Overview

From New York Times Bestselling Author Beverly Lewis

A Long-Forgotten Message Threatens a Community United in Secrecy

Rachel Yoder, a New Order Amish woman, lost her husband and son in a tragic accident two years ago. Now, returning to her aging parents with her young daughter, she has resigned herself to the life of a widow. With a subdued but cheerful heart she helps her family run a bed-and-breakfast in a quaint Lancaster county town.

Philip Bradley, a world-weary journalist from New York City on assignment in Lancaster to write an article on the Amish community, is a lodger at the Yoder's B&B. A chance discovery by Philip of a postcard written in illegible Pennsylvania Dutch in the dresser of his room sets off a series of events that leads him into the heart of the Amish life and to the bedside of a mysterious woman known as "The Storyteller." With the postcard as a link to a haunted past, the woman gradually weaves a riveting tale as old as herself about a community shuttered in secrecy, shattered by betrayal.

Fascinated by the story, Philip's and Rachel's lives become inevitably intertwined despite the attempts of the community to protect her from the outsider. Torn by devotion to the people she loves and the awakening feelings in her heart, Rachel searches her past to restore old wounds in order than new love might grow.

Editorial Reviews

Roberta Blair
Beverly Lewis weaves a story of the Plain People with beautiful shades of devout faithfulness and enduring family values, yet reveals darker underlying threads of intolerance, superstition and divination. A bittersweet novel readers will come back to again and again.

    A reviewer

I love all of the Beverly Lewis novels, but I have to say that this series wasn't as wonderful as the rest of her works are. I would recommend it only if you've read many other titles by Beverly Lewis. If you have not, then this is not the book to get you hooked on her masterpieces.

    Touching and Truthful

Rachel Yoder is actually Beachy Amish, not New Order, its mentioned several times in the book. I love this book and The Crossroad, its my two favorites of all that Beverly Lewis has written, it even helped me grow majorly in my prayer life. It is touching, holds so much truth about spiritual warfare and teaches patience when you have a problem and not to become "comfortable" with that problem, deal with it in the right way. Again, wonderful story all around, I highly reccomend it.

    Easy Read

A decent book, easy to read, kept your interest. Some of the Amish information presented contradicted Old Order Amish and that was just glazed over. Good for young adult readers. Would have liked it to be more realistic and revealing. Not quite believable for me.

    Great

I love all the Amish Beverly Lewis books. I got a lot of my friends into reading them. I am glad they ended up having them in my church library or I would have never read them

    Where's this story going?

I'm a big fan of Beverly Lewis novels but this book was some what dissapointing to me. The plot took forever to start going at a good pace. Almost until page 170. I also really don't like the mom's roll. She's really mean.
