I don't have a septic system, I was just interested in an overview of community waste water management. I had so much fun reading The Septic System Owner's Manual, I longed to talk about it with somebody (ANYbody?) and ran into the main downside of this book: people look at you really weird if you try to work the topics into everyday conversation. Each topic is written in a manner that is thorough but easy to understand. Great overviews of how septic systems work, different designs, some fundamnental troubleshooting, ideas on how to help a community choose and expand their communal waste treatment, and an entertaining history of waste treatment over the centuries. There are also some interesting and challenging ideas of how to recycle grey water (from tub and laundry) that could be applied to help homes without septic systems manage their water use in a more sustainable way. If you're looking at understanding how your community is dealing with water use so you can go to city council meetings and make realistic, positive suggestions, depending on the size of your community, you may need other resources -- but I can't think of a better book to start with than this one. Loads of useful basics in a fun-to-read package. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.

Easy to understand. Very practical. This is good information to know. I own a home with a septic system so I purchased this book. I would recommend this book to any homeowner, contractor, owner builder, etc.
This book would be useful to read prior to developing property that requires a septic.

This is a great book with great illustrations that make understanding the basics of septic systems very straightforward. As an engineer, I strongly recommend this book as a reference for those who own a home that is on a septic system or those who are planning on buying a home that is on a septic system. Was this review helpful? The book gives a good background of how a septic system works, but not much troubleshooting. It would have been nice to see more on how to fix problems, who to contact, etc...Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
