Overview

The gripping finale to the New York Times bestselling Darkest Powers trilogy!

In the end, there's always a reckoning.

Chloe Saunders's life is not what you would call normal. First of all, she can't figure out how she feels about a certain antisocial werewolf or his charming brother—who just happens to be a sorcerer. Then there's the fact that she's running for her life from an evil corporation that's trying to kill her and her supernatural friends. And finally, she's a genetically altered necromancer who can raise the dead, rotting corpses and all, without even trying.

Not normal.

But Chloe has a plan. And the end is very near.

Editorial Reviews

Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA)
For THE SUMMONING“Suspenseful, well-written and engaging.”
Melanie Hundley
In the third book of The Darkest Powers series, Chloe, Derek, Simon, and Tori are still on the run from the Edison Group. The people that they've run to for help are afraid of the powers the four teens have. Ghosts are attacking Chloe, and a local werewolf pack is stalking Derek. Just when the four teens think things can't get any worse, they realize that at least one of the people who are supposed to be helping them has betrayed them to the Edison Group. Chloe, Derek, and Simon are still not sure that Tori is on their side, they don't know which adult is the betrayer, and they don't know how to escape the house in which they are currently trapped. Will this be the time the Edison Group catches them, or will they be able to bring the corporation down? Reviewer: Melanie Hundley
School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—Fifteen-year-old Chloe Saunders and her friends Tori, Simon, and Derek are genetically altered supernaturals on the run from the evil corporation that created them. Hiding out with a family friend, they are trying to make sense of their predicament and discover what sinister plans the Edison Group has in store for them. As a powerful necromancer who can raise the dead in her sleep, Chloe struggles to control her abilities and figure out how to best use them to keep everyone safe. To further complicate matters (as if running for your life were not enough), Chloe wrestles with her feelings for Simon, a good-natured sorcerer, and Derek, a misunderstood werewolf. This nail-biting climax to the series continues to captivate readers with its edge-of-one's-seat pacing. Armstrong's story is full of action, romance, deception, and intrigue as well as complex characters and serious teenage issues. A satisfying addition for fans of the supernatural.—Donna Rosenblum, Floral Park Memorial High School, NY

Kelley Armstrong
Kelley Armstrong

Kelley Armstrong is the bestselling author of the Other-world series; the first book in the Darkness Rising trilogy, The Gathering; and the New York Times bestselling Darkest Powers trilogy, which includes The Summoning, The Awakening, And The Reckoning.

Kelley's earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers' dismay. Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves while safely locked away in her basement writing-dungeon.

AFTER FOUR NIGHTS ON the run, I was finally safe, tucked into bed and enjoying the deep, dreamless sleep of the dead . . . until the dead decided they’d really rather have me awake. It started with a laugh that slid into my sleep and pulled me out of it. As I rose on my elbows, blinking and struggling to remember where I was, a whisper snaked around me, words indistinguishable.

I rubbed my eyes and yawned. Dull gray light shone through the curtains. The room was silent and still. No ghosts, thank God. I’d had enough in the last few weeks to last me a lifetime.

A scrape at the window made me jump. These days, every branch scratching the glass sounded like a zombie I’d raised from the dead, clawing to get in.

I went to the window and pulled back the curtains. It’d been nearly dawn by the time we got to the house, so I knew it had to be at least midmorning, but the fog outside was so thick I couldn’t see anything. I leaned closer, nose pressed to the cold glass.

A bug splattered against the window and I jumped a foot in the air. A laugh sounded behind me.

I whirled, but Tori was still in bed, whimpering in her sleep. She’d thrown off the covers and was curled up on her side, her dark hair spiked across the pillow.

Another chuckle erupted behind me. Definitely a guy’s laugh. But no one was there. No, strike that. I just couldn’t see anyone. For a necromancer, that doesn’t mean no one is there.

I squinted, trying to catch the flicker of a ghost and saw, off to the left, the flash of a hand that was gone before I could see more.

“Looking for someone, little necro?”

I spun. “Who’s there?”

A snicker answered me—the kind of snicker every fifteen-year-old girl has heard a million times from jerk boys.

“If you want to talk to me, you have to show yourself,” I said.

“Talk to you?” he said in an arrogant high school quarterback voice. “I think you’re the one who wants to talk to me.”

I snorted and headed back to bed.

“No?” His voice slid around me. “Huh. I figured you’d want to know more about the Edison Group, the Genesis experiments, Dr. Davidoff . . .”

I stopped.

He laughed. “Thought so.”

The four of us—Tori, Derek, Simon, and me—were on the run from the Edison Group after discovering we were subjects in the Genesis project, an experiment for genetically modifying supernaturals. My aunt Lauren had been one of the doctors involved, but she’d betrayed her colleagues by helping us get away. Now she was being held captive. Or so I hoped. Last night, when the Edison Group tracked us down, a ghost had tried to help me . . . a ghost who had looked like Aunt Lauren.

We were supposedly in a safe house owned by a group opposing the experiments. Now a teenaged ghost showed up, knowing about the project? I wasn’t about to banish him, however tempting it might be.

“Show yourself,” I said.

“Bossy little necro, aren’t you?” His voice slid behind me. “You just want to see if I’m as hot as I sound.”

I closed my eyes, pictured a vague male form, and gave a mental tug. He began to materialize—a dark-haired guy, maybe sixteen, seventeen, nothing special, but with a smarmy smile that said he thought he was. I could still see through him, like he was a hologram, so I closed my eyes to give him another pull.

“Uh-uh,” he said. “You want more, we gotta get to know each other a little better.” He disappeared again.

“What do you want?” I asked.

He whispered in my ear. “Like I said, to get to know you better. Not here, though. You’ll wake your friend. She’s cute, but not really my type.” His voice moved to the door. “I know a place we can chat in private.”

Yeah, right. Did he think I’d just started talking to ghosts yesterday? Well, close—two weeks ago, actually. But I’d already seen enough to know that while there were some ghosts who wanted to help and some who just wanted to talk, there were more who wanted to cause a little trouble, spice up their afterlife. This guy definitely fell in the last category.

Still, if he was another Edison Group subject, one who’d presumably died in this house, I needed to find out what had happened to him. But I wanted backup. Tori had no experience helping me with ghosts and, while we were getting along better, she still wasn’t anyone I wanted watching my back.

So I followed the ghost into the hall, but stopped at Simon and Derek’s door.

“Uh-uh,” the ghost said. “You don’t need to bring a guy along.”

“They’d like to talk to you, too.” I raised my voice, praying Derek would hear me. He usually woke at the slightest noise—werewolves have superhearing. All I could hear, though, was Simon’s snores. There was no one else upstairs. Andrew, the guy who’d brought us here, had taken the downstairs bedroom.

“Come on, necro girl. This is a limited-time offer.”

You know he’s up to no good, Chloe.

Yes, but I also needed to know if we were in danger here. I decided to proceed with extreme caution. My subconscious voice didn’t argue, which I took as a positive sign.

I started walking.

We’d gone straight to bed after we got here, so I hadn’t gotten a good look at our new place. I only knew that it was huge—a rambling Victorian straight out of a Gothic horror movie.

As I followed the voice down the hall, I had the weird sense I was in one of those movies, caught in an endless narrow corridor, passing closed door after closed door until I finally reached the staircase . . . heading up.

From what I’d seen of the house as we’d driven up, it was three stories. The bedrooms were on the second floor, and Andrew had said the third was an attic.

So the ghost was leading me to the dark, spooky attic? I wasn’t the only one who’d seen too many horror films.

I followed him up the stairs. They ended at a landing with two doors. I paused. A hand appeared through the door in front of me, beckoning. I took a second to prepare myself. No matter how dark it was in there, I couldn’t let him see my fear.

When I was ready, I grabbed the doorknob and—

It was locked. I turned the dead bolt latch and it clicked free. Another deep breath, another second of mental preparation, then I swung the door open and stepped in—

A blast of cold air knocked me back. I blinked. Ahead, fog swirled.

A dead bolt on an attic door, Chloe?

No, I was standing on the roof.

AWESOME!!!!!! NEED I SAY MORE!!!!! :)

This is the third book in the Darkest Powers series. It's an awesome book filled with action, adventure, and a lil romance. I'm not gonna lie though, I was a lil disappointed with the end, I think Tori should have gotten to know the big secret about her life,(you'll find out what I'm talking about if you read the book) and we should have gotten to see that in this series. Also the cover didn't really fit the book too much, in this whole book her hair was dyed and not it's natural color strawberry blond like in the other books, I think they should have shown that, I'm too paticular with deatils like that LOL! Of course the rest of the book and the whole series at that is just plain awesome, there's no other word that can describe it so well to me. It's AWESOME! AWESOME! AWESOME!!!!! You can probably see how much I like this whole series by now.Genetically altered Chloe the necromancer, Derek the werewolf, Tori the witch, and Simon the sorcerer are finally away and out of the clutches of the Edison Group. Now safe and sound, or so they think, they start to get suspicious and get answers to questions they seek. Derek completes the change into a werewolf, Chloe is being bothered by a pesky poltergeist and realizes she has feelings for Derek, and all the while the people they trusted to help them are showing their true intentions. Things start to go terribly wrong and people start to die.

    Amazing!!!

I loved this book. It was sooooo good. This whole series was great and this was, in my opinion, the best one. I can't believe she ended up with Derek. Wow! I mean if someone told me that she would be with him while I was reading the first book I would have laughed. It was so entertaining and I can't wait until 'the gathering' comes out. This was truly a remarkable series. I absolutely recommend it along with the rest of the series!

    Amazing!

Obviously, this was great. I was slightly disappointed with the fact that some very minor things were left unexplained. But overall, this book was the best of the series. It was kind of sad at some times, though. But still. Amazing book. This was definitely the best of the trilogy. ;D

Omg Omg Omg I love this trilogy I so know that Chloe is going to end up with Derek I mean Simon is cool to but still its DEREK he is the Best. O so yes Kelley Armstrong writes older books I have not read them because im only a teenager but, I have read over 78 series of books im a freak I know, but this series has a lot of suspense rather than romance but the romance is super mind blowing when it comes which is what is best about this book YOU MUST READ IT!!!!

    I'm Blown Away!

I'm not sure if I can find the words to describe how I felt about this book, but I'm going to try anyway. From the moment I picked it up, I was hooked once again. My love for the series intensified by the time I got halfway through the novel. The nail-biting suspense was next to non-stop, and the budding romance had me squealing with delight at the end. I had tears in my eyes at parts, and at others I was so mad at the characters I wish I could have hit them. The fact that Kelley Armstrong can invoke so many emotions in me within one novel says a lot about her writing style. She is a breath of fresh air in the young adult world, where the standards of writing have been lowered since the publishing of that-book-that-shall-not-be-named that has teenagers going gaga. She develops her characters nicely and the plot moves along at a fast but enjoyable pace. This series is up at the top of my list with Harry Potter and A Great and Terrible Beauty, and I'm looking forward to the next book Armstrong decides to write. :)

This series makes you keep guessing whats happening next. The story setting is in New York with stuff in there that could really happen other than all of the supernatural things. I love them and I recomened the series for anyone who loves an adventure.

    Awsome series

i love this series. I haven't exactly read this one because it hasn't come out yet, but i will get it asap when it does. Anyway, people, you should read it if you like a good mystery and adventure. It kept me begging for more after I finished the second one. I wouldn't read the second one first though. It wasn't as good not knowing what it was about without reading the first. It's just not as good to me. Well, that's about it.

    Great Ending to the Trilogy

Book 3 is as quick to read as the others in the trilogy. Armstrong has a way with pacing her stories so that there is always something happening, leaving the reader barely anytime to take a breath. (How great would these books translate to film?!?!) There is no lack of substance to the characters and we get to see all of the kids evolve even further as they are thrown through loop after loop. While this is a trilogy, the story of the kids is far from over and Armstrong could continue this tale on for many more books if she so desired. (And I would read them!)

These are books that I want my son to read as well. There isn't much that's inappropriate for the younger of the young adult readers. And our lead characters are all strong and stand up for what you believe in and what is right types, which is great to see, especially when the lead female isn't standing around waiting for everyone else to do the heavy lifting. I will certainly be seeking out other writings by Armstrong.

Great series, not my fav book

Kelley Armstrong's Darkest Powers series has been a big hit for me. Although I felt like the series started off a little slow in The Summoning, I saw much potential plot and character-wise. Luckily, I stuck with the books and was rewarded with some truly fabulous storytelling in The Awakening. I loved everything about Chloe's gradual discovery of her powers and the way her relationship with the other Edison Group teens was allowed to naturally develop - all of which left me with some very high hopes for the conclusion of Chloe's story in The Reckoning.

The Reckoning picks up right where The Awakening so cruelly left us hanging: Chloe, Derek, Simon, and Tori are hiding out (again) in hopes of finally evading the nefarious Edison Group, who used the four teens - and others - as lab rats in hopes of genetically altering their supernatural powers. The Edison Group didn't exactly succeed with their little experiment which resulted in some super-charged teens who don't have the foggiest notion of how to control their powers. While Simon can barely cast a spell to save his life, Tori is picking up powerful spells with no apparent effort, and Derek is struggling to cope with his first change into a werewolf with absolutely no direction. Chloe herself is a impressive necromancer but doesn't have a clue how to control her abilities. What these four teens have become masters at however is loyalty. Hoping they have finally stumbled upon allies they can actually trust, Chloe et al set out to rescue the remaining super-teens from the clutches of the Edison Group in hopes of finally shutting the laboratory down once and for all.

I am so sad to see this series at an end. The entire concept of a group of extra-powerful genetically altered teens held under lock and key caught my interest from the first but the well-developed characters and non-stop action kept me happy. Even though much of the story arc and plot devices were similar to those found in the earlier two books, The Reckoning was vastly different from its predecessors. The pace itself was set at a much slower rate: the teens spent much of their time waiting around, gathering information about the Edison Group a bit at a time. This left a lot of time for Chloe to digest her feelings on the Boy Front. To me at least, it's been obvious all along which direction her hormones would lead her, but when Chloe finally admitted to herself which guy she was crushing on, well, my heart did a happy little flip-flop of joy. Despite the fact that I wanted to shake her (repeatedly) for taking so long to figure it out.

Chloe is a powerful necromancer but aside from being able to raise the dead, she's short, average, and doesn't have a clue when it comes to boys. There is much to like about Chloe. I found it intriguing to watch her grow as a character over the course of this series. She's finally got a better grip on her necromancer powers and was even learning to stand up for herself now and again *gasp* - my only complaint is that in The Reckoning Chloe decides she needs to tell us that fact several times. Which quickly got old. On multiple occasions, Chloe repeats that she is no longer a little girl or that her Aunt Lauren was finally seeing her 'all grown up.' Just let the story tell us for itself, mmmkay Chloe? Other than a few issues of that nature, I was happy with this final conclusion - it wasn't as great as The Awakening, but still a solid read.

    The Reckoning

As the Darkest Powers series comes to a close Chloe and her friends must find out what secrets their society of supernaturals, specifically the Edison Group, is hiding. Chloe and her friends have had one heck of a week, after running from Lyle House and then the Edison Group they have finally found a place where they are safe. At least for now. As Chloe, a ghost seer or necromancer will exceptional powers, starts to uncover the secrets of the house they are staying in and the people they are beginning to trust. The group, Simon, Damon, and Tori, must decide who is telling the truth, while dealing with the uncertainties of their accelerated powers. Friendships and loyalties are tested as traitors are revealed. Ultimately, Chloe and the rest must find a way to overcome their differences and figure out the story behind all the secrets.

The Good: The Reckoning is an exciting, action-packed conclusion to a series I have enjoyed immensely. Chloe is an ambitious, stubborn, witty character that makes this story come to life. Damon, on the other hand, is loud and overbearing, but is always trying to put others first. Both of their inner struggles develop them into dynamic, relatable characters that are a joy to read. This story continues to unravel and then form new secrets and twists that keep you turning the pages. And though the first two novels had little romance this one does. And let me just say it's intense. Romantics will not be disappointed. The end of the story is wrapped up very nicely leaving no loose ends unanswered, which most people enjoy at the end of the series. Overall this novel has good flow and style with adventurous characters and enough twists to keep our minds guessing.

The Bad: This novel was very hard to find something negative about it. I found a certain decisions made by the characters unrealistic, even for a paranormal novel. But this novel was my favorite of the trilogy and was an interesting, suspenseful read.

    Edge of your seat ending

She really pulls this book together at with the last of a series. The action adventure and unexpected romance were really well laid out.

    Highly recommend this series.

    The Reckoning

Chloe Saunders used to be a normal girl-that is, until she saw her first ghost. Then she was sent to the Edison Group, a house for people with "special problems." And it turns out that the kids at the house really do have special problems; they not only are super naturals, but they have also been genetically altered by the Edison Group. Now the child-like necromancer Chloe (who is learning to NOT be so child-like), the irritable but extremely powerful witch Tori, the over-protective werewolf Derek, and the amiable sorcerer Simon have finally reached a safe house. But is the safe house really safe?
This group has a lot of problems going on. Chloe is trying to grow up, which is hard when she is constantly assaulted by ghosts, some of who don't have very good intentions for her. Tori is definitely the least-trusted and most-difficult of the group, but she can be reassuring at times too. Derek is growing ever closer to his big change, but everyone still wonders if he will really make the full change to wolf. Chloe and Derek come head to head often, and she even starts to think about what people say. Are werewolves and humans too different to be close? And what will this mean if she has to make a choice between the two boys? Will she choose Simon, the perfect boyfriend, or his best friend Derek, who never makes things easy but nevertheless makes Chloe's pulse race every time she sees him?

    Enchanting

I have read all three books and I have loved them all. Chloe is a character that captures the teenage mind. As you read Ms. Armstrong pulls you along with pieces that make your pulse surge.
