Overview

Three love stories. Two worlds. Six characters trying bravely, if not always wisely, to make their romantic destinies come out right-if not in this lifetime, well, maybe in the next.

Set partly in Santa Barbara, CA and its nearby wine country, and partly in a mysterious yet strangely believable version of the Afterlife, this big-hearted and redemptive novel employs a light touch in treating serious themes of family damage, second chances, and forgiveness.

Darcy Barnett-a gifted chef on the brink of thirty, with issues when it comes to trusting men-meets Paul DeFiore, a 34-year old winemaker with family burdens of his own. They are so right for each other that it terrifies them both. Hugh Barnett-Darcy's father, a charming philanderer whose wandering ways created Darcy's mistrust in the first place-is determined to help them get together. Inconveniently, he's no longer among the living; no matter, he has two compelling reasons to find a way. He needs to be reconciled with his daughter before he can rest easy, and he's hoping, in the Afterlife, for a rapprochement with Sheila, the wife he cheated on and failed to appreciate, and who divorced him back on Earth. Along the way, he also meets Manny Klein, whose tragedy was meeting the love of his life too soon, and who for half a century has been hoping to see his soul-mate Emma again-somehow, somewhere, anywhere.

Powerfully romantic, often funny, THE ANGELS' SHARE interweaves the stories of these three sets of lovers. It taps into the universal yearning to believe that those who were most important in our lives are never altogether gone; that death is not oblivion, but a state in which people can finally tell the truth because the truth no longer hurts; and that love will conquer all--given enough time.

Meet the Author

Laurence Shames has been a New York City taxi driver, lounge singer, furniture mover, lifeguard, dishwasher, gym teacher, and shoe salesman. Having failed to distinguish himself in any of those professions, he turned to writing full-time in 1976 and has not done an honest day's work since.

His basic laziness notwithstanding, Shames has published more than twenty books and hundreds of magazine articles and essays. Best known for his critically acclaimed series of Key West novels, he has also authored non-fiction and enjoyed considerable though largely secret success as a collaborator and ghostwriter. Shames has penned four New York Times bestsellers. These have appeared on four different lists, under four different names, none of them his own. This might be a record.

From 1999 to 2013, Shames lived in Southern California and pretended to be in the movie business. THE ANGELS' SHARE is the first novel he has set on the West Coast.

He currently divides his year between Asheville, NC and Naples, FL. For more information, please visit http://www.laurenceshames.com

Finally another Larry Shames novel. He makes the afterlife as zany as Key West and throws in 3 great love stories -- one with a very handsome winemaker in Santa Barbara...

I took a chance on this book because I liked the cover (the angels in sunglasses are pretty funny) and the title (which turns out to have a few different shades of meaning). I read it in two sittings and was sorry to see it end. It's been a long time since I got so wrapped up in a story and its characters. On one level, the plot is a fairly simple boy-meets-girl, set in the way cool town of Santa Barbara, CA. But it's the stuff that goes on all around the plot that hooked me. Without giving too much away, there are parents who have passed away but are still managing to look out for their kids--how sweet and comforting is that?--and former lovers trying to reconnect on The Other Side. The amazing thing is that the Afterlife stuff seems completely real--these are just folks who happen to be dead! There's nothing ghoulish or woo-woo here, and no religion either. Just a gentle and often funny story that gives you a lot to think about. For that reason, I think this would make an excellent book-club book. Also, because there are three sets of would-be lovers--one 30-ish, one 50-ish, and one 80-ish, I think it would appeal to a wide range of readers--women and men both, as all the characters are well-drawn and presented with a lot of insight. Based on my enjoyment of The Angels' Share I would certainly check out other books by Laurence Shames.

Let's face it. I love everything Shames. Well, I'm not done with all his books, but I'm loving getting there! I discovered him through my daughter because she thought I'd like him. And she knows me. Knows me. I wasn't sure when I read the first lines but it's a fooler...it's NOT about overcoming illness. It's sort of about thirty-somethings' fear of commitment in relationships and letting unseen forces help us navigate...it is awe...well read it and finish my sentence! You always win by reading Shames.
