Overview

From the author of Abhorsen comes classic fantasy set in a world dominated by the Ragwitch, a being of sinister, destructive intent.

Quiet, easygoing Paul never expected to be cast in the role of savior. But his strong-willed sister, Julia, has come under the thrall of the Ragwitch, and Paul himself is drawn not only into the creature's world but into a battle for Julia's very existence -- as well as his own.

When his sister Julia falls under the spell of the evil Ragwitch and her minions, Paul must journey across time to a distant dimension and rally the forces of good to rescue Julia and save the magical kingdom of Yendre.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Julia felt compelled to unwrap the strange, doll-like object, and as she did she became a captive of the Ragwitch. Paul, her mild mannered younger brother who always looked to his sister for leadership, is really torn. He knows that Julia needs his help, but does he have the courage to face the Ragwitch and her evil forces. It is a heart stopping good versus evil struggle with a variety of people and hideous creatures. One aspect that sets Garth's story above the rest is his multiple perspectives—the story as told through the eyes of Paul, the Ragwitch and Julia; and Julia's struggle to keep her own persona against a monstrous evil. Readers will race through this one and feel gratified at the end, but they will want to know more about many of the characters—a sequel seems to be in order. If you haven't already read the "Abhorsen" trilogy by the same author, it should be next on your list after reading this book. 2004 (orig. 1990), Eos/HarperCollins, Ages 12 up.

    A good fantasy

I really enjoyed this book! it kept you going and it is hard to put it down. However I think Harry Potter is better written and thought out. This was a very good book!

    An AMAZING fantasy novel.

A very well developed story with liveliness. There's a lot of activity with battles, witches, and spirits. Plus, the entire story is told from both of the main characters' perspectives, which is good because both of them go through a lot in the story. Anyone that is looking for a book with cover to cover action, pick up this book.

A book you will never 4get

This book is so amazing you will want to have all your friends read it just so you have some one to discuss it with. All the charactes in this book are so real you are able to feel their pain, glory, sorrow and bravery. 'Ragwitch' is a book you will want to buy so you can read it over and over again, you will never tire of this book. If you are tired of the no-so-realicst magic books then this is the book for you because everything is so real you some times wonder if you're really reading a fiction book!!! READ THIS BOOK YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!!

    It was good...

Well... I liked the book, but according to me Nix's other books are better. The book was a little strange, but heart warming. I'm glad I read it, but you really have to love Nix (which I do) overlook this one non-amazing book that he wrote.

    A recommended book!

I am a big fan of Garth Nix's books, as I have read everyone of his books except for the seventh tower series, and sir thursday, which just came out. I feal that this is his 2nd best book of his among the ones I have read. This is because he developes the charactors, and creates a twisted plot so you cant imagine what comes next! I wish garth nix could have written more novels before he wrote the keys to the kingdom series (mister monday-sir thursday) because his writing is much more complex and better before he started writting it. I hope hes not getting into kid books, because I would then loose intrust in him.
