According to some modern dictates, this story would not be well received by young readers; the language alone would render it inappropriate. After all, what four-year-old could possibly understand sparrows that "implored [Peter] to exert himself?" Fortunately, children rarely read literacy theory and so for generations have continued to enjoy this lively tale of naughtiness. This edition is delightful for its rich illustrations. Each page is saturated with color. The illustrator's use of watercolor, colored pen and pen and ink bring Beatrix Potter's English countryside to life. Alert readers will pick out the veins in the ivy leaves climbing Mr. McGregor's sundial and the individual hairs on the cat with the tail that "twitched as if it were alive." A bonus is the text's typeface. PreS - Gr 3 These full texts of three favorites ( Jeremy Fisher and The Tailor of Gloucester as well as the title Tale), with spacious format, attractive design and commonplace contemporary pictures would be acceptable except in comparison with the originals. In her tiny, still charming watercolors Beatrix Potter was meticulous in the acccuracy of natural details which combined to give a perfect sense of real places. Delacre dedicates this volume to Potter as ``an example and an inspiration,'' but the overall effect is bland, and there is a sloppy lack of attention to accuracy: a three-toed cat, a stuffed animal rabbit in which an arm seems to grow out of the side of its head, underwater bubbles traveling down and then up. Of course an artist may reillustrate a classic, but a formidable original demands a formidable reinterpretation. PreS-Gr 2-Over the years, Hague has re-illustrated many texts that were in the public domain. A number of his books have given new life to overlooked work and have been widely appreciated. His reinterpretation of the work of Potter, however, is egregiously unnecessary. Potter wanted her books to be small enough for little hands to hold. Hague's book is almost twice as large. Potter's book has softly colored spot illustrations, honing in beautifully on the drama or emotions of the facing pages of text. Hague's art is overblown with extraneous details that threaten to overwhelm the plot. His rabbits with enormous eyes are reminiscent of those kitschy, large-eyed waifs popularized by the Keans in the 1960s. If Potter's books were out of print, or in danger of becoming so, one might be more receptive to Hague's version, but they are readily available and hard, if not impossible, to improve upon.     I loved this when I was a little girl and my mother would read it to me while I sat on her lap. My daughter loves it now when I read it to her. This is truly one of the timeless classics.

    Children's Classic

    I remember reading this book as a little girl and now I read it to my little girl. While reading this book usually results in my daughter rambling on for hours at a time, days on end, about her concern for little Peter Rabit it's clear that she loves this story and she regularly asks for me to reread it. The pictures are beautiful and the story has a good, if somewhat stong, lesson in it. It is a true children's classic and always will be.

    Cute but...not all there

    This is so cute, but the very ending...like the last sentence is missing. Ok more like part of the last sentence. I still like it, but glad I only paid 99cents for it. Save your money tho, if it's messed up it's not worth a penny.

    Poor for nook color

    Wish Id seen the poorly formatted post. When I opened this on my nook color the last two or three words were cut off on the right side. Cant even read the book.

    A Classic for Generations

    I bought this for a baby shower. We were requested to bring a book instead of a card. This is a book my mother read to me. I read to my daughter. And hopefully, mothers will read to their children for generations to come. My daughter, now age 32, still has here complete "Tales of Beatrix Potter" collection, including the Frederic Ashton ballet on DVD. I have purchased Beatrix Potter books for other children over the years. I think the stories are timeless and the art is absolutely beautiful and understated.

    The original classic, but very poorly formatted for the Nook Color. Don't waste the dollar!

    MUCH TO MY SUPRISE!!!

    I happened to turn on cable tv and saw this title miss potter. I was curious and decided to watch the movie. Much to my suprise, i watching the story of an author who was a part of my childhood. I never paid attention to the author of the book 'peter rabbit'. I was so touched by the fact that this was a book i used to love to read growing up as a child. Of course it brought back many sweet memories and a time in life that many people have seperated from. I have decided to purchase all of her books for myself because i always enjoyed the pictures in the book. I would like to say that i am now 58 years old and i am so happy to see these books are still available. I feel that all the old books bring people back to there real selves again when there was peace around your mind. Thanks for being there. Bessie wilson, philadelphia, pa

    Love the read to me program

    Amazing!!!!!

    I have loved this book my entire life and i am looking forward to shareing this beloved tale of a mibehaveing rabbit who teaches yoyng boys and girls a valuable lesson on listening to your elders( parents) and good will come or in peters case he won't get killed by an angry farmer.

    Badly formatted

    This story is the sweet little classic we all know and love, BUT, the formatting is not at all as advertised. I expected that the artwork would be juxtaposed with the associated text, but there were quite a few pages of mainly whitespace with a few sentences - obviously the second page of the original two-page book version layout, with nothing special done with the formatting. I wouldn't have made the purchase had I known that.

    Kids enjoyed it.

    My kids enjoyed the tale and loved the illustrations. Happy I found this classic I grew up with on my Nookcolor.

    This book is so amazing

    I'm in the 4th grade, and I did a skit of this. This book is about a rabbit named Peter. Peter disobeys his mother while telling him not to go to Mr. Mcgregor's garden because his father was put in a pie. But, he still went and was trapped in their. He eats a lot of veggies, but gets sick, so he gets some parsley. Then he spots Mr. McGregor planting. He runs away but gets caught and sparrows come and tell him that he isn't trying hard enough to get out of the net and escapes but leaves his jacket behind. I think that this is a really great book. I hope young readers like me would read this.

    Highly recommended!

    My 18 month old granddaughter loves listening to this story on my Nook and I love it for it reminds me of how much I love the Beatrix Potter stories! Great pictures!

    Pictures included but text is centered.

    If you dont mind the text being poorly formatted then it is a nice tale. However, I feel that this book was not edited properly.
