Restoration. How do you restore a normal life to a family devastated by the loss of a loved one?

When Kathryn, beloved wife of John and devoted mother of Emily and Riley, is killed in a tragic car accident, John must repair his family.

Although he and the children seem to be functioning, John knows that their reality is fragile. Being new to the area and far from family and friends only adds to their isolation. Kathryn had been the glue that held the family together.

John finds comfort in the old, slightly shabby Victorian house that Kathryn had insisted they buy before she died. It was her idea to restore it and build the family a beautiful home. So John, normally a workaholic chained to his computer, begins the restorations that Kathryn wanted.

What he learns as he restores the old house is life changing for himself and his whole family.

Meet the Author

Author Biography

More than twenty years ago, Caron Kamps Widden left Southern California for Atlanta to begin a new life and a new job, and as it turned out—it was only one of many adventures she would find herself writing about someday. Shortly after arriving in the south, Caron met her husband, a transplant himself from New York. They married, and embarked upon a series of transfers around the country for her husband’s work. While raising three children in a handful of houses, Caron found herself renovating and decorating each home with care.

Everywhere they moved, Caron took writing classes and attended workshops, having always been fond of books and words. In college, Caron fell in love with the classics, but she also admires many contemporary authors and revisits their work often. Caron has written articles, short pieces and poems for literary journals and small newspapers and has lent a hand at such publications as, Orange Coast Magazine, and Zoetrope: All-Story, the literary magazine founded by Frances Ford Coppolla. A work in progress, Caron is always searching for a new venue from which to learn. In writing Restoration, her first novel, Caron learned an important lesson—perseverance.

When sitting down to write Restoration, Caron felt comfortable writing from a man’s point a view, having been surrounded by men her whole life and growing up with four brothers. The story and characters were inspired by a collection of people and places from throughout the country and the world, not to mention, from the renovation projects Caron became involved with along the way. Saratoga Springs, the setting for the book, is near where Caron and her family lived for two years in the mid-nineties. John Greene, the protagonist, is a tribute to men who demonstrate great strength of character, and albeit, a bit clumsy at times, always try to do the right thing.

Busy at work on her second novel, Caron is devoted to creating characters and stories to which everyone can relate. With her husband’s most recent transfer, Caron finds herself back home in Southern California—and in many ways, she feels the ‘new life’ she was once after has finally just begun.

A perfect read for those with 'no spare time' to read...

First, the essentials...an easy read, relatable characters and a solid storyline that drew me in immediately. I knew I'd finish the book by page 10 (not a sure thing with many books I read). That said, I must admit, I really didn't expect to like the book as much as I did, especially because it was a first time author. But I found the main character John to be a perfect protagonist...smart and successful in the corporate business world, a family man with morals and humor (albeit some in the unintentional variety) to spare, but yet plenty of flaws that make this story so endearing. A couple of down sides for me. I admire that the female author took a chance at writing this from a male's perspective and for the most part, did it well. However, there were times along the way, that I could see that missing y chromosome in the main charcter's thinking..also thought the touch of religion seemed half- baked and frankly unnecessary. I felt and connected to his moral and spiritual introspection without the aid of him seeing a clergyman. Those hiccups aside...for any person who has ever dipped his toes into the corporate world, this novel touches on the family issues that we all face day to day. While the situation that the main character John deals with is dire, it is this connection that was most magnetic as I read. There are a lot of Johns in this world. In the end the book works because it succesfully asks each of us what we would do under similar cicumstances...if you are a John -- or married to one -- I'd recommend reading the book.
