Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
A patchwork coat becomes the center of attention in a small Appalachian schoolhouse when Minna, eight, silences the teasing of her classmates by sharing the stories behind each of the cloth pieces. A tender story of friendship and love with gentle watercolors that evoke the time, place and people.
School Library Journal
Gr 1-4-- Minna, a young Appalachian girl, wants very badly to attend school, but she doesn't have a coat. Her father has just died and her family cannot afford one. When a group of mothers who gather at her house regularly to make quilts hear of her predicament, they decide to help her. Minna is thrilled, but when the new coat is finished and she wears it to the one-room schoolhouse, she is teased by her classmates for wearing rags. Minna is hurt, but she eventually gains their interest when she explains that her coat is full of stories--their stories--for each scrap has come from one of their homes. The children are enthralled and sorry for their taunts. Mills's care and attention to details make her book as charming as her narrative. The paper is a cream color, and the watercolor palette is warm but faded to give an antique cast to the illustrations. The large, lovely paintings that bring the characters and period to life are balanced by text on the bottom half of the left-hand pages; the generous blank space is filled with small scraps of colorful cloth. The writing is lyrical; its heartwarming message emphasizes the value of a community and sharing. It might even inspire a class quilting project--and a chance to share more stories. --Judith Gloyer, Milwaukee Public Library

The Rag Coat by Lauren Mills

This book is about a little girl named Minna who comes from a poor family. She desperately wants to go to school, but it is not a possibility because she is needed at home to help her mother. Later her father promised she would go to school, but first she needed a coat for the bitter winters they had otherwise she would have to dropout half way into the school year. But her Papa dies from working in harsh conditions in the coal mines, so school seems to be a distant fate that may never come. Until one day the quilting mothers find out Minna can't go to school because she doesn't have a jacket, so they decide to intervene and help make a coat from their scraps of quilts they made previously. Minna is ecstatic about her new coat and can hardly stand the wait. Finally the new coat is ready. Minna wears it proudly to school, but she is quite unprepared for the reaction of her new classmates. What her schoolmates do not realize is that Minna is wearing a piece of something that once was or still is special to each and every person in her class. In the end Minna is may just teach her classmates a valuable lesson.

    This book is beautiful.

I was introduced to this book while in a reading education course at East Stroudsburg University. I have bought it as a gift many times. A beautiful story of a young girl with few material things and the cruelty of those who teased her, but Love prevails - a great story for both sexes that teaches values in a way almost any child (or adult!) can relate to. The illustrations are fantastic. Love it.
