Overview

A Deranged Killer's Twisted Urges

In the streets of New York City, the Slasher chooses his victim—and makes his move. As he wraps his fingers around the girl's pretty throat, his power increases. As he carves into her skin, his words become flesh. As he arranges her lifeless body in a loving tableau, his fantasies demand new, more violent sacrifices...

A Profiler's Cunning Plan

At first, NYPD detectives suspect a jealous boyfriend. But criminal profiler Lee Campbell senses something darker, even ritualistic, about the murder. More chilling, he's convinced he's witnessing the genesis of a full-blown serial killer. But time is running out. A new victim has been chosen. Campbell must search the most terrifying recesses of the human mind—and his own past—before the screaming starts again...

C.E. Lawrence is the byline of a New York-based suspense writer, performer, and prize-winning playwright whose previous books have been praised as "lively. . ." (Publishers Weekly); "constantly absorbing. . ." (starred Kirkus Review); and "superbly crafted prose" (Boston Herald).

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In New York not long after 9/11, appealing psychologist-turned-criminal profiler Lee Campbell is traumatized by the unsolved disappearance of his sister in the mid-1990s. Though still recovering from a nervous breakdown, Lee is determined to keep working with the NYPD and find the man who leaves his female victims mutilated in churches throughout Manhattan, even if it means enduring painful reminders of his past. Lawrence (a pseudonym for Carole Buggé, author of the Claire Rawlings mysteries) assembles a quirky group of detectives and experts, all strong characters who can support future books in the series: Chuck Morton, the commander of the Bronx Major Case Unit, who married Lee's ex; Eddie Pepitone, a hustler who befriended Lee in the hospital; Dr. Katherine Azarian, a forensic pathologist and Lee's love interest; and brilliant criminal justice professor John Paul Nelson. Fans of Keith Ablow will enjoy this dark, intriguing thriller. (Dec.)

    Silent Screams

This is a truly harrowing experience .. a thriller rooted in character analysis that spares neither protagonist nor antagonist! The story of a serial killer and the man who must track him down: a criminal profiler whose personal life has brought him to the brink of emotional destruction.

Normally, I avoid novels about serial killers, though I have read excellent examples by Connolly, Kellerman, and Lehane. But "Silent Screams" is so deeply rooted in the (almost unattainable) joy of life that when it takes one into the lower depths, the struggle for a better humanity counteracts the darkness and blood-letting. I don't remember reading anything this intense that wasn't written originally in Russian!

    Pretty good!!

This was my first book to read on my Nook-I was a little worried I wouldn't be able to get into the story like I do with traditional books but this book had me hooked! It was easy to follow and had good suspense. A little creepy to read at home alone at night, which I like in a mystery/suspense novel.

This book was SO worth the read...

The author's keen insights and depth of character development pulled me into this story and never lost its grip. I found myself cheering on the profiler in the case and at the same time felt a degree of sympathy for the killer. This is a true "potato chip" book, because once you start reading, you just can't stop!

    Highly reccommended-Check it out!

I couldb't put it down. The suspense slowly rose to a fever pitch. The protagonist Lee is as haunted as the killer. C.E. LAwrence makes you feel soory for bith of them. Looke forward to reading more from this author.

    Good book

Good book, kept my interest throughout. With few clues as to who the culprit is for the armchair detective, I found it more of a police procedural than a mystery. Still, a good read.

    a believable crime thriller

I'm not normally a fan of this genre, but I enjoyed this book very much. I thought it was much better written than, say, a Dan Brown. Part of the reason I probably liked it was because it was set in NYC. I also found it interesting to read because of the tidbits related to actual crimes, for instance, the rate at which the body temperature declines after a person has died, or the fact that fingerprints can be gathered from inside latex gloves. I would especially recommend this book to anybody who enjoys mysteries.

Entertaining read, but needs an editor!

I was entertained by this book and enjoyed the twist at the end. However, the grammatical and spelling errors began to get annoying. Then in one chapter, two characters participate in a conversation when they weren't even in the room. They are quoted during the conversation, but then enter the room later in the chapter.

    Thoroughly Enjoyable

As an extremely picky reader, I thoroughly enjoyed this. Great plot with a nicely woven cast of characters. Lee Campbell is wonderfully human and prone to all the faults, quirks, and habits as the rest of us. I could not put this book down and once I finished, I went back and read it again! I was grabbed from the first sentence and immediately began hoping for a followup. It might not be what some people were expecting but I truly enjoyed this and would--I have actually--recommended it to my friends.

Not the story, the way it was written...

The storyline was OK. The way it was written was stilted, predictable and overdone. Sounded like a TV script for Criminal Minds (where I actually heard a part of this book recited word for word! Unless I was having Deja Vu)

Great Plot, not so great leading character

The story was really good and all of the other characters were great. However, the leading character Lee Campbell, the profiler, suffers from depression after 9/11; and his sister has been missing for years and is presumed dead. His depression is understandable, but, after awhile enough is enough and it gets very tiresome reading about him in the throws of his depression. I liked the book's plot enough to purchase the next book in this series, Silent Screams, hoping Campbell would improve and the book would reflect this...not to be. Once again great story and a very depressed as well as depressing Campbell. C. E. Lawrence's books show great potential and are enjoyable if you can overlook the extremely depressing leading character. My advice to the author is to get some medication down Campbell and cheer him up a little or get a new leading character.

    very good read

This was a great read that you won't want to put down. There was a bit of unnecessary repetition but other than that, I thought it was excellent w/ an excellent ending.

    Great late night read!

Couldn't put it down. The character interactions were interesting, moves along well. The main profiler in the story is troubled, and vulnerable. You are drawn into the stories within the main story. I am going to look up the others in this series.

    Hideous

I, as another reader posted, only gave this book a 1 star because I had to. This was my first book to read on my nook, figured it would be good based on some of the reviews. I had to FORCE myself to finish it, it was extremely boring and I found myself extremely confused during most of it because the plot line and characters moved around in an unorganized and horrid fashion. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!

Excellent read. Endearing characters and a surprise at the end!

I found this novel by C.E. Lawrence excellent. I read Silent Victim first and fell in love with her masterful art of character development. This story was her first, where Lee Campbell was introduced. You'll fall in love with the characters quickly, and wonder what will happen with each as the story evolves. I read both novels in a week of evening reading. They are fast, but excellent stories. I am eager for her next novel, Silent Kill to come out in Fall 2011!
