters in this book are good and smart. They help each other in different ways. Each kids had different ideas about their wishes to the carpet. They ate anything and didn't care about their health.
