Meet the Author

Stephen King
Stephen King

Stephen King, the world's bestselling novelist, was educated at the University of Maine at Orono. He lives with his wife, the novelist Tabitha King, and their children in Bangor, Maine.

Biography

Fiction powerhouse Stephen Edwin King was born in Portland, Maine, in 1947. As a student at the University of Maine at Orono, he wrote a weekly column for the school newspaper, became active in political causes, and met his wife, the former Tabitha Spruce. In the early years of his marriage, King augmented his meager teacher's salary by selling short stories to men's magazines. Then, in 1973 he hit pay dirt: his novel Carrie was accepted for publication, and a major paperback deal provided the means for him to leave teaching and concentrate full-time on writing. Since then, the prolific author has never looked back.

Dubbed the Master of the Macabre for his domination of the horror genre, King has also written bestselling thrillers, mysteries, fantasies, novellas, and short stories, many of which have been turned into blockbuster films and miniseries (A partial list includes Carrie, The Shining, The Stand,, Misery, It, The Shawshank Redemption, The Langoliers, Stand by Me, and The Green Mile). He also has two works of nonfiction to his credit: a gorgeously crafted memoir/scribbler's how-to (On Writing) and Faithful, a chronicle of the Boston Red Sox' stellar 2004 season, cowritten with Stewart O'Nan. In 2003, he received the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.

In between books, the indefatigable King performs in the Rock Bottom Remainders, a rock band that includes among its rotating personnel fellow authors Dave Barry and Amy Tan; attends as many Boston Red Sox games as is humanly possible; and contributes with his wife, Tabitha, to many local and national charities.

Good To Know

Don't believe everything you read about Stephen King. Among the gossip circulating about the scribe is the rumor that he is going blind. King assures his fans that while he is genetically predisposed to a disease called macular degeneration, which could result in blindness, he is not actually going blind.

King is probably one of the most easily recognizable authors alive, and it's not just because of his string of bestsellers. King has appeared in a number of films based on his work, including Pet Semetary, Thinner, and The Stand.

If you've ever wondered why Stephen King has written several books under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, there is actually a very simple explanation: King is so prolific that he felt it necessary to create an alter-ego so that he could publish more than one book a year. The name was a hastily hobbled together combination of writer Richard Stark (ironically, a pseudonym for Donald Westlake) and Randy Bachman of rock group Bachman-Turner Overdrive.

    Highly Recommended

The book The Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King is an excellent book that keeps you reading until the end. King does a very good job at descriptive details; he describes the prison life so well that you would almost believe your right there. The only downfall is the timeline of the book; it jumps back and forth and goes either really fast or really slow. It’s kind of hard to follow along if you don’t truly understand what the timeline is doing.
The story is narrated by man named Red, who killed his wife to collect insurance. Everyone is probably thinking “what an awful man” and “I already don’t like this guy” but throughout the story without knowing, you start to actually feel sorry for him and everyone else in the prison. I don’t know what it is that Stephen King does but you really start to feel like they all have done nothing wrong.
When a man by the name of Andy Dufrense comes to Shawshank on charges of killing his wife Linda Dufrense and her lover Glenn Quentin, who was a golf pro he changes the prison and he becomes a man nobody will ever forget. Andy claims to be not guilty, and throughout the story he tries to prove that. He usually keeps to himself and he has this attitude about him that doesn’t seem right for a prisoner at Shawshank prison. He walks around calmly and upright just as if he was talking a walk through the park, this doesn’t land Andy many friends. While doing his time in Shawshank he is constantly fighting a battle with these men people call the sisters and his freedom.
This book is a very adventurous and somewhat mysterious book, it’s probably not suitable for younger readers just because of the language and some sexual content, but I would definitely recommend it to young adults.

    must read

“Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption” by Stephen King explores many different things. The book tells a story of friendship in the prison system. It shows the camaraderie between inmates and how each of them looks out for the other as much as they can. The book goes into detail about one specific friendship and explains it every well.
“Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption” can be hard to follow at times. The narrator tends to jump around in the story a lot because he is literally telling the story by memory. He will mention something and then say that he get back to it later. Then, he revisits it. He never leaves you wondering about something after he has mentioned it. If you tend to get lost in a book if the story line does not go in the right order, this is not the book for you.
This book does explain a great moral. Never lose hope” is conveyed throughout the entire book. It is very indirect you have to think about it. The book can challenge readers to think outside the box. It also has great suspense and will always keep you guessing.
The main character, Andy, has been convicted of a crime. He did not commit the crime as he says and you find out in the first few pages. The book goes into detail about how he has changed and what he does and the way he manages to stay hopeful.
The book has a special twist at the end of the story. You find something out that is so small that chances are, you missed it throughout the whole book. The suspense will lead you all the way to the end and you will no thave any unanswered questions.
Stephen Kings “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption” is a great book of friendship and hope.

    Shawshank Redemption.

I’m sure that most people have seen the movie or read the short story by Stephen King “Shawshank Redemption.” This is a story about a man in prison in Red Redding who is telling you about his stint in prison and the story of one of his friends in Shawshank prison. The story is based around Red in the future telling you about Andy Dufresne’s experiences in prison. Andy Dufresne is in jail for the murder of his wife and her lover. This is a crime in which Red believes Andy did not commit.
There is a common theme throughout the story and it is to never give up hope. The message is really uplifting. They show that they can make the best of prison and that they look forward to the sunny beaches when they get out.
This story has many positives and very few negatives. Positives are: Stephen King is incredible at setting the scene of the story; you can tell that every word of the story is meant to be there and it has an importance. I believe that the point of view in which the story is told helps to see the story in the way that everyone else sees the story; from the outside looking in. You do not know what Andy is thinking, you do not know if Andy is actually guilty of these murders. I also think at the same time that this is just the fun of the story; you do not have to know all of the facts. You are just kind of left with the mystery.
There are a few drawbacks of the story for example I wish it were longer! Also the end of the story end sort of abrupt. It would have really been nice if he would have written a sequel.
This is a very good book and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys drama, moderate suspense, and some thrilling action.

    Great book

This was better then the movie it was outstanding I mean how Stephen King talk all about the things in this story Andy got convicted of Murder and he hated staying at Shawshank. The first couple months that he was there he really didn't have any friends til he meet 'red' When andy asked 'I heard your the one who can get things' it really caught me by surprise. Alot of other things that happened in this stroy is that Andy & Red had a very great friendship for over twenty years. This book really is a good one you got to check it out.

The only thing I can say is 'WOW'. King has made a masterpiece which will live among the greats like Green Mile and Hannibal (by Thomas Harris).

    Speachless

This book deserves more than 5 stars. when i first watched the movie, i was only 10. so i didn't understand it. But then i watched it all over again jst recently, then read the book. i laughed, cried and felt so many emotions at once. andy is so strong, after all that, striving. motivation and determination can get you anywhere. This is definatly one of Stephen Kings best. something that DOESN'T have anything to do with good or evil, freaky fat ladie, gypsies, or phsyco animals.

    *INTREGING*

This book (actually I watched the movie) was one of the best movies that I have ever seen. It proves that people can and will follow their dreams if they follow their hearts wether it be good or bad. If you've never watched the movie-you need to watch it! I recommend it! Along with my other recommendations below! There great books...read 'em and then you can tell me different! And personally, I don't think that ***** stars is nearly what it should be!
