Overview

A Place to Call Home? by Lynda Smith is set in 1936, a time between the two world wars, but Jacob's story begins in 1905. He is a Russian Jewish immigrant whose parents and younger sister are desperate to escape the escalating danger of the Russian pogroms. They embark on a long, perilous sea journey and arrive in the northwest of England where, at the age of ten years, Jacob starts a new life in his adopted country. His ambition is to be a successful businessman, and he achieves that goal. His life becomes even more complicated when he falls in love with one of his female employees. They enter into an affair, resulting in the birth of a son, who is blissfully unaware that Jacob is his father.

Torn between his loyalty to his wife and daughters, his deeply embedded Jewish roots, and his mistress and his son, Jacob is in constant turmoil about what to do so as to cause the least amount of hurt and pain to all the people he holds dear.

The story takes into account the horror of the Great War, in which Jacob enlisted as a boy solider in 1916.

Threaded throughout this story are the themes of socio-economic disparity, religious bigotry, ignorance, and anti-Semitism.

A beautifully crafted story with very realistic, well-defined characters and events. At times raw with emotion, but pure romance in the love and devotion between Claire and Roan. This story is so good that I immediately reread most of it to soak up any details I'd missed the first time through.

This book is genuine magic. I bought this book out of sheer curiosity and I¿m glad I did. I love this novel and I recommended it to anyone who loves romance. The love between Roan and Claire makes you believe in pure, innocent love straight from the heart. The characters come to life making you feel like your part of this amazing family. They seem so real that your heart breaks when theirs breaks, and it glows and blossoms when theirs blossoms. Simply Magic!

I have read quite a few books lately, and this one is by far the best out of all of them. I have never read a book before that has brought me to tears. It was just that moving. When I read the part when they seperated them, it broke my heart. And then all the events that follow... I recommend this book to everyone. Everybody should read this book.

I picked this book up at an airport bookstore. I wanted a long story to read while I was in Germany for work. This book from start to finish captivated me. I couldn't wait to get back to my hotel to read each afternoon. Having a step-mother that enjoys reading I purchase another copy for her. Very, very good story...

When I picked up this book, I had no idea what I was getting into! From the first page I was drawn into a big Southern family and all the drama that entails! The fun, romance, loyalty-issues and healing are all great in this wonderful Smith novel. I'm a true fan of hers!

I loved this book and was so sad when it was over because I wanted to keep reading about Claire and Roan. Their chemistry with one another and the depth of thier love for eachother is so amazing. It makes you want someone as caring as Roan by your side. I am Twenty one but would recomend this book to anyone from fifteen on up. It trully reaches your soul and lifts your spirit.

So far away from what I usually read but I couldn't put it down... A biography of immigrant family, a girl and a boy from the wrong side of the tracks... Claire grew up over a 20 year period and Roan had so much going against him... But, she was his "cheerleader" from the time she was five and he was 10... Although they were separated for many years and through many obstacles they found their HEA... BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN!! Early on I thought I would stop reading but the further I went the further I was drawn in... A beautiful albiet sad, love story of multiple generations all united in a small Georgia town...

I love the setting and how it's closer to home. Claire is a really good character who's just like me, waiting for a childhood friend to return and take you under his arms knowing he will. SOOO SWEET and the plot's def. well developed.~Little Mermaid
