Overview

An ancient curse...
A prize beyond imagination...
Juan Cabrillo will face one to win the other.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In the winning seventh entry in the Oregon Files nautical adventure series from bestseller Cussler and Du Brul (after Corsair), Juan Cabrillo, the heroic skipper of the Oregon, a state-of-the-art warship disguised as a tramp steamer, faces a multitude of difficulties and challenges. A fabulous pirate treasure may lie at the bottom of a deep well on Pine Island in Washington State. In Argentina, a junta of generals has seized power and turned the country into a police state with designs on the rest of South America. The discovery of the remains of a WWII-era blimp in the Argentine jungle ups the ante. At the bottom of the sea off Antarctica, where the Argentines have opened a secret oil field, lies a huge, ancient Chinese vessel, which could help the Chinese, who are in league with the Argentines, in any legal claim to Antarctic territory. The action seesaws from subtropical jungles to the bitter cold of the Antarctic as Juan leads his band of intrepid scientist warriors into battle against a host of nefarious enemies. A cliffhanger ending will leave fans panting for more. (Mar.)

Meet the Author

Clive Cussler
Clive Cussler

Clive Cussler is the author of many New York Times bestsellers, most recently The Spy and Lost Empire. He lives in Arizona.
Jack Du Brul is a graduate of the Westminster School and George Washington University. Trying to add as much adventure to his life as he does to his novels, Du Brul has climbed Masada at noon, swam in the Arctic Ocean off Point Barrow, explored war-torn Eritrea, camped in Greenland, and was gnawed on by piranhas in the Amazon River. He collects zeppelin memorabilia and when not writing or traveling (25 countries and counting), he can be found in a favorite chair with a book and a brandy. Jack Du Brul lives in Burlington, Vermont.

Biography

Cussler began writing novels in 1965 and published his first work featuring his continuous series hero, Dirk Pitt, in 1973. His first non-fiction, The Sea Hunters, was released in 1996. The Board of Governors of the Maritime College, State University of New York, considered The Sea Hunters in lieu of a Ph.D. thesis and awarded Cussler a Doctor of Letters degree in May, 1997. It was the first time since the College was founded in 1874 that such a degree was bestowed.

Cussler is an internationally recognized authority on shipwrecks and the founder of the National Underwater and Marine Agency, (NUMA) a 501C3 non-profit organization (named after the fictional Federal agency in his novels) that dedicates itself to preserving American maritime and naval history. He and his crew of marine experts and NUMA volunteers have discovered more than 60 historically significant underwater wreck sites including the first submarine to sink a ship in battle, the Confederacy's Hunley, and its victim, the Union's Housatonic; the U-20, the U-boat that sank the Lusitania; the Cumberland, which was sunk by the famous ironclad, Merrimack; the renowned Confederate raider Florida; the Navy airship, Akron, the Republic of Texas Navy warship, Zavala, found under a parking lot in Galveston, and the Carpathia, which sank almost six years to-the-day after plucking Titanic's survivors from the sea.

In September, 1998, NUMA - which turns over all artifacts to state and Federal authorities, or donates them to museums and universities - launched its own web site for those wishing more information about maritime history or wishing to make donations to the organization. (www.numa.net).

In addition to being the Chairman of NUMA, Cussler is also a fellow in both the Explorers Club of New York and the Royal Geographic Society in London. He has been honored with the Lowell Thomas Award for outstanding underwater exploration.

Cussler's books have been published in more than 40 languages in more than 100 countries. The author lives in Arizona.

Good To Know

Cussler worked for many years in advertising and was responsible for coming up with Ajax's "White Knight" commercial catchphrase, "It's stronger than dirt."

    Another great "Oregon Files" story

Our hero Juan Cabrillo comes through again. An interesting and exciting story from the Oregon Files. Going from South America to the Pacific Northwest to Antartica, globe hopping all over. Great story line. Have always loved the way Cussler mixes in actual historical events and builds a great story around them.
Cabrillo is the Errol Flynn swash-buckling hero of our times. Love the whole premise of the Corporation and the Orgegon and it's crew. A dedicated bunch. Hopefully there will be many more stories to come in this series.

    Adventure on the High Seas

I confess, I'm a huge Clive Cussler fan and have been for decades so whenever he releases a new novel I'm up for the adventure. The Silent Sea does not disappoint. It's practically non-stop excitement and it had me guessing until literally the very last paragraph. As usual, Cussler and DuBrul weave a great tale of adventure. Highly recommended! I also recommend DuBrul's Philip Mercer series.

    Book Ruined my day

Major problem with this book is it prevents me from living life. Like all of Cussler's adventures, it removes the reader from the real world. So, I almost missed a flight. I was the last one off the plane, and I preferred sittng and reading in the hotel room rather than attend the meetings I paid good money to attend. So, the bottom line is, don't buy this book unless you are willing to set aside time to leave your real world and have a great page turning read in Cussler's world.

    Brick reads Cussler BEST!

We listened to this on a long trip from New Jersey to Virginia, up and back. It is entertaining, connected to previous reads, and different enough to hold your interest in Washington traffic! As always Cussler starts with threads and weaves them together. The chase is thrilling and the characters are in their element. Brick reads the script well and his voice has the right tembor to keep you asking for more. A great fun read!

    Cussler Rocks ! ! !

I have yet to read a Cussler book that has not turned into a page turner. The start takes some patience, but once the real story line gets started, it is non-stop action to the end.
In this book, the story centers around the characters from his Oregon Files series. There is a time when it was hard to see how the different stories being told inter-related but then all of a sudden it hits you and it is at that point you want to keep reading to see what happens next.
Any fan of Clive Cussler's is going to enjoy this book, I know I did.

Great story! Mystery and excitement all the way through!

I enjoyed this story very much. I was not sure what it was about, but I will be looking for more of Clive Cussler's work. I think it would be a good read for anyone age 13 and up, and if a younger person was a good reader, they would enjoy it also.

This is a grabber right from the beginning. My only regret is that I didn't start with the first book in the series.

    The Silent Sea

Clive Cussler's novels are so fascinating. This one begins with five brothers exploring a shaft on a small island rumored to hold pirate's treasures. Then the US is brought into the Second World War with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This prologue pulled me in and I am glad it did. Fast forward to the present, Cussler's hero Cabrillo is trying to recover a US satellite that crashed the jungles of Argentina and finds the remnants of a blimp. From the jungles to Antarctica the adventure builds up with enough action to keep Cabrillo busy. This definitely was one page turner.

    Classic Cussler

Juan, Max, Julia and all the boys in yet another great swashbuckling adventure out to save the world from another global threat. I never want it to end and all too frequently, the end of the book comes far too quickly. All of Mr. Cussler's hero's keep the male readers wanting to be that hero and all us female readers wanting to marry them - all of them. Wonderful characters that you just love to love and non-stop action that you just hate to set the book down to do anything else. The frigid Antarctic setting is no exception in this chapter of Juan's life. Bravo, Bravo! once again - you never leave me disappointed.

    I Also Recommend:

    a good read

The Silent Sea is a can't put down book like many of Clive Cussler's other books. Each page has you wanting to keep turning the page to find out what happens next. He does jump from one set of characters to the other and he is good at intergrating them at the same time as their stories meet towards the last quarter of the book. Juan Cabrillo is deffently has his hands full in this adventure. And there is an unexpected event that will have anyone in tears as they are reading. I think this is one of the best books I have read in a long time. Clive Cussler pulled out all the stops in this book. As I finshed the book I am anxious for the next Oregon Files installment to see what happens next.

    Another Good one for Cussler

I haven't read a book of Mr. Cussler that I didn't enjoy, and this was no exception. It is a easy read and flows very quickly. Can't wait till the next one!

Nother awesome Oregon Files book from Clive Cussler and Jack DuBrul. A great pairing of two fantastic authors.

Keep these books coming! I have all of Clive's books and all of Jack DuBrul's. I can't wait for another one from Clive relating to all of his characters and to Jack DuBrul's Philip Mercer.

What a great pairing of these two authors. Keep up the great work.

    He's done it again!

If you don't like books with twists and turns or endings that leave you hanging, don't get this book. I have read all Cussler's books except one or two of his non-fiction books. While some are definitely better than others, I can't recall any that were just stinkers. This particular book, I thought was excellent. His books maybe more your typical "guy" type books, but I love action, adventure, and excitement and this one delivers all with a maddening ending. I am ready for the next one in this series. All his characters are believable, strong people and Cussler combines them with enough history tossed into a plot with lots of twists and turns to keep you turning the pages. He has really strong main characters, but most work with a team of some sort and all bring a different expertise to the project. This book, like most of Cussler's books, blends several historical possibilities/probabilities with believable modern day scenarios. The Oregon Files and Dirk Pitt series are my favorite of his books, but I enjoy them all. One of the things I really enjoy is that even though he writes series type books, they each will stand alone. You don't get lost because you didn't read them in order or any others before you read your first one. "Raise the Titanic" was my first many, many years ago and I scoured the country until I have and have read them all. Enjoy!

    Great Book from Great Author

"Silent Sea" is a great book from Clive Cussler, though not his best one ever. The only real problems I have with this book is that he doesn't go into detail about the historical aspects of the book like he used to. It is also to get interested when the only threatening action by the protagonists in a global scale. Otherwise the book is funny, suspencefull, dramatic, informative and everything you would want in a book!

Still good after all these years!

I've been a Clive Cussler fan for many years, and his newest work is not a disappointment! Great story line that keeps moving, twisting and turning, and you rarely know what is coming next. Great for a fun, entertaining and relaxing read that doesn't take too much mental energy or thought.

    Very exciting story

This installment of the Oregon Files does not disappoint. The state of the art ship, Oregon, continues to excel whilst keeping up the pretext of being an old rust bucket. Along with a paid assignment, Juan Cabrillo and the corporation go out on a limb to do the right thing. It's exciting from start to finish. Readers new to the Oregon Files will get to know the corporation's members while previous readers will be reacquainted by the brief background information. On this adventure we get to see the younger members have a little more field experience. I didn't want to put this book down and enjoyed every minute of it.

Cussler and Du Brul do a fine job in a good action tale.

I am not that much of a fan of the Oregon series, but I have learned to enjoy the technology used by the "Corportation" in solving potential earth-ending problems. They were first introduced in a Dirk Pitt novel some ways back. They were hired to help NUMA with a tricky assingment. The characters are unique and fun, so it is a good read.

Any book with Cussler writing or sharing the authorship, as he does here, is worth the read for pure adventure.
