Meet the Author

Catherine Coulter
Catherine Coulter

Catherine Coulter is the author of the New York Times-bestselling FBI thrillers The Cove, The Maze, The Target, The Edge, Riptide, Hemlock Bay, Eleventh House, Blindside, Blowout, Point Blank, Double Take and TailSpin. She lives in northern California.

Biography

The author of dozens of bestsellers, Catherine Coulter made her Romance debut with 1978's The Autumn Countess, a fast-moving story she describes as "a Gothic masquerading as a Regency." Six more Regency romances followed in quick succession; then, in 1982, she penned her first full-length historical novel, Devil's Embrace. She counts several trilogies among her most popular historicals, notably the Bride Trilogy -- which, in turn, spawned an ongoing story sequence featuring the beloved Sherbrooke family of Regency-era England.

In 1988, Coulter tried her hand at contemporary romance with a twisty little page-turner called False Pretenses. Her fans ate it up and begged for more. Since then, she has interspersed historicals with contemporary romantic thrillers (like the novels in her bestselling FBI series) in one of the most successful change-ups in the history of romance publishing.

Prologue

HE SAW THE man clearly: tall, with dark clothes, a

stark figure against the misty gray sky. He was walking into

the big granite building, ugly and flat-looking, with scores

of windows that didn’t look out over much except if you

were up high. Then, suddenly, he was behind the man, just

over his shoulder, keeping pace with him, watching him

take the elevator to the nineteenth floor. He was nearly

beside him as he walked down the long corridor and opened

the door to a large office. A smiling receptionist greeted

him, laughing at something he said. He watched the man

greet two other people, a young man and a young woman,

both well dressed, both obviously subordinate to him. He

went into a large office with the man, saw a United States

flag, a huge desk with its computer on top, the built-in

bookshelves behind him, the windows beside him. He

punched up the computer. Then, he was right behind

the man; he could have reached out and helped him put on

the long black robe. He watched him fasten the two clips

closed. The man opened a door and walked into a big room,

the look on his face somber, becoming cold, all the earlier

humor wiped clean. There was a buzz. It stopped abruptly

1

when he came into the room. Then the place went deathly

silent.

Suddenly the room began to spin, faces blurred into one

another, the very air of the room turned dark and darker

still, and then the great main doors burst open and three

men slammed into the room. They were carrying guns,

assault guns like Russian AK47s. They were shooting, people

were screaming, blood was spewing everywhere. He

saw the man’s face tighten with horror and fury. He saw the

man suddenly leap over the railing that had separated him

from the rest of that roomful of people, his black robe

swirling. His leg was up, he was turning, striking out, his

motion so fast it was hard to see it clearly. Someone

screamed loudly.

He was right behind the man now, heard him breathe,

could feel the controlled rage in him, the vicious tension

and determination, and wondered.

Suddenly, the man whirled about again, turning this time

to face him. He stared at himself, looked deeply into the

eyes of a man who had just killed and would kill again. He

felt the spit pool in his mouth, the coiled muscles, and felt

his arm fly out, striking a man’s throat.

He jerked up, flailing at the single sheet that was wound

tightly around him like a mummy’s shroud, a yell dying on

his lips. He was soaked with sweat, his hair plastered to his

head. His heart was pounding so fast and hard he thought

he’d explode. Again, he thought, that bloody dream yet

again. He didn’t think he could stand it.

An hour later, he let himself out of his house, carefully

locking the door behind him. He was on the way to his car

when a man jumped out of the bushes and blinded him with

a good half dozen photo flashes. It was too much.

He grabbed the photographer, hauled him up by his shirtfront,

and yelled right in his face, “You’ve gone over the

line, you little bastard.” He grabbed his camera, pulled the

film out, and threw him aside. He tossed the camera to

the man, who was lying on his back, gaping at him.

“You can’t do that!”

“I just did. Get off my property.”

The man scrambled to his feet, holding his camera to his

chest. “I’ll sue you! The public has a right to know!”

He wanted to beat the guy senseless. The urge was so

strong he was shaking with it. It was then he knew he had to

leave. Otherwise it might not stop before he went nuts and

really hurt one of the jerks. Or he simply just went nuts.

    Effortlessly combines mystery and relationships

I really enjoyed this book. I was immediately drawn into the story in the first chapter. The plot was wonderfully paced and kept my interest because this author has the ability to get you personally involved with the characters and effortlessly combines mystery and relationships. She brings these characters to life. When I went about my daily life while reading these books, I couldn't help but think about the characters and what was going to happen next. I will definitely be reading the entire FBI series by Catherine Coulter.

    No good

This is the first book I've read (or tried to read) by Catherine Coulter. I just could not get through it. The dialogue and the main characters were dull. Could not keep my interest.

    My aching head!!!

I loved the first two books of the series, but this one I just could not finish. I turned to the back of the book to see who and why .I hope the next book is better because I really loved the first characters.

    forget it

Started out great-then spiralled downward into a silly plot. You may not know the reason for what is going on but if your an avid mystery reader there are so few characters to read about that you will know who is behind everything that is going on, simply because the character pops up with no purpose.

    LOOOOOOONNNNGGGGGGG

Technically i wana give this book a 3 1/2 stars, just cuz i cant deny that it was a good book....it was just realllllly long. At first i was really into it, the guy finds the little girl bonds with her then her mother comes into the scene, blah, blah. It was after that it felt like it was gonna take an entire life time before they got to the end. I mean she tried to put in some nice twists and suspense but honestly they just bored me to death. I liked her other book The Cove better just cuz it was short and sweet. This book truly is good it just needs a lot of editing.

    Absolutely the Best Yet

I just started reading the series in November and the third book - The Target is the best yet. The author makes you feel like you are right there with the characters. At the beginning of the book, her description of the plot actually had me seeing in my mind what it was like. I just started the book yesterday and am already on Chapter 9 - can't read straight through because of work, etc. But when I get home I try to read as much as possible. Great Book!

    I couldn't put it down....

I've just started reading the FBI series. I love Savich & Sherlock. They have such a wonderful relationship. But With this book, I fell in love with Emma and Ramsey. She was written beautifully. Ramsey, Oh if only we could find real men like him. I just wish that all children who have been abducted and sexually abused could turn out just as good as Emma...

    Let down

I have really enjoyed Catherine Coulter's other books in the FBI series, so I was excited to start reading the Target. I was distrubed by the child rape/obsession line. Despite that I tried to finish this book and found myself stalled in the middle with no desire to waste any more time reading to the end. Very disappointed. I hope the next to come out is her usual high quality.

    What an excellent read

This book had many twists and turns, I was hooked from page one. Ramsey saves 6 year old Emma and in turn Emma saves him from their nightmares. Molly, Emma's mom, finds courage too, courage to stand up to her daughter's abuducter and abuser and to her father who has put her down for many years. I throughly enjoyed this book and all of it's twists an

    Target (FBI Series #3)

This book is the most spine-tickleing of them all. It starts off with a abuse girl who then turns to a man "Ramsey," who helps her recover from the abusement. They then found her mother "Molly," who then led them on a wild goose chase to search for the abuser and the attempted murderer. Noone knows who it could be. Could it be Ramsey, Molly, the bartender, the local sherif, or even the cook? I guess your going to have to read the book in order to find it out now won't you. It's one of the BEST books i've read.

What a waste of time this was!!

This book came recommended by a friend. And it was horrible. The dialouge was terrible!!! At one point the little girl doesnt speak at all and then she speaks like a adult. Poor poor writing. And the plot seemed to really drag.

    Right On 'The Target'!

This is the first book I've read by Coulter. I really enjoyed this book. Once I started, I could not put it down. The plot was fast-paced and extremely entertaining because of both the romance and suspense. I will definitely read other books by this author.
