Overview

Based on the true story of Brigade-Major Harry Smith and the very young Spanish noblewoman he met and married during the Peninsular Wars, when the Duke of Wellington's forces fought Napoleon's army in Spain and Portugal.

After marrying Harry Smith when she was 14 years old, Juana Smith "followed the drum," marching at the back of the troops along with the other wives and the officers' servants. Juana became a camp favorite, charming all with her youthful enthusiasm. In spite of the danger, Juana thrived on military life and her passionate, if somewhat stormy, relationship with Harry.

Heyer's research encompassed every available diary from that time period, including Harry Smith's, and all of the Duke of Wellington's writings and dispatches. She brings alive military life during the Regency period, how the armies marched and fought, as well as how the nobility provided for its own comfort with servants, horses, dogs and furniture.

The late Georgette Heyer was a very private woman. Her novels have charmed and delighted millions of readers for decades, though she rarely reached out to the public to discuss her works or personal life. She was born in Wimbledon in August 1902. She wrote her first novel, The Black Moth, at the age of seventeen to amuse her convalescent brother; it was published in 1921 and became an instant success.

Heyer published 56 books over the next 53 years, until her death from lung cancer in 1974. Her work included Regency romances, mysteries and historical fiction. Known as the Queen of Regency romance, Heyer was legendary for her research, historical accuracy and her extraordinary plots and characterizations. Her last book, My Lord John, was published posthumously in 1975. She was married to George Ronald Rougier, a barrister, and they had one son, Richard.

    a shining combination!

    i must have read 40+ heyer titles before i decided to read this one. i must confess right here that because of the generally bland reviews it received from some heyer fans, i didn't think it would be a worthwhile read. in any case, i finally picked it up when i couldn't find anything else of heyer's... well, blow me down! maybe it's a bit different from most of heyer's works, but as i progressed through the story, i couldn't help but be enthralled... more so, when i learned that its main protaganists were actually real people! the usual ingredients that attracted me to heyer's body of work are here -- wit, adventure, sense of fun, fascinating characters, bawdily pungent and elegant conversations that make this period unique -- interspersed with the horrors and brutalities of war (set in the Peninsular War). but what really sealed the deal was its almost playful treatment of some historical characters (not least the Duke of wellington and some of his officers). it just made the whole period come alive for me. i must admit, too, that this was the catalyst that sparked my intense interest in the Peninsular War. so all in all, its thanks to authors like Heyer and Susanna Clarke that i am currently expending time and resources to dig up more details about this fascinating era. the lead characters (harry and juana smith) are nothing less than riveting creatures, full of life and pluck even their friends and colleagues (and animals!) shine, too. the book starts around the middle of the Peninsular War, a few days before harry (an energetic Brigade-Major of the the famous Light Division) and his teenage bride-to-be meet, and ends at Napoleon's final defeat in Waterloo. this book cleverly combines history, romance, and adventure with humor, pathos and charm. READ IT

    Historical

    I didn't realize when I bought this book that it was VERY much a historical novel. Just keep in mind that there's a lot of descriptions about battles and army maneuvering, not just the story about him and his new wife.

    Great story and interesting history

    Ms. Heyer is still one of my favorite authors, even though she has passed on. The Spanish Bride is about Wellington's Spanish campaign during the Napolleanatic War. It follows the battles and progress of his army into France. It would be a dull read except that the main characters in this book actually existed and the romantic meeting between the hero and his lady really took place. Most of the really funny parts of the book also really happened. Ms. Heyer was always known for her research and with this book she used several dairies written by the soldiers in Wellington's Army. Please take a moment to read this book, the only bad thing I have againest this book is that the spacing between words are off. I started to just expect every 6 or so pages to have either a mispelled word or a spacing issue.
