Short But Great Gothic Romance
This is an excellent classic gothic love story from Ann Radcliffe. It is as good as The Mysteries of Udolpho even though A Sicilian Romance is a relatively short story.
Julia refuses to marry the tyrant duke, but her father gives her no other option. She flees from his protection, and endures great torment while she is hunted down by the people of her father, the duke, and banditti. She receives assistance at different intervals from her servant who helped her escape, her brother, her lover (Hippolitus), and her instructress. In the end the mystery of the south tower is unraveled, and virtue triumphs over evil. The only unanswered question I have is ...what happened to the duke? Did he just give up his search after Hippolitus escaped him?
