Absolutely fantastic!
Well, I'm just going to say I'm a huge fan of Jackson Pearce. She makes hilarious videos on YouTube, has awesome liveshows every Wednesday, and is just really, really cool. She has two books that are already out: As You Wish, which I haven't read because it's hard to find, and Sisters Red, which I have read. I thought it was incredible, and Sweetly is it's companion novel (not a sequel, exactly). So, naturally, when I saw I could sign up for a book tour for Sweetly, I did so immediately! Now, let's talk about the book! When I started reading, I had trouble really getting attached. Probably because I had a lot on my mind, so I had trouble focusing. But after a few chapters, I started to really, really get into it. Since this is a re-imagining of Hansel and Gretel, there are obviously some themes from the original tale throughout the book. But it was wonderful, because Jackson Pearce completely made it her own. One example being that there was a third sibling. But I won't to point out anything else, because it may be kind of spoiler-y, so....Oh! Since this is a companion to Sisters Red, there were quite a few...little threads connecting the two books, and I loved reading them. I thought Gretchen was a wonderful character--I really loved reading through her point of view. It was interesting to see how that trip to the woods had really affected her, even all these years later. All of her scenes with Samuel, I absolutely loved, as well. This was also because I thought Samuel was wonderful and amazing (I may have been crushing on him a bit). I loved their whole relationship--it seemed very realistic to me! Well, as realistic as you can get with their story. Her brother, Ansel, was incredibly sweet, and I thought his little subplot with Sophia was fun, just to read about. And Sophia...she was an awfully complicated character. Technically, she is the "witch," like the original story. But Sweetly is so different from that original story, it's really hard to say. You wanted to like her, but, at the same time, there was something so off about her. Definitely keeps you guessing! Also, I'm going to have to give a shout-out to Ms. Judy, because every word that came out of her mouth made me fall over laughing! Lots of amazing character growth, overall. (Except for, maybe, Ms. Judy.) I can't really talk about the plot much, without spoiling some major secrets, but...It was a wonderfully written, mysterious story that I was completely absorbed in. Definitely hard to put down! The ending was pretty open, which I liked and didn't like at the same time. It was pretty sudden, as well. I just wanted more, because I wanted to spend time with these characters forever. It still was a good ending, though. Hopefully, there will be another companion book, so I can have more of something in this universe! Oh, and how epic is this cover? So awesome and creepy--I love it! Overall, I absolutely loved it. I was very sad to send it on to the next person. Cannot wait to buy a final copy for myself!
