Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Suze Orman, one of the most trusted and insightful financial experts working today, wrote The Road to Wealth with a single overarching goal in mind: to empower readers to act in their own best interest by giving them honest and useful knowledge about money matters. Orman's earlier bestsellers, The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom and href="http://shop.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbninquiry.asp?sLinkPrefix&isbn=1573221252">The Courage to be Rich, taught people to overcome the emotional, psychological, and spiritual obstacles that prevent them from taking proper control of their finances and their lives. Unlike these books, The Road to Wealth is more of an encyclopedia that covers all of life's major financial stages, from debt reduction to marriage, home buying, and retirement. Written in a friendly question-and-answer format and filled with practical information, this book will prove invaluable to anyone who wishes to make the best possible use of their money.

Introduction

When it comes to money, I deeply believe that the obstacles that keep us from having more and being more are rooted in the emotional, psychological, and spiritual conditions that have shaped our thoughts: In other words, what we have begins with what we think. This is the cornerstone of my approach to personal finance, and it was with this understanding that I wrote The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom and The Courage to Be Rich. I deeply believe that with self-knowledge and emotional clarity, a life of abundance is within reach for all of us.

But once we have looked within and changed our way of thinking about money, another obstacle emerges-one that can keep us from taking the steps we know we should take. That obstacle is confusion. Many of us are confused about where to turn for information we can really rely on. We are confused about whom to ask for financial advice, and maybe even about what questions to ask. When we do get answers to our questions, we are confused because we can't be sure those answers are correct. In the face of all this, it may seem safer not to do anything with our money than to do something we do not entirely understand. But when we postpone necessary financial decisions, we are relinquishing opportunities to protect what we've earned and to enrich our future choices. Good financial information gives us the power to act in our own best interests. That's why I have written The Road to Wealth.

I've spent much of the past few years traveling around the country, holding seminars on financial topics, and listening as many, many people talked to me about their financial hopes and fears. "Tell me what I need to know," people often say to me. "Here is what you need to know," I answer. This phrase, here is what you need to know, captures the very spirit of The Road to Wealth. Here you will find answers to the questions you have been asking, as well as the questions you should be asking, delivered in the most complete, straightforward way I know. The questions and answers are intended to remove obstacles on your road to wealth. In a world of competing financial interests and sources of information, it's important for you to feel as if you have a guide whom you can truly trust. I am honored that you have chosen me to be your guide.

With this in mind, I have tried to provide sound, clear, comprehensive advice on a wide range of issues, which will take you through the course of your financial life. There is a logical sequence of information here, from creating a strong financial foundation to amassing assets and protecting them from common mistakes and periods of economic downturn. The chapters will see you through various life situations, beginning with freeing yourself from debt, for I believe that you cannot build a strong financial future on a base that is undermined by debt. The next chapters guide you through living together, marriage or life partnership, and the complicated process of buying a home for yourself and your family. It will help you to prepare for the future by choosing the right kind of insurance, saving for your children's education, investing knowledgeably both inside and outside retirement accounts, making savvy decisions about retirement income, and providing for the loved ones you will one day leave behind. I have chosen topics that, in my opinion, most affect your life, in both boon times and bad times. In doing so, I have written the practical counterpart to The 9 Steps and Courage-so that, with your head and your heart in agreement, you can take the necessary steps today so you arrive at your tomorrows happily and with all the wealth that is meant to be yours.

The Road to Wealth is a book designed to help you take action-wherever you are in your life, whatever your needs, and whatever the economic climate. To that end, your purchase of this book comes with a free subscription to the Suze Orman E-Newsletter-a bimonthly publication available online through my website, www.suzeorman.com (see page 543 for information on how to begin your subscription). The newsletter provides news, comprehensive resources, and timely counsel on all the topics covered in this book, but focuses on investing for the future. Among many other helpful tips, the newsletter will offer my current recommended asset allocation mix, a bimonthly stock market forecast, and ongoing analysis of proven investment strategies from trusted experts. As interest rates change, I'll make suggestions about refinancing your mortgage. If the laws change-as tax and bankruptcy laws are poised to do, as of the writing of this book-you will find my advice about the new legislation and its implications for your finances. The Road to Wealth will provide you with the paving stones for your financial future, while the newsletter will offer amplification of that information. In that way, this is truly an interactive financial book.

Money is not stagnant; it is ever-changing. It means different things to each of us at different points in our lives. I encourage you to skip around in this book-go directly to the topics that concern you most right now; later, you can move on to matters that are relevant to that moment. Keep this book close and consult it often. Browse through the Table of Contents and the Index. Use it as a second opinion, to make sure you are getting advice that is right for you. And always, always trust that, with the faith and confidence that knowledge brings, step by step you will get to where you want to go on your own road to wealth.

    Helpful, but boring!

Although this book was a requirement for an econ class, I thought Suze Orman would be a safe choice after seeing her on Oprah a few years ago and being intrigued by what she had to say. The Road to Wealth gave a good, basic idea of stocks, mutural funds, college loans, etc. I also enjoyed the encyclopedia-like format, it made it easy to read and reference the more important sections. Her advice for the most part was to the point and interesting, but unfortunately not a lot of it pertained to me, thus drawing the book out even longer. I would recommend this book to those people who are interested in getting started in the stock market or in the financial world, but others should probably try something else.

I Wish It Was Written 25 Years Ago

What a great and insightful book. Suze does it again in a way like only she knows how. Her knowledge filled instructions speak directly to me and help guide me to a strong financial foundation. My only complaint about the book is that it wasn't written 25 years ago, so my parents could have saved for my education. That way I wouldn't be up to my eyes in school loans and credit card debt from buying college books. I hope anyone reading this review will learn from Suze so your children won't be buried up to their eyes like me. My parents didn't have any 'Suze Ormans' in their day to advise them. You will have no excuses. I also loved the book Back On Track To Financial Freedom, By: Andrew J. Green. He handles things a little different but the outcome is the same, Debt free and financially secure.

    Risk reduction

This book has been my financial bible and provides a great deal of valuable information. I have relied of Orman's guidance and have been pleased with both the advice and the results. Recently I was searching for a way to reduce the risk of my family's stock market investments. I was surprised to find my 'bible' had no help in this area. But, I did find a new book (after seeing it mentioned in USA Today) to be helpful with a strategy that provides just the risk reduction I was seeking. In addition, I was pleased to find the book easy to understand. I recommend THE SHORT BOOK ON OPTIONS.

    ONE STAR IS TO BRIGHT

This was the first book I have read by this genius. It will be the last. It appeared she simply had a stack of encyclopedias on life and money and randomly selected topics. There was no direction and absolutly no depth. This was simply Bruce Williams on paper. I will say, that on TV she appeared very knowledgable on any topic given to her by the audience. This book simply seems like a unnecessary follow up.

    Learning the finacial language

Covers most of the basics. It's great for those who are starting from ground zero and for those who might have some holes in their general knowledge of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, health care, insurance, loans, etc. By no means detailed, but good for learning the lingo. Please save yourself the pain and do not buy the audio book. Suze Orman reads it herself and lets just say that it leaves a lot to be desired.

The best financial advise book I've ever seen.

This was my first experience with Suze Orman, and I'm impressed. Her advise is accurate, to the point, and is presented in a very enjoyable manner. When I received 'The Road to Wealth', I began with chapter 5: paying for college. As a father of two young children, I'm concerned with the future education of my children, but was confused with the myriad of savings programs for college and the tax advantages of each.I was also concerned how these programs would affect future financial aide from state or federal programs. Within an hour of starting the chapter, I had a strong understanding of these programs and which ones were best for me. I was also able to outline a plan for my parents who wanted to help with their grandchildren's college expences. Plus the book is loaded with web sites to do more research. This chapter alone paid for itself a hundred fold. I was so excited that I had to share my review right away. This book is a must have for anyone!

    The Midas touch

I have read both Road to Wealth and 9 Steps and I could not be more pleased. They are both practical, inspiring and fun. It is amazing how some of the things we do financially and emotionally tie us down to living 'check to check' and we don't even know it. I have given both out as gifts and will continue to. (I can finally afford to without worrying) If you are looking for a great map to financial stability click the buy button.(You won't regret it...I didn't)

    Everyone should read this!

This book is truly outstanding! I have seen Suze Orman's articles in O Magazine and decided to read her book. I hardly knew anything about retirement and Roth IRA's. After just a few days of reading her book, she has taught me so much and inspired me to start thinking about how to save for retirement. I just turned 30 and thought I was too young to worry about that. She explains differently! Her book also covers many financial topics......how to buy a house......secrets about credit cards...all sorts of stuff. The best thing about the book is that it is easy to understand . She explains it so that common people can understand ! Thanks Suze!!
