Overview

In his acclaimed and beloved Redwall series, New York Times bestselling author Brian Jaques "shows no signs of letting up or slowing down the action." (VOYA) Visit the gentle critters of Mossflower Wood with The Rogue Crew...

In which the brave hares of the Long Patrol team up with the fearless sea otters of the Rogue Crew to defend Redwall Abbey from the terror of both land and sea—the pirate Razzid Wearat…

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Contrary to popular belief, Captain Razzid Wearat is not dead. Severely burned over most of his body and blinded in one eye, yes, but still very much alive. Now, he and his vermin crew have returned to terrorize the seas in their dreaded ship Greenshroud, which bears one striking modification: wheels. With the ability to sail across flatlands as well as the ocean, the Wearat is charting a course for none other than the famed riches of Redwall Abbey. Against him is an unlikely band of two hedgehogs, the hare patrol of Salamandastron, a small army of shrews, and otter king Skor Axehound. With the defenders on foot and racing to reach the Abbey before the Greenshroud, the peaceful residents of Redwall will need inspiration from a legendary warrior to hold off the Wearat until help arrives. As the final story of Redwall, due to the author's recent passing, A Rogue Crew will be a must-read for fans of the twenty-two book series. Many of its themes are familiar and accessible—such as the fact that neither vice nor virtue ever go unrewarded—but would-be readers should be aware that several major characters bear heavy accents written in diction, which may make reading comprehension difficult for some. Despite its furry protagonists, the story also does not shy away from graphic violence, including beheadings, stabbings, and more. For those who know what to expect from Redwall, however, the book is as detailed, engaging and inspiring tale as one could wish for Jacques' final installment. Reviewer: Cara Chancellor
Kirkus Reviews

Animal warriors band together against innovative corsairs in this 22nd novel set in the richly detailed world of Redwall.

Scarred and psychotic Razzid Wearat and his mutinous crew wreak havoc along the coast, but when they head inland and overland on theGreenshroud—having equipped the ship with wheels—the Long Patrol hares, the ruthless Rogue Crew otters and the Guosim shrews must race to save Redwall Abbey. Grim warriors outnumber peaceful Abbey beasts, and there is far more fighting than feasting. The many battle scenes and deaths—of disposable pirates and high-spirited heroes—are graphic but not gratuitous, and the action sequences are carefully choreographed. In contrast to earlier books, the villain faces an ensemble rather than a strong protagonist, which might account for the narrative's rapid scene changes. Despite their species-typical behavior, the characters are distinctive; the squabbling shrew Queen Dukwina and her lizard husband Empraking Dibby, well-shod Dandy Clogs and the gluttonous Wiltuds are particularly memorable. Though the plot, characters and setting resembles those of the previous 21 books, the multi-stranded plot demands attentive reading. The mouthwatering descriptions of food, the various dialects and the detailed settings also make for an immersive experience.

Familiar, perhaps formulaic, but a nonetheless rousing read from the late Jacques.(Animal fantasy. 9-12)

Meet the Author

Brian Jacques
Brian Jacques

Dr. Brian Jacques was both a master storyteller and a jack-of-all-trades. He lived the life of a sailor, actor, stand-up comedian, radio host, bobby, even a bus driver. He was the recipient of an honorary doctorate in literature from the University of Liverpool and a New York Times bestselling author of more than twenty-five books for younger readers, including the wildly popular Redwall series. Dr. Jacques was a lifelong resident of Liverpool, England.

Biography

The drawings that open the chapters in a Redwall book may look sweet, but Brian Jacques' fantasies are not for the faint of heart. Adventure, peril, betrayal, and downright slaughter abound in these hefty novels about the creatures -- mice, hares, moles, badgers, and sparrows -- who inhabit Redwall Abbey in medieval England.

Brian Jacques has had a life nearly as exciting as that of some of his characters: After dropping out of school in his native Liverpool at the age of 15, he traveled the world as a merchant seaman, visiting ports from America to Asia. Upon returning to England, he held a wide variety of jobs, from railway fireman to boxer among them. In the 1960s, he and his two brothers formed the Liverpool Fishermen, a folksinging group. Jacques also tried his hand as a playwright, producing several stage plays -- Brown Bitter, Wet Nellies, Scouse – about native Liverpudlians.

The Redwall stories, which were to earn him legions of fans, were born out of his time as a volunteer storyteller at the Royal Wavertree School for the Blind in Liverpool. Jacques maintains that his detailed writing style was developed here; he was forced to be as descriptive as possible, so his audience would be able to experience his stories as if they could see. He created the first Redwall story as a gift to the children of the school, but never intended to publish it commercially. Fortunately for his many fans on both sides of the Atlantic, a friend sent his first manuscript to a publisher, and the rousing series took off in England in 1986 and in the U.S. the following year with Redwall.

Jacques takes issue with the notion that his books are "fantasy" fiction, a description that he says "smacks of swords and sorcery and dungeons and dragons. . . . I like to think of my books as old-fashioned adventures that happened ‘Once upon a time, long ago and far away.'"

The novels appeal generally to an audience of nine- to fifteen-year-olds, but have admirers both younger and older. The tales pivot on the conflict between good and evil; good invariably triumphs. Indeed, morality issues are always clear in Jacques' books: cruelty, greed, and avarice are eradicated in all forms; bravery, loyalty, and resourcefulness reap rewards aplenty. When it comes to characters, though, Jacques is less simplistic: Martin the Warrior, who through his courage and cunning rose to become the noblest hero in the land, is given to impetuousness, and the miscreant Cluny has both good and bad sides, a la Long John Silver.

For female readers, the Redwall books can be extra satisfying. His female creatures are as adventurous as the males: they don't faint into their male counterparts' arms, but explore, swashbuckle, and rescue on their own. In Mariel of Redwall (1991), the courageous girl mousechild Mariel, thrown overboard by the Gabool, leader of the evil pirate Searats, exacts her own brand of revenge.

Jacques' usually swift pace sometimes comes to a slogging halt with extraordinarily detailed descriptions of the legendary Redwall feasts, right down to the last acorn and drop of buttercup and honey cordial. But the author is redeemed by his delicate interweaving of subplots, his memorable menagerie, his rollicking sense of adventure, and his ability to transport the reader into an entirely different world, a world that, as one critic for The New York Times put it, "is both an incredible and ingratiating place, one to which readers will doubtless cheerfully return."

Good To Know

Brian Jacques wrote his books in longhand or on a manual typewriter, or, if the weather permits, outdoors.

Despite his success as an author, Jacques continued to broadcast the weekly radio show, Jakestown, that he hosted before he wrote the Redwall books.

    4.5 Series of greatness!!!

This series will go down as one of my favorites of all time. I was a little dissapointed with this book just because it was pretty predictable but still a very good read. I really wish he would write a few redwall books from back in the time some. I would really like a book about the badger lord with the blue stripe, but still no matter what I will love this series!!!

The End Of A Legendary Series

It's kinda sad to know that the writer to all those great stories will never be heard of writing ever again (I wish he had one more back-up book.)

    Cannot Wait!!

I really am looking forward to this upcoming book! I have kept up with the series from the start and even with the 21 books that came out I have NOT YET been dissatisfied. Each character is new and charming in its own way and you instantly take a likely, or for the bad guys, an instant disliking. The villains are truly evil and show no sign of remorse, the plots are twisted and original and there is always a riddle that needs to be solved in the most creative way!
I have never not liked a Redwall series book, and I have been reading them since I was in 7th grade and I am now in College!
I cannot wait for this book and I will purchase the book, not download it onto my nook. The adventure this time seems to be really exciting and I am already waiting to find out what will happen! If you haven't read the series I suggest that you start picking up those books because I know that between the battles, and friendship, the comic relief and well as the descriptions of food (Don't read on an empty stomach you will regret it!) it is truly a wonderful world that the author created. I cannot wait to be able to go back to Redwall and Mossflower forest!

    I Also Recommend:

    Cannot Wait to Read- Literally

The Redwall series is so amazing and I can't wait to read the latest book in the series- The Rogue Crew. Brian Jacques books are only getting better so this book should be fanatstic and even better than The Sable Quean, if that's even possible. The summary of the book sounds so exiting and the Redwall books are always better than their summary's so this book should be better than 5 stars. I am not sure if I will be able to wait until 5-03-11 when the story is officially published.

    I agree!

To the person who wrote the review before me. Thank you for writing such a helpful, well informed review!
I would like to add, just for the information of those who are careful what they read, that there is a theme of revenge. I really enjoy this series, but there is definitely a thread of revenge. The good guys often say things like "Because you killed my father, my only goal in life is to avenge him by killing you." I leave you with this information, to do with it as you like. I recommend the Mismantle chronicles, as well. - The Homeschool Ballerina

The Rogue Crew is the 22nd book in the Redwall Abbey series of fantasy novels by Brian Jacques. The one main objection to these stories that I have heard, even from some homeschoolers, is that they are not specifically “Christian” fantasy, like the Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis. At the same time, I would reply that they are definitely NOT “anti-Christian” fantasy like books of Philip Pulliam, nor even occultic fantasy like Harry Potter, and the fact is that they are definitely representative of a general Biblical worldview, as is clear from a 2003 interview of Jacques by Susan Olasky in World Magazine. Jacques said, “In all of my books there is a struggle between the Dark and the Light. Of course, the Light always wins. I try to emphasize the importance of family, of community, of the goals that can be achieved when everyone works together, and at the base of it all is love. ‘Love thy neighbor’ is not just a dry sentiment to me, it's quite real. Such simple words, ‘Love thy neighbors,’ and yet so hard for a great many people to practice.”
He went on to say, “Children understand at a very young age that some things are bad and some things are good. It's a bad thing to hit your brother or sister over the head; it's a good thing to share, to help your mom and dad. It used to be we learned right from wrong at home and church. But that no longer seems to be the case as much as it was when I was growing up. So I try to paint very clear moral signposts at an age when children need to hear very unambiguous messages. ‘This is good. That is bad. Period. End of discussion.’" I especially appreciated the following observations. “I was writing to entertain blind children at The Royal School for the Blind in Liverpool, where I live. And the reason I began to write Redwall was because I had volunteered to read to them. The books they gave me to read to the children were dreadful! They were about dysfunctional families, teen-age pregnancies, drug addiction, alcoholism, and deep psychological problems. I hated those books and so did the children. I kept thinking, ‘Why can't I read to them books that I enjoyed as a kid, full of action, adventure, and derring-do!’ And I went home and began to write Redwall for them.”
In The Rogue Crew the hideously evil Razzid Wearat, supposedly a cross between a weasel and a rat, has sailed his ship, the Greenshroud from his home on the southern Isle of Irgash to the Mossflower area in search of new lands to plunder, leaving a wake of death and destruction. His only defeat had been at the hands of the mighty Rogue Crew of sea otters on the High North Coast led by Skor Axehound. After returning to Irgash to recuperate and repair his ship, Razzid and his vermin come back in the Greenshroud, which now has wheels and can glide over land as well as through water, to take revenge on Axehound, attack the badger mountain of Salamandastron, and eventually conquer the peaceful creatures of Redwall Abbey. The Rogue Crew must join with the brave Long Patrol of hares who serve the badger mistress Lady Violet Wildstripe in an attempt to defeat the Wearat with the help of the ever-present Guerilla Union of Shrews in Mossflower (Guosim) under Log-a-Long Dandy Clogs, the Fortunate Freepaws, and even some cave bats. Who will win the battle? Concerning language, besides a few common euphemisms, the euphemistic “confounded” appears frequently and the term “Hellgates” is found rather often. But it is a very satisfying read. Unfortunately, it is also the last book of the Redwall series. Brian Jacques died on February 5, 2011. He had finished the book before his death, and it was published posthumously. Thus end the chronicles of Redwall.
