First, the essentials...an easy read, relatable characters and a solid storyline that drew me in immediately. I knew I'd finish the book by page 10 (not a sure thing with many books I read). That said, I must admit, I really didn't expect to like the book as much as I did, especially because it was a first time author. But I found the main character John to be a perfect protagonist...smart and successful in the corporate business world, a family man with morals and humor (albeit some in the unintentional variety) to spare, but yet plenty of flaws that make this story so endearing. A couple of down sides for me. I admire that the female author took a chance at writing this from a male's perspective and for the most part, did it well. However, there were times along the way, that I could see that missing y chromosome in the main charcter's thinking..also thought the touch of religion seemed half- baked and frankly unnecessary. I felt and connected to his moral and spiritual introspection without the aid of him seeing a clergyman. Those hiccups aside...for any person who has ever dipped his toes into the corporate world, this novel touches on the family issues that we all face day to day. While the situation that the main character John deals with is dire, it is this connection that was most magnetic as I read. There are a lot of Johns in this world. In the end the book works because it succesfully asks each of us what we would do under similar cicumstances...if you are a John -- or married to one -- I'd recommend reading the book.
