Overview

New York Times bestselling author Laura Childs sends her scrappy sleuths into New Orleans' French Quarter.

Is nothing sacred? The last thing Carmela Bertrand and her friend Ava expected to bear witness to in St. Tristan's Church was a crime. But now a beloved member of their scrapbooking circle lies lifeless next to a smashed statue of St. Sebastien-and a mysterious hooded figure has absconded with an antique crucifix.

As Carmela and Ava are drawn deeper into New Orleans' French Quarter in search of the missing crucifix, they may need the help of more than a few patron saints. Because this is one killer they don't want to cross...

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The theft of a religious icon from New Orleans’ St. Tristan’s church leads to murder in Childs’s disappointing ninth Scrapbooking mystery (after 2010’s Fiber & Brimstone). Carmela Bertrand, the proprietor of the scrapbooking shop Memory Mine, and her friend Ava Gruiex happen to be in St. Tristan’s when the mayhem begins, and they know the victim, so Carmela soon agrees to investigate when another friend begs her to do so. Carmela’s boyfriend, homicide detective Edgar Babcock, asks her to stay out of it, but she ignores him and sets out with Ava to look for suspects. A good deal of scrapbooking and other design activity are included along with the sleuthing, but they’re not enough to save the story. Carmela and Ava engage in some very dumb behavior; Babcock is completely ineffectual; dialogue is often trite; and, when the murderer is revealed, the reason behind it all is silly. (Oct.)
Library Journal
The scrapbookers are on a tear in the French Quarter of New Orleans when one of their own is killed with a stolen crucifix. Childs's ninth outing (after Fiber & Brimstone) has the winning formula, plus tips and recipes.

    Another Fun Mystery

Sometimes declining a book because it doesn't fall under the genre you read or deals with a hobby you don't fancy could result in you missing out on a wonderful read.

That was my mistake when author Laura Childs first came out with her Scrapbooking mystery series. Even though I enjoyed Childs' other books greatly and the new series dealt with mystery, I didn't scrapbook and couldn't see myself reading anything dealing with that. Oh, how very wrong I was. You don't have to love (or even like) Scrapbooking to enjoy this series.

SKELTON LETTERS is the 9th installment in the series and is a stand alone book. Childs blends enough background information to keep new readers informed, while reminding returning fans of previous encounters by the protagonist and her group of zany friends.

Protagonist Carmela Bertrand and her closest friend, Ava Gruiex, are in the historic St. Tristan's Church when they hear a scream and see a hooded figure strike a woman. When they go to give assistance, they discover Byrle Coopersmith has been killed and an antique crucifix stolen.

While she may be the proprietor of Memory Mine Scrapbooking shop, Carmela has a talent for getting involved in murder investigations. Getting a reputation as an amateur sleuth, Carmela always drags Ava, owner of Juju Voodoo, into harm's way right along with her. Since Byrle was a member of Ava's scrapbooking group, it's only natural that she begin doing a little snoopy on her own. As she and Ava start looking into the murder and theft, they may need to call upon all the patron saints to help them just stay alive, much less catch the killer/theft.

Childs has brought back her wonderful characters, put them together with an intriguing plot and the colorful backdrop of New Orleans' French Quarter for a delightful read. Childs brings the sights, sounds and smells of New Orleans to live with her vivid descriptions. In addition, she dots Scrapbooking tips and techniques throughout the story but doesn't overwhelm the non-scrapbook reader. She also divvies up some delicious and yummy New Orleans-style recipes like Carmela's Chicken Jambalaya and Bayou Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp.

SKELTON LETTERS will keep you intrigued from the first paragraph until the very end. There's plenty of suspense with bits of humor now and then to keep the story cozy and not to dark despite the dead bodies that keep turning up.

FTC Full Disclosure - This book was sent to me by the publisher in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review.

Fans of the series will root for the dynamic duo as they work the case of a regular murdered in a church

Memory Mine scrapbooking shop owner Carmella Bertrand and JuJu Voodoo store owner Ava Gruiex visit historic spooky St. Tristan's Church in New Orleans' French Quarter. The friends hear a noise followed by a scream and a crash. A hooded figure pushed a statue onto Byrle Coopersmith, a regular attendee at Carmella's scrapbook group. The culprit escapes as Ava calls 911. They also learn that an ancient crucifix apparently was stolen also.

NOPD Detective Edgar Babcock warns his girlfriend Carmella to stay out of the investigation as he knows she is prone to snoop. He also tells her the killer used blunt force with St. Sebastian as the murder weapon. However when Babcock fails to take the lead and encouraged by the scrapbook regulars who do not trust dispassionate detective Bobby Gallant to dig deep, Carmella and Ava investigate the murder of a friend.

Although amateur sleuths coincidentally finding a corpse and feeling compelled to behave foolishly by investigating are not new concepts (see Death Swatch), readers will enjoy the latest scrapbooking mystery (see Fiber & Brimstone) as the BFFs place themselves in danger with their inquiry. The cozy is fun to follow and there are plenty of scrapbooking tips. Fans of the series will root for the dynamic duo as they work the case of a regular murdered in a church.
